Celtic Fiddle Festival at Caltech in 2 days! FRIDAY February 13

Just 2 days until the Pasadena Folk Music Society presents a rare FRIDAY show with Celtic Fiddle Festival on Friday, February 13 at 8:00 PM in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman).  Kevin Burke (Ireland), Christian Lemaître (Brittany, France), and André Brunet (Québec), alternately showcase and combine their music traditions and their interaction with guitarist, Nicolas Quemener (Brittany) presents a delightful mix of music that ranges from joyous to mournful, with the balance tipped toward the former.  Their most recent recording, 2013’s The  Celtic Fiddle Festival: Live in Brittany (20th Anniversary Concert) captures them in fine form, with such tunes as The Trip to Durrow and the beautiful Valse du Chef de Gare (The Station Master’s Waltz), a tune about the musings of a man who oversees the boarding and well-being of his passengers, but will he ever take a train trip himself?  We repeat this clip of them playing at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall where they perform the medley, La Belle Catherine/Le Step á Ti-Phonse/Reel á Toto.  Don’t miss the opportunity to see this renowned group.

Tickets ($20 for adults, $5 for Caltech students and children) continue to sell very well, and it will be tight by showtime.  Advance tickets, by calling (626) 395-4652 or ordering them online at http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?pid=7928500 (though today, Wednesday, Feb. 11 is the last day for online), are the sure way to be included.  If you don’t go this route, you might want to check with the Ticket Office before 4:00 PM on Friday to see where things stand.  If you are planning to buy tickets at the door, we advise you to arrive by 7:30 PM. You can try calling (626) 616-4559 after 6:30 PM on Friday and we’ll tell you the ticket situation.

And don’t forget to consider tickets for our next show in two weeks featuring Socks in the Frying Pan.  We repeat this from last week’s message:  Socks in the Frying Pan is a young Irish group, consisting of two brothers, Shane and Fiachra Hayes on accordion and fiddle/banjo, also accompanied by Aodán Coyne on guitar and vocals on Saturday, February 28.  We’re very excited about being part of their first US tour.  You can hear them sing the song Bonny Light Horseman at Whelan’s in Dublin at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBuLckoRfVY.  Fine singing indeed!  Find out more about them at http://www.socksinthefryingpan.com.  You might want to buy tickets for both shows at the same time (same ticket price as Celtic Fiddle Festival), and save a few bucks on handling if you order on the phone.  You can buy tickets online for this show at http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?pid=7929728.
