SUMMARY:On Sale: Bluegrass with Laurie Lewis and Nina Gerber!
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be at Knox Presbyterian Chuch. Purchase your tickets now through Eventbrite. Including fees\, Adults are $39.19 and Caltech students and youth through high school are $12.51. \nOur FAQ will answer your questions about parking\, seating\, refreshments\, and more. \n———————————————————————————————————————– \nLaurie Lewis is a multi-award winning American bluegrass singer\, musician\, and songwriter. She’ll be joined by Nina Gerber\, a favored accompanist to some of folk music’s most revered singer-songwriters. \n \n“To ask how Laurie Lewis’s music is relevant in this day and age\, in the broader folk\, Americana\, and bluegrass scenes as a whole\, would be similar to asking how a brick in a home’s foundation is relevant to its structure. Her influence\, her reach and her artistic intent are quiet stalwarts on which so much has been built.” Justin Hiltner\, Bluegrass Situation \n\nFor nearly four decades\, Laurie Lewis has gathered fans and honors for her powerful and emotive voice and her versatile\, dynamic songwriting. She is a sought-after recording producer and an equally skilled teacher and mentor. \n\nWhile steeped in the bluegrass tradition\, Laurie’s songwriting demonstrates her ability to surpass the limitations of that genre. Her works reflect her wide range of influences: from old time and country to Tin Pan Alley\, jazz standards and early rock ‘n roll. A recent project\, and Laurie Lewis\, is a series of duets with old friends (Kathy Kallick\, Tom Rozum\, Craig Smith\, Mike Marshall\, Nina Gerber\, Barbara Higbie\, and Todd Phillips)\, and the newest generation of acoustic standouts (Molly Tuttle\, Leah Wollenberg and Tatiana Hargreaves). \nIt would take pages to include all the accolades Nina Gerber has received from the many songwriters she has worked with. Born and raised in the semi-rural outskirts of Sebastopol\, CA\, Gerber has been an undeniable staple of the West Coast acoustic music scene since the late 70’s.  As David Rawlings is to Gillian Welch\, Gerber is to countless singer-songwriters: her musical choices are surprising\, intriguing\, deserving of one’s full attention\, and at the same time\, sit comfortably within the framework of any given song. \nIf available\, tickets will be sold at the door the night of the concert\, $40 for Adults and $10 for Caltech students and youth. Cash or Check only.

SUMMARY:CANCELED! Kathy Kallick Band - Saturday\, August 3
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Folk Music Society is proud to present one of the best California bluegrass bands on the West Coast\, the Kathy Kallick Band.  Long based in the Bay area\, this group matches the distinctive voice\, guitar\,  and songwriting skills of Kathy Kallick with 4 other amazing musicians\, Annie Staninec (fiddle)\, Greg Booth (dobro & banjo)\, Tom Bekeny (mandolin)\, and Cary Black  (acoustic bass)\, all of whom provide sterling harmonies.  Along with great original songs\, they perform folk\, country\, and bluegrass standards\, and instrumentals\, along with some other familiar songs.  They performed in our series in 2015. Kathy also did a show here with Laurie Lewis\, her longtime friend and fellow co-founder of the Good Ol’ Persons.  The Kathy Kallick Band’s music is upbeat\, energetic\, and traditional\, all at the same time\, and has a lot of heart.  They do some sad songs\, too.  A few examples of their style include Kathy’s song Foxhounds; the instrumental Lonesome Dobro Blues\, a  tune by Greg Booth\, showcasing their great instrumental prowess; and their version of the Osborne Brothers’ There’s a Higher Power. \n \nNote that this show only is at a different location  (a few blocks away) and starts a half hour earlier at 7:30 PM\,  doors open at 7:00 PM. \nThe concert is Saturday\, August 3 at Knox Presbyterian Church\, 225 S. Hill Ave.\, Pasadena\, several blocks from Caltech.  Knox Presbyterian Church has a parking lot and nearby street parking. Parking may also be available at a Pasadena City College (PCC) lot\, across the street\, for $2. Please read the posted signs before using the PCC lot as it may have temporary hours depending on whether the lot will be used the next morning for a local market. \nAdvanced tickets can be purchased here. Tickets are $25 and $10 for Caltech students and children 16 years and under.  A $4 service charge per ticket applies to online orders  and phone purchases (1-626-395-4652) through the Caltech Ticket Office. There is no service charge for tickets purchased in person at the ticket office in the Keith Spalding Building at 1200 California Blvd. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. It is wise to call before you come\, in case of a special schedule.
