SUMMARY:On Sale: Scottish Folksinger Iona Fyfe
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be at Knox Presbyterian Chuch. Tickets are on sale on Eventbrite. Including fees\, Adults are $33.85 and $12.51 for Caltech students and youth through high school. \nAberdeenshire folksinger\, Iona Fyfe\, has become one of Scotland’s finest singers\, rooted deeply in the singing traditions of the North East of Scotland. In 2021\, she became the first singer to win the coveted title of Musician of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards. A two-time winner of Scots Singer of the Year\, Iona has performed across Europe\, the US\, Canada and Australia. \nGrowing up within the Traditional Music and Song Association movement\, Iona met many revivalist singers such as Jimmie Hutchison\, Joe Aitken and Carole Prior who influenced her ballad and bothy ballad style. Attending singarounds\, ceilidhs and competitions from 5 years of age\, Iona learnt her repertoire mainly through oral transmission and is still a regular within the competitive ballad circuit. \n \nIona is a fierce advocate for the official recognition of the Scots Language\, leading a successful campaign to pressure Spotify into recognising Scots and add it to its list of languages. Honoured at the Scots Language Awards with the title of Speaker of the Year in 2021\, Iona performs both folk and pop songs in the Scots language\, remaining true to her rooting in tradition. Iona has featured in several publications including The Sunday Post\, The Financial Times\, The Wall Street Journal and The Times. She won the title of Scots Singer of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards in 2018 and was described as “one of the best Scotland has to offer.” \nEnjoy Iona’s music at: \n\nYouTube: ionafyfe\nSpotify: https://spoti.fi/36PlU2e\nBandcamp: www.ionafyfe.bandcamp.com\n\nIf available\, tickets will be available at the door the night of the concert\, $35 for Adults and $10 for Caltech students and youth. Cash or Check only. \nFirst Notice of Our Events. Follow us on Eventbrite to be notified as soon as tickets go on sale for all future concerts. \nQuick Summary of Events. Follow us on Linktr.ee

SUMMARY:Inspired by Maritime Traditions\, Kalos on May 9th
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be at Knox Presbyterian Chuch. Tickets are on sale on Eventbrite. Prices are $33.85 (incl. fee) in advance tickets\, $35 at the door.  Caltech students and youth through high school are $12.51 (incl. fee) in advance or $10 at the door.  \nKalos is drawn to water. Every performance is like stepping into a river—they never play a song the same way twice. They make music inspired by the maritime traditions of Scotland\, Ireland\, Scandinavia and North America. Their album titles—Harbour and Headland—honor the meeting point between the land and sea and they sing songs about shorelines\, seafarers and drownings. They revel in the driving danceability of Irish tunes\, but also take inspiration from the pastoral melodies and naturalistic metaphors of Scottish music. But while the music they write is forged in tradition\, it is nonetheless cast and tempered in new and unexpected ways. \nKalos is an ancient Greek word that means “beautiful” or “praiseworthy” and the root of the English words “calligraphy” and “calisthenics.” Like a fine calligrapher or adept gymnast\, each musician possesses a profound attention to detail and form. But within the exquisite architecture of their compositions\, they remain inventive—finding new flourishes and discovering unseen ley lines in the fertile ground of traditional music. \n “There’s a spontaneity at work as the three musicians alternately contest and duel\, combine and coalesce to bring their talents together.”…Folk Worlds magazine \nThe trio includes musicians you will surely know from their work with Ensemble Galilei and The Syncopaths. \nRyan McKasson (fiddle\, viola\, background vocals) has gained a strong reputation as a performer\, composer\,collaborator and teacher. In 1996 he became the youngest ever winner of the US National Scottish Fiddle Championship. In 1997 he was awarded a Merit Scholarship for Viola Performance from the University of Southern California. Over the years Ryan has recorded with a number of influential artists including Scottish fiddle champion Hanneke Cassel’s albums Silver (2006)\, For Reasons Unseen (2009)\, and Dot the Dragon’s Eyes (2013)\, as well as Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas’s recording Highlander’s Farewell (2011). \nEric MacDonald (guitar\, mandolin\, lead vocals) is now established as one of the USA’s premier accompanists in many styles. He is an active session player\, regularly recording and traveling with musicians of many stripes. In addition to guitar accompaniment\, Eric’s debut solo album Rove features his unique style and approach to tunes on the mandolin\, as well as carefully crafted deliveries of traditional ballads on voice and guitar. \nJeremiah McLane (accordion\, piano\, background vocals) has spent several decades traveling in Europe\, doing field research that laid the groundwork for a Master’s degree from the New England Conservatory. Jeremiah has recorded over a dozen CDs with Nightingale\, the Clayfoot Strutters\, Bob & the Trubadors\, Le Bon Vent\, and Ruthie Dornfeld. \n \n \nArtist Social Media\n\nWebsite: https://kalosband.com/\nBandcamp: https://kalosband.bandcamp.com/\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/DPjZb5gkb5y/\nSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0CioUOzMbjFqtlaTcj1Dcn\nApple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/kalos/1684012230\n\nFirst Notice of Our Events. SUMMARY:Irish Traditional Musicians Nuala Kennedy and Eamon O'Leary on April 25
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be at Knox Presbyterian Chuch\, details and tickets can be found here!  \nNuala’s concert tour is sponsored by Culture Ireland. \nWorld renowned as a traditional singer and flute player\, Nuala Kennedy is known for her creative reworking and reimagining of traditional songs and for her unique Irish flute style\, formed in Dundalk and honed in her long-time adopted home of Edinburgh\, Scotland. \nShe is a musical adventurer who is recognized world-wide as a superlative performer of traditional music. Nuala joined Irish-American Supergroup SOLAS as singer for their 30th Anniversary Reunion in 2025. She has graced the cover of Irish Music Magazine\, Sing Out! and appeared on the mainstage at festivals and venues around the world including Rudolstadt (GER)\, Celtic Connections (UK)\, Milwaukee Irish festival (USA)\, Telemark (NOR)\, Eurofonik (FRA)\, National Folk Festival (AU) and Celtic Colors (CAN). \n“Cheeky\, dynamic and full of ideas.” —Scotland on Sunday \n“A flute player and composer of remarkable finesse\, fearless of the unknown.” —The Irish Times \nHer newest release ‘Hydra’ (August 2024) is an atmospheric duo album of songs recorded with Eamon O’ Leary. \n‘Sumptous folk songs’  – Folk Album of the Month\, The Guardian \n \nNuala and Eamon share a life-long interest in collecting lesser-known ancient ballads and breathing new life into them\, re-working and re-imagining them for audiences today. Their melodies are hypnotic and wandering… much as the musicians themselves. They have honed their craft in tandem over decades of touring every conceivable type of venue; from Carnegie Hall and huge folk festivals\, to a hand hewn village hall north of the Arctic Circle. \nEamon O’Leary\, from Dublin\, is a long time resident of New York City. A singer and string player\, with deep roots in the world of Irish trad\, he is one half of The Murphy Beds with Jefferson Hamer. Their debut album was described by The Hufffington Post as one that “bears repeated listening from start to finish\, with ten beautiful\, crystalline songs.” He is also a member of The Alt with Nuala Kennedy and John Doyle. His songwriting can be heard\, most recently\, on The Silver Sun from Reveal Records.

SUMMARY:Tannahill Weavers
DESCRIPTION:The Tannahill Weavers will give an exciting concert. We know because they have delighted the audiences at three prior shows for us at Caltech\, most recently in 2018. This band of Scots has won enthusiastic fans for more than 50 years by blending the beauty of traditional Celtic melodies with the power of modern rhythms and strong vocals.  Check out a sampling of performance videos: a ballad\, a jig and one of their own fine songs\, The Big Ships. \nTwo of the band’s original members – Roy Gullane on guitar and Phil Smillie on flute\, whistles and bodhran – now perform with Malcolm Bushby on fiddle and bouzouki and Iain MacGillivray on pipes\, whistles and fiddle.  Their concerts demonstrate the rich musical heritage of the Celtic people.  Their diverse repertoire spans centuries with fiery instrumentals\, topical songs\, ballads and lullabies. \nTickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children.  They are available in advance from the Caltech Ticket Office at (626) 395-4652\, or you can purchase tickets online. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on the evening of the concert. \nPLEASE NOTE — Caltech is no longer requiring masks and proof of vaccination for attending concerts on campus.

SUMMARY:Old Blind Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Old Blind Dogs launched their fourteenth studio album ‘Knucklehead Circus’ in Winter 2021 and will celebrate thirty years on the road in 2022. \n“The Old Blind Dogs play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm\, …as players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion\,” says a reviewer for The Scotsman\, a Scottish national newspaper. The band is known for soaring fiddle playing\, stirring pipes\, and fine singing\, punctuated by extraordinary percussion. A reviewer for the Bright Young Folk website says the current members “create such a tight sound with rhythms\, harmonies\, melodies and lyrics that sweep you along in whichever direction they choose.” \nOld Blind Dogs formed in 1992 in Aberdeen\, Scotland\, and first played for us in 2002. The band’s personnel has changed some over the years\, though it’s still the same as their 2019 Caltech show: original-member Jonny Hardie on fiddle and vocals\, Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals). \nInducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame in 2020 their traditional Scottish music also contains influences from jazz\, blues\, Middle Eastern music\, reggae and rock. Long a favorite of our Folk Music Society\, tickets sold out for many of their prior six concerts. \nCheck out these recorded performances  from Knucklehead Circus: Thin Man\, an instrumental track\, and John Barleycorn\, a trad favorite with spirited vocals. \nTickets: $25 for adults and $10 for youth (18 years and under). Available from the Caltech Ticket Office in advance by selecting the link below\, by phone at 626-395-4652 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.\, Tuesday-Friday\, Closed weekends and Monday\,  (temporary hours\, no in-person sales). \nCaltech COVID-19 policy \nCaltech requires that all guests wear a high-quality mask (surgical\, N95\, KN95\, KF94) indoors at all times. In addition\, proof of full vaccination and booster\, along with a government-issued ID will be required to enter Beckman and Ramo Auditoriums. For all public events\, children under 5\, who are not yet eligible for vaccination\, are not permitted inside the auditoriums.
