Kathy Kallick Band

Saturday, October 10, 2015 @ 8:00 pm

The Kathy Kallick Band is one of California’s finest bluegrass bands, and they soar both vocally and instrumentally. They are known both for honoring the music of some of the towering influences on early bluegrass (Bill Monroe, the Louvin Brothers, and many more), and for adding plenty of wonderful original songs and tunes to the cannon.

Kathy Kallick’s wonderful, distinctive vocals have been praised by many reviewers, such as Kevin Russell, who called her voice, “part country, part bluegrass, part something entirely her own. She simply has one of the most convincing and emotionally expressive voices in bluegrass music today.” She is also a tremendous songwriter and a fine guitarist, to boot. She is surrounded by some outstanding pickers and singers: Annie Staninec on fiddle and clawhammer banjo, Tom Bekeny, mandolin, fiddle, Greg Booth, dobro and banjo, and Cary Black on acoustic bass.

The Folk Music Society has been aware of the Kathy Kallick Band for quite some time, and there have been efforts to get them down here in our series (they are from the Bay area), but scheduling a show has always proved difficult. We are delighted to finally present them in our series and we have no doubt that you will like them as much as we do and as much as Wayne Bledsoe, of Bluegrass Saturday Night at KMST (Rolla, MO). Wayne wrote the following about their latest recording, Time:

Kathy Kallick’s latest release, Time, could have very well been titled “Timeless,” as that describes the inherent appeal of the fourteen tracks selected for the recording. Her rendition of classics by Bill Monroe, The Delmore Brothers, Arthur Smith, and Vern and Ray contains a musical respect for the past that will please the most demanding traditionalist, yet each tune is embossed with a pleasing aural presentation that is totally contemporary. Although Kathy’s homage to the past is highly commendable, it’s actually her four originals (“Time,” “Fare Thee Well,” “Bird,” and “Lulu and Jack”) that push Time into the “Timeless” zone. Each of the songs penned by Kathy contains the seeds from which classics of the future are grown. Time is pure “Kallick Magic” and recommended for all discriminating music lovers.
