Young Irish Band Socks in the Frying Pan in One Week

Socks in the Frying Pan, from County Clare, Ireland, makes their debut in our series in just eight days, on Saturday, February 28 at 8:00 p.m. in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) on the Caltech campus. For those who attended the sold-out Celtic Fiddle Festival show last week, this concert will be quite different. While there is a fiddler and a guitarist, there will also be accordion, banjo, and a good amount of singing, too.The band consists of Shane Hayes on accordion and vocals, Fiachra Hayes on fiddle, banjo, vocals, and Aodán Coyne on guitar and lead vocals.  They have been together in this configuration for a few years, and we stand corrected on an earlier statement, as they toured America last year, so this is actually their second U.S. tour.  They kick off the current tour in Hartford, Connecticut tonight!  Hear them sing

The band consists of Shane Hayes on accordion and vocals, Fiachra Hayes on fiddle, banjo, vocals, and Aodán Coyne on guitar and lead vocals. They have been together in this configuration for a few years, and we stand corrected on an earlier statement, as they toured America last year, so this is actually their second U.S. tour.  They kick off the current tour in Hartford, Connecticut tonight!  Hear them sing Bonny Light Horseman and hear what they can do instrumentally on their Silver Spear Reel Medley.  Catch the great interplay between the accordion and the fiddle from their opening American show last summer on Steve Tilston’s Slip Jigs and Reels:

The Socks received quite a bit of notoriety last year, being named “New Group of the Year” in the LiveIreland Irish Music Awards (The Livies), 2014, and “Best New Band, 2014” by the Tradition in Review Awards. They have released one recording, Socks in the Frying Pan, and they are working on a new one. We are yet to learn how they came by their name, but we really like their music. Come discover this fine young band!

Tickets for the show are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Order them at the Caltech Ticket Office, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at (626) 395-4652 or in person (no service charge) at Winnett Student Center on campus.  You can also buy them online.  Find out more about the Socks at http://www.socksinthefryingpan.com.

The music is coming fast and furious at Caltech, and just two weeks after this show, on Saturday, March 14, you can see and hear the great uilleann piper Paddy Keenan who, along with Kevin Burke, founded the Bothy Band and has certainly been considered one of the finest uilleann pipers around. This is a tremendous opportunity to hear a great player in an intimate environment. He will be accompanied by a guitarist. You can get a taste of his music on O’Roarke’s Reel. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for Caltech students and children.  You can buy tickets online or, if you choose to order on the phone, you can buy tickets for multiple shows with only one service charge.
