Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band at Caltech in Two Days – Saturday, June 13

Just two days to plan to attend the Pasadena Folk Music Society’s Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band concert this Saturday, June 13 at 8:00 p.m. in Caltech’s Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman).

Susie is a native of Tennessee, where she was steeped in bluegrass and country music till she ventured to New York and spent two years on Broadway in Roger Miller’s Big River musical play. She came out to California over 15 years ago and has delighted audiences in numerous settings including concerts, coffeehouses, festivals, and workshops.  Along with her beautiful, pure voice, she is knowledgeable about the history of this music and she plays guitar, autoharp, and mountain dulcimer.

The Highlonesome Band came together in 2003 featuring some very fine musicians, including her husband, Steve Rankin, who sings, and plays mandolin, guitar, banjo, and bouzouki.  Rob Carlson sings, plays guitar and dobro, and also writes a good portion of their songs.  Fred Sanders has performed with various settings, playing some very solid upright bass.  He sings backing vocals and usually impresses the audience with a lead vocal as well.  The newest member is Mark Indicator on fiddle and vocals, and a very fine fiddler he is.

Listen to the Stephen Foster song, Hard Times Come Again No More at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZB54srulM0 for some great harmonies, and also  James Taylor’s song, Millworker, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFffMq7Zq44 for Susie’s fine vocal and Mark’s tremendous fiddle. And here’s Steve Rankin singing with Susie on Steve Earle’s Pilgrim:

We’ve gotten word that Susie will be singing a couple of Jean Ritchie songs to remember Jean’s great contribution to traditional style music, which promises to be a treat.  See the band’s website at http://www.susieglaze.com to find out more about them.

Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children.  Order them today at the Caltech Ticket Office, 9AM-4PM by calling (626) 395-4652 or going in person (no service charge) to the Winnett Student Center on campus.  They will be closed on Friday for Caltech’s graduation ceremonies, so if you don’t get your tickets today, you can buy them at the door on Saturday night.  You may be able to still buy tickets online athttp://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?orgid=43949&schedule=list today, but we aren’t sure when the cut-off (usually 2 days before the show) will be.  Visit our web site at http://folkmusic.caltech.edu and http://pasadenafolkmusicsociety.org to find out about shows coming up- more details to come.
