SUMMARY:Tannahill Weavers
DESCRIPTION:The Tannahill Weavers will give an exciting concert. We know because they have delighted the audiences at three prior shows for us at Caltech\, most recently in 2018. This band of Scots has won enthusiastic fans for more than 50 years by blending the beauty of traditional Celtic melodies with the power of modern rhythms and strong vocals.  Check out a sampling of performance videos: a ballad\, a jig and one of their own fine songs\, The Big Ships. \nTwo of the band’s original members – Roy Gullane on guitar and Phil Smillie on flute\, whistles and bodhran – now perform with Malcolm Bushby on fiddle and bouzouki and Iain MacGillivray on pipes\, whistles and fiddle.  Their concerts demonstrate the rich musical heritage of the Celtic people.  Their diverse repertoire spans centuries with fiery instrumentals\, topical songs\, ballads and lullabies. \nTickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children.  They are available in advance from the Caltech Ticket Office at (626) 395-4652\, or you can purchase tickets online. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on the evening of the concert. \nPLEASE NOTE — Caltech is no longer requiring masks and proof of vaccination for attending concerts on campus.

SUMMARY:Second Series of John McCutcheon online shows
DESCRIPTION:A new four-show series of livestreamed concerts by 50th-year folkster John McCutcheon will begin with a show this Sunday\, Sept. 4\, at 4 p.m. Pacific Time.  This is a final reminder of your option to get a series discount on purchase of tickets\, in the “Ticket type” dropdown menu at this link. \nThe Sept. 4 show will highlight songs from McCutcheon’s new album\, Leap!.  It’s the 43rd album in his illustrious five-decade career. As Pete Seeger said\, “John McCutcheon is not only one of the best musicians in the USA\, but also a great singer\, songwriter\, and song leader. And not just incidentally\, he is committed to helping hard-working people everywhere to organize and push this world in a better direction.” \nThe second concert in the series\, on Oct. 16\, will be an all-request show\, enriched by McCutcheon’s telling of the stories behind the songs. The third\, on Nov. 13\, will debut several songs he has co-written with Tom (Last Thing on My Mind) Paxton in the past two years and showcase one that’s already been released to worldwide acclaim: Ukrainian Now. The series finale\, on Dec. 11\, will be “Winter Solstice: A Holiday Concert with John McCutcheon.” \nAll four of these online concerts are on Sundays\, starting at 4 p.m. Pacific Time. Ticket-holders get links for watching the show live and also for replaying the show any time in the 48 hours afterwards. The replay option is handy if 4 p.m. is inconvenient for you or you want to enjoy a show a second time\, or with pauses to catch the wonderful lyrics better. \nFor tickets\, use the dropdown menu at this link to make your choice. The regular single-concert ticket price is $20\, plus $4.60 in fees. The bundled four-show ticket is $65\, plus $14.95 in fees. Lower single-ticket prices are available for students and unemployed people. Other options include “family/household” and “music supporter” tickets. \nA portion of the ticket sales through this link will go to the Pasadena Folk Music Society\, and help cover costs of future in-person concerts.  We are partnering with McCutcheon for this series as we did for some well-received online shows last spring.  From those livestreams\, we know we can expect smooth audio-visual logistics and an enjoyable show\, almost as if sitting in McCutcheon’s living room with him. \nAs an appetizer for this Sunday’s show\, check out The Ride\, one of the 18 songs on McCutcheon’s new album.  It starts the album on a theme about taking risks\, matching the exclaimed “Leap!” imperative of the album title. All 18 songs were written during the COVID pandemic. McCutcheon says\, “These are not songs about the pandemic. They are songs because of the pandemic.” \nSome additional information about the four-show series is in our previous mailing at this link. If you have any questions about these shows\, just ask by replying to this message.

SUMMARY:Old Blind Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Old Blind Dogs launched their fourteenth studio album ‘Knucklehead Circus’ in Winter 2021 and will celebrate thirty years on the road in 2022. \n“The Old Blind Dogs play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm\, …as players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion\,” says a reviewer for The Scotsman\, a Scottish national newspaper. The band is known for soaring fiddle playing\, stirring pipes\, and fine singing\, punctuated by extraordinary percussion. A reviewer for the Bright Young Folk website says the current members “create such a tight sound with rhythms\, harmonies\, melodies and lyrics that sweep you along in whichever direction they choose.” \nOld Blind Dogs formed in 1992 in Aberdeen\, Scotland\, and first played for us in 2002. The band’s personnel has changed some over the years\, though it’s still the same as their 2019 Caltech show: original-member Jonny Hardie on fiddle and vocals\, Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals). \nInducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame in 2020 their traditional Scottish music also contains influences from jazz\, blues\, Middle Eastern music\, reggae and rock. Long a favorite of our Folk Music Society\, tickets sold out for many of their prior six concerts. \nCheck out these recorded performances  from Knucklehead Circus: Thin Man\, an instrumental track\, and John Barleycorn\, a trad favorite with spirited vocals. \nTickets: $25 for adults and $10 for youth (18 years and under). Available from the Caltech Ticket Office in advance by selecting the link below\, by phone at 626-395-4652 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.\, Tuesday-Friday\, Closed weekends and Monday\,  (temporary hours\, no in-person sales). \nCaltech COVID-19 policy \nCaltech requires that all guests wear a high-quality mask (surgical\, N95\, KN95\, KF94) indoors at all times. In addition\, proof of full vaccination and booster\, along with a government-issued ID will be required to enter Beckman and Ramo Auditoriums. For all public events\, children under 5\, who are not yet eligible for vaccination\, are not permitted inside the auditoriums.

SUMMARY:John McCutcheon Online
DESCRIPTION:Our online John McCutcheon concert\, “The Story Behind the Song\,” will occur on May 7.  You can get tickets at this link up to the last minute\, but one special feature is that McCutcheon (photo above) is taking requests\, and he asks to get them early. \nUnlike our other online concerts so far this year\, the May 7 one is on a Saturday\, at 5 p.m.  Like the others\, a ticket will entitle you to enjoy it any time for two days afterward\, in case the show time is inconvenient or you want to hear it again. McCutcheon is an accomplished storyteller as well as a musician and songwriter.  The International Storytelling Center says he has “a storytelling style compared to Will Rogers and Garrison Keillor.”  In this solo show\, he’ll tell about songs that ticket-holders request to hear. \n“For years\, because I write so many songs that are stories\, people have been wanting to know: ‘Well\, how did you come up with that?  What made you want to write something about that?  Is that true?’” McCutcheon said during his April 10 online show with other musicians.  When you receive your ticket confirmation from Mandolin (the outfit handling logistics of the show)\, that email will include a link for requesting a song.  “Get them in early\,” McCutcheon suggested\, “because that will give me some time to prepare\, especially if you want to hear a song I haven’t done in a good long time.” \nTickets for “The Story Behind the Song” are $20 plus a $4 handling fee.  You can find other pricing options in the drop-down menu next to “Livestream Ticket.”  The options include discounts for students or unemployed people and premiums for a family/household ticket or music supporter ticket.  A portion of the ticket revenue through Mandolin comes to our Folk Music Society.  That helps with expenses related to resuming live\, in-person concerts as concerns about the pandemic are resolved. \nMcCutcheon has written hundreds of songs. Many of them refer to historical events.  One of his best-known\, Christmas in the Trenches\, tells of a World War One holiday.  His heart-wrenching Streets of Sarajevo draws from cellist Vedran Smailovic‘s response to a 1992 bombing (which also led to a children’s book\, Flowers for Sarajevo\, by McCutcheon and illustrator Kristy Caldwell).  McCutcheon’s more-recent Zilphia’s Piano sings about the origin of the anthem We Shall Overcome.  His Forgotten taps into  inspiration from Malala Yousafzai.  His Vote\, Dammit!\, from the late John Lewis. \nFor examples of how McCutcheon’s storytelling introductions augment his songs\, check this performance of Doing My Job\, about baseball’s Cal Ripken\, or his introduction to Streets of Sarajevo beginning at minute 53 of this concert recorded in 2017.  He says Smailovic’s 22-day tribute exemplifies a quote from Leonard Bernstein: “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely\, more beautifully\, more devotedly than ever before.”  It’s fair to say that McCutcheon‘s own career does\, too.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Eileen Ivers and unIVERSal roots
DESCRIPTION:Caltech has canceled this event.\nThis decision was made out of concern for the health of our community as a social distancing measure in light of COVID-19. \nBox office staff will contact current ticket holders to issue refunds and answer any additional questions. If you obtained your ticket on Goldstar\, you will be contacted by Goldstar staff. \nFor updates from the Institute on its COVID-19 response\, please visit Caltech’s Coronavirus information page. \n\nCaltech Public Programming will present Eileen Ivers and unIVERSal roots\, and you save $5 on tickets by mentioning the Folk Music Society for this show by one of the finest Irish fiddlers in the world today. Her band will include Buddy Connolly (accordion\, whistles\, and keyboards)\, Matt Mancuso (guitar\, trumpet\, fiddle\, and vocals)\, Lindsey Horner (upright bass\, electric bass\, and baritone sax)\, and Dave Barckow (percussion\, guitar\, and vocals)\, and a great time will be had by all. The parking lots between Michigan and Wilson have been closed- a new building is rapidly rising at the southeast corner of Wilson and Del Mar.  The most reliable parking will be on Wilson Avenue\, either on the street or in the two parking structures just south of Del Mar Avenue\, across the street from Beckman Institute.   One structure is just north of the Institute at 341 S. Wilson Avenue\, and the other\, 405 S. Wilson\, is just a bit south of the Institute.   Rest assured that after 5PM on weekdays\, and all day on weekends\, you can park for free in these structures\, despite signs that allude to the more restricted parking rules during the day on weekdays.   You are permitted to park in slots that have names on them here as well.  From the structures\, walk around the big lawn (much of which is currently fenced in for the building projet to the north) in front of Beckman Institute and you will recognize where to go.  On this map\, we are suggesting that you park in structures #123 and #124 in the upper left. Beckman Institute is building #74\, just to the east (right).

SUMMARY:Master Harper\, Patrick Ball\, presents "Come Dance with me in Ireland: a Pilgrimage to Yeats Country"
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Folk Music Society will present renowned harpist and storyteller\, Patrick Ball on Saturday\, March 7 at 8:00 PM in Beckman Institute Auditorium. Patrick has performed with us numerous times before\, and\, as usual\, this one will combine his magnificent harp music with dramatic storytelling. This is a relatively new show that he has not performed in Pasadena\, and we are very pleased and proud to have him back. His steel-stringed harp is a splendid recreation of the great harps that were played in Ireland a thousand years ago. The Washington Post wrote\, “Patrick Ball…casts a haunting spell… a graceful and often bittersweet evocation of the past.” and The St Petersburg Times described a similar show as being “richly theatrical…the spell he casts is hauntingly beautiful…Ball embodies his subject with uncanny realism…a gem of a show.” The sound of his harp is rich and evocative\, and his masterful storytelling skills drive the story. \nThe show\, Come Dance with Me In Ireland: A Pilgrimage to Yeats Country is based on the life and works of William Butler Yeats. The piece is the story of an elderly Irish couple who had spent their entire adult lives in the states but have returned to Ireland to go on a “Yeats Country” tour to try to recapture some swiftly fading memories of their youth. They visit many of the places beloved by William Butler Yeats: Innisfree\, Coole Park\, Thoor Ballylee\, Knocknarea\, Glencar and Drumcliffe. They hear again some of his most beautiful poems\, The Lake Isle Of Innisfree\, When You Are Old\, The Song Of Wandering Aengus\, and others. And their story unfolds… Patrick performs the accompanying music on the legendary wire-strung Celtic harp. Made of maple\, with 32 brass strings\, it is tuned diatonically in the key of D and played with the fingernails. \nPatrick has spent considerable time in Ireland in the last few years\, having been awarded Visiting Fellowships by the Moore Insitute at the National University of Ireland\, Galway\, in order to study the life and works of Yeats. He spent a good deal of time in the Archives and Special Collections\, but perhaps even more time in the pubs and rambling around Yeats Country\, giving this piece the savor of all of these influences. Join us for the adventure! \n \nTickets are $25 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. They are available at the Caltech Ticket Office by calling (626) 395-4652 and at the Caltech Ticket Office at 1200 E. California Boulevard in Pasadena (Southeast corner of Wilson Avenue). Their usual hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. Tickets are sold for face value if you come to the Ticket Office. There are fees for phone orders by credit/debit card and for online tickets as well. You can also buy tickets at the door on the night of the show with no additional fees. We begin admitting people into the auditorium at about 7:15 PM. \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium at 400 South Wilson Avenue. On concert night\, free parking is available in the lot behind Beckman Auditorium (the large round\, white building at the end of Michigan Avenue)\, but this lot may fill up\, especially if there are other events on campus that night. You can always find parking for our shows in the two parking structures on Wilson Avenue\, just south of Del Mar Boulevard. On weekends and after 6:00 PM\, you may park in spaces that have individual names. Restrictive wording at the structures refers to weekdays before 6:00 PM. There is also parking available on Wilson Avenue itself. Beckman Institute is on the other side of the large lawn (currently a staging area for nearby construction) on Wilson Avenue\, on the first floor of the left portion of the building. If you get to the fountain and pools that point toward the white\, round\, Beckman Auditorium\, you have gone too far. See this map. Beckman Institute is building #74 and the parking structures are #123 and #124.

SUMMARY:Scotland's Jim and Susie Malcolm in Pasadena
DESCRIPTION:Jim and Susie Malcolm will perform in Beckman Institute Auditorium on FRIDAY\, January 24 at 8:00 PM. Jim\, who lives with his wife\, Susie\, in Perthshire\, Scotland\, has performed for us 6 times solo and once when he was a member of Old Blind Dogs\, so many are familiar with him and will be eager to start out the year with another thoroughly enjoyable evening with him. We have been lucky enough to have him on a somewhat regular schedule\, every 2 or 3 years. He is known for his fine voice\, excellent guitar & harmonica skills\, a large dose of humor\, well-told stories\, and\, not least of all\, his great adaptations of traditional songs\, as well excellent original songs. Yes\, he excels at all of these things. He often brings us a surprise or two\, which we can’t know about ahead of time\, but we do know that for the first time\, he is bringing his wife\, Susie along to accompany him on vocals! We’ve been looking forward to this treat\, as they have waited until their kids are old enough to allow Susie to cross the Atlantic with him. We’ve heard her doing occasional backing vocals on Jim’s recordings\, particularly 2017’s Spring Will Follow On\, which she is officially a “Jim and Susie Malcolm” album. She has performed with Jim and done some solo shows closer to home\, so she is no beginning performer. Another special feature of this show will be that the show is the day before the 261st birthday of Scotland’s National Bard\, Robert Burns\, and you can bet that this fact will not be ignored. In performance\, Jim usually splits his time between singing original songs\, many of which end up getting recorded by others\, and he sings songs written or passed down by some of Scotland’s fine writers\, including early ballads from Burns\, Robert Tannahill\, William Soutar\, and his great hero Jim Reid. With the addition of Susie on vocals\, this will be a wonderful show\, so please join us! \n \n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. They are available at the Caltech Ticket Office by calling (626) 395-4652 and at the Caltech Ticket Office at 1200 E. California Boulevard in Pasadena (Southeast corner of Wilson Avenue). SUMMARY:Winterdance Celtic Christmas Celebration with Molly's Revenge FRIDAY\, December 20 in Ramo Auditorium
DESCRIPTION:Molly’s Revenge has played for us a number of times and this “California Celtic” band has picked up a good many local fans in Southern California and throughout the West Coast. Their energy and musical excellence is quite memorable\, and they haven’t played in Pasadena since 2011\, so it is way past time that we brought them back. This is a very special Winterdance Celtic Christmas Celebration with guest vocalist\, Amelia Hogan and dancers to bolster this fine trio for what promises to be an exciting and wonderful show. The performance will include Christmas songs both old and new\, all played with a Celtic twist. They have been doing variations of this show for the past 13 years\, but have never made it down to our series to perform it. We have been trying to make this show happen for some time and now we are set. With the dancers\, we’ve had to move the show to Ramo Auditorium to have enough space. \nMolly’s Revenge is comprised of a trio of Californians who have dedicated their lives to Celtic music. David Brewer has been playing whistle\, bodhran\, and four types of bagpipes for over 20 years. He studied in Scotland at the Ceolas Music School in South Uist under the tutelage of some of the best pipers in the world. His authentic and unique style of playing has earned him the reputation of being one of the most accomplished pipers on the West Coast. John Weed is a classically-trained violinist who switched to playing Irish fiddle about 20 years ago. John lived in Ireland in 2000 and taught fiddle workshops at the Flowing Tide International Music School in Doonbeg\, County Clare. He attended the Frankie Kennedy Winter School in Dunlewey\, County Donegal where he has studied with Ciaran O’Maonaigh and Dermot Mcloughlin. In recent years his fiddling has grown to include American\, Quebecois\, and Swedish fiddle styles. Guitarist Stuart Mason has been collecting and performing traditional music for over 40 years. He has appeared on stage from Ireland to China performing Celtic\, old-time\, bluegrass\, and his own compositions\, which have won awards from the West Coast Songwriters Association. He also leads workshops and classes in traditional music techniques at music festivals and camps. As always for this special Christmas show\, they will have a wonderful female singer joining them. We will let you know as soon as her name is announced. John Doyle\, founding member of the great Irish/American band\, Solas said\, “They bring to the music a vital and joyous creativity that excites even the hardest of hearts.” Don’t miss this very special show! There are fees for phone orders by credit/debit card and for online tickets as well\, which you can buy here until midnight\, Dec. 18. Fees are higher online\, especially multiple tickets\, because there is a charge on each individual ticket. You can also buy tickets at the door on the night of the show with no fees at all. We begin admitting people into the auditorium at about 7:15 PM. \n \nThe show will be in Ramo Auditorium\, which is located at the southern end of Baxter\, the eastern building of the two identical buildings on either side of the “Beckman Mall”\, the grassy area south of the round\, white Beckman Auditorium. If you know where Beckman Institute is\, we’ll have signs leading you to Ramo\, and if you don’t\, check out this map\, find building 77 and Ramo is at the bottom end. The round map on this page might help you visualize the building better. In this larger hall\, a sold out show is unlikely. \nBeckman Institute Auditorium at 400 South Wilson Avenue. Beckman Institute is building #74 and the parking structures are #123 and #124. \nParking is essentially the same for Ramo as other shows\, you’ll just walk to a different building. There will be the usual limited parking right behind the large Beckman Auditorium- It is OK to park in slots with names on weekends and evenings\, but the lot may fill up\, depending on what other events may be taking place on the Caltech campus.  This is the best place to park for the handicapped (try to come a little early- email us at info@pasadenafolkmusicsociety.org if you need help planning your visit). From the structures\, walk around the big lawn (much of which is currently fenced in for the building projet to the north)\, past Beckman Institute\, on either side of the fountain pools\, heading toward the white\, round Beckman Auditorium\, then turn right and go the the far end of the building on the left side of the big lawn.  On this map\, we are suggesting that you can park in structures #123 and #124 in the upper left. Ramo Auditorium is at the far end of building #77.  If you need help figuring this out\, try calling (626) 616-4559 \nMolly’s Revenge (the name) here

SUMMARY:Dick Hensold and Patsy O'Brien in Beckman Institute Auditorium Saturday\, November 9
DESCRIPTION:Dick Hensold is the leading Northumbrian smallpiper in North America. He returns to Caltech following his debut here a few years ago with Andrea Beaton in a show that was very well received. This time\, he is performing with Patsy O’Brien\, premier guitarist\, singer\, and songwriter. They will perform an evening of traditional Celtic music\, but with unique and innovative arrangements\, including a variety of songs from Britain and Ireland\, accompanied by guitar and Northumbrian smallpipes (a quiet bagpipe from Northeast England)\, and various whistles. The show will also feature traditional and historical tunes from Cape Breton Island\, Scotland\, Ireland and Northumberland\, with a good measure of original music in the traditional style. As well as a broad range of styles of Celtic music\, this program includes an impressive range of expression\, from the jaunty and humorous to soulful\, led by Patsy’s warm and multi-colored baritone voice\, Dick’s variety of pipes and whistles\, and the nimble instrumental virtuosity of both musicians. For the past 20 years\, Dick has performed and taught in England\, Scotland\, Japan\, Canada\, and across the United States. Based in St. Paul\, Minnesota\, he is a full-time musician\, passionately presenting the traditional music of Scotland\, Cape Breton Island\, and Northumberland\, as well as Nordic folk music\, early music\, and traditional Cambodian music. He is also an active composer\, studio musician and theater musician\, and his solo CD\, Big Music for Northumbrian Smallpipes was released in 2007. He performs and records in various combinations with artists from around the world. \nPatsy O’Brien hails from Cork\, Ireland. As well as supplying the driving guitar rhythms of Celtic/World Music diva Eileen Ivers’ last European tour\, and collaborating with many giants of the Celtic/World music scene (Paddy Keenan\, Cathie Ryan among them)\, he hosts guitar workshops all over the country\, and NPR saw fit to feature one of his song arrangements on the prestigious All Songs Considered. With 4 critically-acclaimed solo albums under his belt\, along with numerous live and studio collaborations\, Patsy’s songwriting reflects his penchant for seamless genre-hopping\, and a strong interest in roots Americana as well as jazz. Dick and Patsy together are a very strong pairing and this promises to be a great show! \n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. SUMMARY:New Date! Robin and Linda Williams return to Pasadena Saturday\, October 26
DESCRIPTION:Robin and Linda Williams are coming this fall! Linda’s ankle is on the mend and they have rescheduled their tour\, so we will be presenting them on Saturday\, October 26! They haven’t been out here to the West Coast in quite some time\, but they will be leaving their home in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia.  We return to what will be the re-vamped Beckman Institute Auditorium\, our smaller hall\, usual location\, at 8:00 PM.   Robin and Linda are best known for being semi-regulars on Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion for many years.  Those who know Robin and Linda from their tours\, performances\, and recordings have heard the scores of outstanding original songs\, covers of some of their great songwriting contemporaries\, and a few traditional songs\, as well.   \nTheir songs have been performed and recorded by Chris Thile\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Tom T. Hall\, George Hamilton IV\, Tim & Mollie O’Brien\, Kathy Mattea\, the Seldom Scene\, and many others.  Sample their trademark harmonies on a couple of  their fine originals\, Don’t Let Me Come Home a Stranger\, and Rolling and Rambling\, their song about the death of Hank Williams.   The former features Linda’s mournful lead vocal and Robin’s trademark lonesome harmony\, a sad song indeed.   The latter performance comes from the waning years of Prairie Home Companion\, featuring fine harmonies\, too\, and\, ironically for the title\, it is very upbeat.  Their music includes bluegrass\, folk\, old-time\, and they lean a little bit country\, having made appearances on The Grand Old Opry\, Austin City Limits\, Music City Tonight\, and Mountain Stage.  They do a great job on the traditional song\, Across the Blue Mountains\, which has become a kind of a signature piece for them.   \nThey both play guitar\, and Linda plays the banjo quite a bit as well.  They engage audiences with their powerful singing\, their gift for capturing moments of universal life in their songs\, and a strong\, personal appeal. But it is their superb songwriting that has earned an even rarer honor: the devotion and deep respect of their musical peers.   \n \nTickets are $25 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) Online tickets can be purchased here (service charge will be added per ticket). Join our mailing list and you’ll be informed about such situations ahead of time. \nMore Info: www.robinandlinda.com \nTickets: $25 / $5 for Caltech students and children \nA bit more about parking if you haven’t been to one of our shows for awhile:  There will be the usual limited parking right behind the large Beckman Auditorium- It is OK to park in slots with names on weekends and evenings\, but the lot may fill up\, depending on what other events may be taking place on the Caltech campus.  This is the best place to park for the handicapped (try to come a little early- email us at info@pasadenafolkmusicsociety.org if you need help planning your visit). SUMMARY:Nevenka\, Eastern European folk ensemble in Ramo Auditorium on Saturday\, Sept. 21
DESCRIPTION:Here’s a show like no other that the Folk Music Society has offered. Nevenka is a Los Angeles-based women’s folk chorus performing songs from Eastern Europe\, including Russian\, Bulgarian\, Croatian\, Greek and others. The group formed in 1976 as an off-shoot of the Aman Folk Ensemble. These women are primarily singers\, and there may be over a dozen of them on stage! The singers span 30 years in age\, and are a close-knit family with a strong team concept. Performing a delightful mix of roots music and composed pieces\, they represent the great diversity within these East European countries. Considering that their music includes non-western rhythms and scales\, be aware these are not simple pop songs\, but deeply satisfying traditional folk music from the Balkans area. Come be transported in time and place to experience this spirited music! \nOur usual venue\, Beckman Institute Auditorium\, is closed for renovations this summer\, so we’ll be holding this one in the larger Ramo Auditorium\, which is located at the southern end of Baxter\, the eastern building of the two identical buildings on either side of the “Beckman Mall”\, the grassy area south of the round\, white Beckman Auditorium. If you know where Beckman Institute is\, we’ll have signs leading you to Ramo\, and if you don’t\, check out this map\, find building 77 and Ramo is at the bottom end. The round map on this page might help you visualize the building better. In this larger hall\, a sold out show is unlikely. \n \nTickets are $25 for adults and $5 for children. They are available for purchase at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. They can be ordered by phone (with a service charge) by calling the Ticket Office at (626) 395-4652. Tickets can be purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) Occasionally\, a show will be sold out before the day of the show\, so call the Ticket Office\, if you are planning to buy tickets at the door. Better yet\, join our mailing list and you’ll be informed about such situations ahead of time. You can buy them online (with a service charge). \n \nParking is essentially the same for Ramo as other shows\, you’ll just walk to a different building. \nMore Info: www.nevenka.org \nTickets: $25 / $5 for Caltech students and children.

SUMMARY:Scotland's Old Blind Dogs return to Pasadena Saturday\, June 22 in Ramo Auditorium
DESCRIPTION:Scotland’s Old Blind Dogs\, from Aberdeenshire\, on Scotland’s northeast coast\, has been one of the most popular acts (two of the shows sold out!) in our series over the years. They seem to have licked their visa difficulties and this will be their sixth show with us. The group consists of Jonny Hardie\, (fiddle & vocals)\, Aaron Jones (bouzouki\, guitar\, bass\, and vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes\, whistles & guitar)\, and Donald Hay (percussion). Their most recent recording is Room with a View. The Scotsman wrote: “The Old Blind Dogs play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm\, players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion.” Their soaring fiddle playing\, stirring pipes\, and fine singing\, punctuated by extraordinary percussion\, will certainly resonate. Our usual venue\, Beckman Institute Auditorium\, is closed for renovations this summer\, so we’ll be holding this one in the larger Ramo Auditorium\, which is located at the southern end of Baxter\, the eastern building of the two identical buildings on either side of the “Beckman Mall”\, the grassy area south of the round\, white Beckman Auditorium. If you know where Beckman Institute is\, we’ll have signs leading you to Ramo\, and if you don’t\, check out this map\, find building 77 and Ramo is at the bottom end. SUMMARY:Miller | MacDonald | Cormier
DESCRIPTION:Celtic trio\, Miller||MacDonald | Cormier will perform on Saturday\, May 18 at 8:00 PM. The show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium\, our usual\, intimate venue\, Beckman Institute Auditorium\, just west of the better known\, but similarly named\, Beckman Auditorium (the big white and round building at the end of Michigan Avenue). They will be making their second appearance at Caltech\, following their debut in 2017\, when they were still officially a duo\, called Ben Miller and Anita MacDonald. Ben plays the Scottish Lowland pipes\, Anita plays Cape Breton fiddle\, and they join together the threads of Old and New World traditions\, while constantly exploring new ways to bring their two traditions closer together. Zakk Cormier\, a dynamic musician with deep roots in his own Franco-Celtic tradition\, from Prince Edward Island\, backed them up in their previous performance here\, and he now returns as an official member of the trio. Zakk brings his talents as a sympathetic guitar accompanist\, as well as the driving rhythms of Acadian foot-percussion to the mix. Now based in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, Canada. they have a new recording together\, South Haven\, in which they have created a powerful sound\, transcending the boundaries between Cape Breton\, Scottish\, and Acadian traditions. They have been described as “playful\, poignant\, and passionate all at once” as well as “fresh\, yet totally traditional.” Their performances are a unique blend of driving dance music transcending boundaries – equally at home at a kitchen ceilidh or on a late night festival stage. In 2018-2019\, they have been nominated for 4 awards\, including ROOTS TRADITIONAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR\, and INSTRUMENTAL RECORDING OF THE YEAR. They will definitely get your feet moving. If you like Celtic music\, you are sure to love this concert! \n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Robin & Linda Williams
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: The new date for this show is October 26\, 2019. Learn more.\n\nWe apologize for the last minute postponement\, but Linda Williams had to have an unanticipated ankle surgery on Thursday\, April 18 and she won’t be able to put any weight on it for at least 3 weeks. The Folk Music Society\, as well as Robin and Linda\, are very sorry to make this late change. \nBecause rescheduling an entire tour can be a tricky thing\, the soonest we can probably even hope for would be an October date\, but we will let you know. We\, including Robin & Linda Williams\, are very disappointed with this turn of events. Join our mailing list and you’ll be informed about a new date when we have one. \n\nWe finally managed to arrange to have Robin and Linda Williams make their way out from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia to California! They will be bringing their vast treasure chest of tremendous original material\, songs by contemporary artists and time honored numbers from the Appalachian and blues traditions. They combine their guitars and banjo with wonderful harmonies and solo vocals\, and we always know they’ll have a great show for us. If you haven’t heard one of their shows before\, you may be familiar with their music from the long running Prairie Home Companion radio show\, Robert Altman’s last film\, Prairie Home Companion (the movie)\, or the Hopeful Gospel Choir along with Garrison Keillor and Kate MacKenzie. They have put out some very fine albums over the years\, and we are very pleased to be welcoming them back to Pasadena. This is a rare (for us) Friday show\, so make note and clear the calendar! \n \nTickets are $25 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) You can get them online\, too (for a fee) until Wednesday\, April 24 here. Occasionally\, a show will be sold out before the day of the show\, so call the Ticket Office\, if you are planning to buy tickets at the door. Better yet\, join our mailing list and you’ll be informed about such situations ahead of time. \n

SUMMARY:Jayme Stone & Folklife\, great band\, featuring Moira Smiley and others\, updating old songs based on field recordings
DESCRIPTION:We are very proud to present this fine group of musicians\, Jayme Stone and Folklife\, who explore the deep roots music of North America and beyond. This is a completely new show\, a follow-up to an earlier tour and album called the Lomax Project\, which was performed here at Caltech with a slightly different line-up three years ago. They are touring the country\, winding up in New York’s Carnegie Hall in June. Jayme Stone is a Canadian banjo innovator\, known for his bringing together diverse music\, be it Bach or from Africa. His range is tremendous and his knowledge of the music insures that it will be an authentic rendering. The program treats old field recordings from the Library of Congress not as time capsules\, but as heirloom seeds passed down from a bygone generation. Planting these sturdy seeds in modern soil\, this versatile gathering of musicians- Moira Smiley\, Sumaia Jackson & Joe Phillips– has cultivated vibrant Sea Island spirituals\, Creole calypsos\, and stomp-down Appalachian dance tunes for contemporary listeners. Focusing on songs collected from field recordings at the Library of Congress\, this ensemble preserves the essence of these fine recordings\, while polishing them just a bit with contemporary nuances. Their recording based on this project\, Jayme Stone’s Folklife\, was nominated for a Juno Award (Canada’s Grammy equivalent) in the Traditional Roots Album of the Year category in 2018. \n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. They will soon be available at the Caltech Ticket Office by calling (626) 395-4652 and at the Caltech Ticket Office in their new location at 1200 E. California Boulevard in Pasadena (Southeast corner of Wilson Avenue). Their usual hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. They will soon be available online as well.  Join our mailing list and you’ll be sure to be notified about the show a few weeks ahead of time. \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) at 400 South Wilson Avenue. On concert night\, free parking is available in the lot behind Beckman Auditorium (“Big Beckman)\, but this lot may fill up\, especially if there are other events on campus that night. You can always find parking for our shows in the two parking structures on Wilson Avenue\, just south of Del Mar Boulevard. SUMMARY:Free concert for the family- especially kids! Cambalache plays the music of Veracruz\, Mexico\, with a bit of East L.A. and a great deal of joy
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Folk Music Society\, in partnership with the Pasadena Public Library\, presents a free concert for the entire family at the Pasadena Central Library in the Donald Wright Auditorium.  Note that the concert will not be in our usual Caltech venue.  Cambalache plays Son Jarocho music of Vera Cruz\, Mexico\, birthplace of founding member\, Cesar Castro.  This music is popular on Mexico’s Gulf Coast\, a cultural region shaped by indigenous and African culture\, as well as Spanish. Cambalache’s name comes from the Spanish word for “exchange” which acknowledges the group’s emphasis on audience participation.  Cambalache features an aranja or two\, a requinto (the “little guitars”)\, Chuy Sandoval’s occasional electric guitar\, and Juan Perez’s electric upright bass\, the East L.A. influence of the band. And then there is lots of great singing\, all proving that this joyous music is for all ages.  Whether you are a longtime fan of Son Jarocho music or a newcomer\, you will be delighted by this performance.  We will also be treated to the dancing of Xochi Flores.  Most of their songs are traditional\, though they also compose originals.  Children (and accompanying adults!) will be encouraged to do a bit of dancing\, and everybody gets to sing.  Cesar\, Xochi\, and Chuy sing in Spanish\, but they describe the music in English\, and nobody is left out. This show is funded by a generous cash award to the Pasadena Folk Music Society from the Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest\, which has enabled the Folk Music Society\, with the help of the Pasadena Public Library\, to make this a free performance. \n  \n \nThe Pasadena Central Library is located at 285 E. Walnut Street in Pasadena. Free parking is available in the back of the building\, reached from Garfield Avenue\, and on Saturdays\, there are additional spaces at the adjacent University of Phoenix underground parking structure. To access it you enter the driveway near the southeast corner of Garfield and Corson streets. If you have questions\, email us at info@pasadenafolkmusicsociety.org.

SUMMARY:Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen
DESCRIPTION:We missed out on our every-two-years show with Steve Gillete and Cindy Mangsen in 2018 because of scheduling complications\, but we’re happy to welcome them back in 2019! The show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (our usual\, smaller venue.) We look forward to the great songs they bring us\, a mix of originals\, gold nuggets from some of their contemporaries\, and a few familiar standards. Steve made a big splash very early in his career when he wrote the song Darcy Farrow which was recorded by Ian and Sylvia at the height of their time together. The song—so timeless that it is thought by many to be an old traditional song—was later recorded by such performers as John Denver and Nanci Griffith. Steve has gone on to write many songs that have been recorded by other folks\, such as Kenny Rogers\, Waylon Jennings\, Tammy Wynette\, Linda Ronstadt\, Towns Van Zandt\, and Jerry Jeff Walker. He’s a songwriter’s songwriter\, and he still excels at it. \nCindy Mangsen plays guitar and concertina. She is also known for her beautiful voice. Early in her career\, she gained a reputation for her fine interpretations of haunting songs from Francis Child’s collection of Scottish and English ballads\, with their American variants. Cindy is a fine songwriter herself\, ranging from the beautiful Songlines to an entire album of cat songs! We can only hope that she will sing Rudy’s Great Adventure\, the true tale of a cat who got his head stuck in a garbage disposal. We still hope that “The Trio\,” which includes Priscilla Herdman\, Anne Hills and Cindy\, will will one day come to California to do a show. Steve and Cindy’s harmonies\, humor\, and their rapport with an audience makes their a total delight. Over the years\, they have a compiled a tremendous body of fine songs\, which they continue to add to. \n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Lúnasa
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Folk Music Society wanted to present this fabulous band\, but the quintet would not fit easily in our cozy Beckman Institute Auditorium venue\, and neither would their audience\, so we’re having this show in the biggest theater at Caltech\, Beckman Auditorum. Billed as “of the hottest Irish acoustic group on the planet”\, Lúnasa truly lives up to the press. Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god\, Lugh\, the band is composed of Kevin Crawford (flutes\, low whistles and tin whistles)\, Trevor Hutchinson (double bass)\, Ed Boyd (guitar)\, Colin Farrell (fiddle and low whistle) and Cillian Vallely (uilleann pipes and low whistles). They have sold more than a quarter of a million albums in the course of their career and boast an impressive back catalogue of 7 highly acclaimed and award-winning studio albums. \nLúnasa is internationally acknowledged as being the finest traditional Irish instrumental outfit of recent times. They are renowned for their stunning shows honed by superb musicianship and a constant touring cycle. They have performed over 1\,500 shows across 36 countries since the band formed in 1997. The band has appeared at internationally renowned venues such as The Hollywood Bowl\, National Concert Hall (Dublin)\, Sydney Opera House and Moscow International House of Music. They have been invited to appear at the White House. The band members all had impressive credentials before they joined Lúnasa\, and they continue to do extra-curricular projects when they are not on the road. Trevor went out on a European tour with his old band mates\, The Waterboys not long ago; Cillian collaborated with The Boss\, Bruce Springsteen on his 2014 release ‘High Hopes’ – the album went straight in at #1 on the album charts across the world; Kevin toured with Martin Hayes and John Doyle as The Teetotalers; while Ed has toured with Flook and Cara Dillon; while Sean transforms back to being Dr Smyth and his medical profession between Lúnasa tours. We are extremely proud to present this great\, internationally known band and we hope to see you here! \n \nTickets are $30 for adults and $10 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, and they are available online here. SUMMARY:Honey Whiskey Trio
DESCRIPTION:Honey Whiskey Trio debuted with us back in 2014 on a split bill. They have continued to get even better and now they will be back to do a full show on their own. Honey Whiskey Trio are three young women who sing mostly a cappella (also with guitar and mandolin)\, often employing body percussion. Starting with a love of folk music and an interest in jazz\, the result is music\, such as a version of House of the Rising Sun that you’ll never forget. Courtney Gasque\, Ann Louise Jeffries Thaiss & Christina Wilson met at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University\, Long Beach and they won 1st place at the regional Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival in 2013\, having only been together for four months. Then they won the national first place award four months later! Today their passion for music education\, community outreach\, and singing unapologetically continues to drive them. They create\, arrange\, and explore music from the front porches\, music halls\, and hymn books of early America\, sharing it with students\, adults\, and life-long music lovers across the United States. Honey Whiskey Trio’s harmonies are fantastic and their body slaps and foot stomps are very dramatic. You won’t want to miss this! \n\n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. They are available at the Caltech Ticket Office by calling (626) 395-4652 and at the Caltech Ticket Office in their new location at 1200 E. California Boulevard in Pasadena (Southeast corner of Wilson Avenue). Their usual hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. They are available online here. There is a fee for phone orders and for online tickets\, while purchases at the Ticket Office are free. Tickets can also be purchased (without additional fee) at the door of the venue one half hour before the show\, but it is always wise to call the Ticket Office a day or two before a show to ensure they are not close to a sold out show. We hate to have to turn people away\, which occasionally happens! On weekends and after 6:00 PM\, you may park in spaces that have individual names. Restrictive wording at the structures refers to weekdays before 6:00 PM. There is also parking available on Wilson Avenue itself. Beckman Institute is on the other side of the large lawn on Wilson Avenue\, on the first floor of the left portion of the building. SUMMARY:Lauren Sheehan and Susie Glaze sing contemporary and traditional songs from the great American folk songbook
DESCRIPTION:Lauren Sheehan and Susie Glaze share a deep connection to traditional American music with two divergent paths.  They discovered that these paths met beautifully when they joined forces to present a workshop in 2017 at the FAR-West (Regional Folk Alliance) conference on the uses of traditional music for contemporary songwriting.  On these two topics these artists are well-versed\, as their solo shows feature songs from traditional sources and their own contemporary songwriting\, which is typically infused with influences from the great American folk songbook. \nThe workshop experience was so powerful that it inspired the idea to perform together more.  The shows in Southern California will be their first shows together\, and they are very excited to join forces once again! \n  \nWhile Lauren and Susie both have a deep fluency with Anglo-influenced Appalachian music\, they bring great variety and contrast to their show.  Susie’s former Hilonesome Band furnished her with many original contemporary folk/Americana tunes (“the new ones that sound like old ones”!) and favorites from their albums such as “Blue Eyed Darlin’”\, White Swan” and “The Dark Eileen” while also presenting covers of classics from the great Steve Earle\, Linda Thompson\, David Olney and John Prine.  And her set is never fully complete without a few from her beloved Jean Ritchie.  For Lauren\, expect music played by Elizabeth Cotton\, Mississippi John\, Hurt\, Robert Johnson\, Carter Family\, E.C. Ball\, Hank Williams\, Gillian Welch and others\, delivered with extremely personal expression. \n  \nLauren will begin the show for a solo set\, with her powerful and beautiful guitar and voice\, and then Susie will bring up her quartet\, the New Folk Ensemble\, featuring Steve Rankin on mandolin\, Fred Sanders on bass and Mark Indictor on fiddle.  Each artist will do a set and they will all join together for a few songs to close.  Expect some bits of folklore\, personal stories and historic detail to flow between songs. \n  \nAbout Lauren Sheehan:   \nThis “one woman Americana juke-box …” (Huffington Post)\, sings and fingerpicks guitar\, banjo and mandolin.  She has been playing dance and social music for over 40 years\, starting with Contra dance music in Massachusetts\, then adding Irish music\, old weird American modal music and songs from the south\, country blues and early jazz\,  tin pan alley\, modern folk and original songs.  She breathes her modern soul into vintage music while retaining nuances and characteristics from the old time\, and her stylistic breath\, combined with her vocal and instrumental chops\, is impressive.  She has played with several National Heritage Fellows and makes a habit of meeting and playing with great musicians as she tours and works around her home in the Pacific Northwest.  Lauren’s music has been featured on BBC\, NPR\, Sirius Radio\, and is catalogued in the Library of Congress.\n \nAbout Susie Glaze: \nAward-winning recording artist\, journalist and critically-acclaimed powerhouse vocalist\, Susie Glaze has been called by Bluegrass Unlimited “…an important voice on the California Bluegrass scene” and by Roz Larman of KPFK’s Folkscene “…one of the most beautiful voices in bluegrass and folk music today.” A native Tennessean\, Susie appeared on Broadway in Roger Miller’s “Big River” and in California her work with folk\, bluegrass and Americana production includes performing\, recording\, journalism\, Board member of FAR-West\, and producing events. Her mentorship with the great Jean Ritchie was an honor when Susie was included on the tribute album Dear Jean\, Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie. “A flat out superb vocalist… Glaze delivers warm\, amber-toned vocals that explore the psychic depth of a lyric with deft acuity and technical perfection\,” wrote LA Weekly. And referring to Susie\, Jean Ritchie said\, “…with people like this to trust\, my music will go on living\, and soaring. And\, so will I.” \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) at 400 South Wilson Avenue. SUMMARY:Kevin Burke\, extraordinary Celtic Fiddler\, Saturday\, December 15
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back a longtime friend and major figure in Celtic music\, fiddler\, Kevin Burke. In a 30-plus year career\, Kevin has played with the Bothy Band\, Patrick Street\, Open House\, the Celtic Fiddle Festival\, and in many other combinations. As fine as he is with these various accompanists\, it is sheer pleasure to hear him with his “naked fiddle\,” as he calls it. Kevin first performed here in 1983 with the late\, great Irish singer\, Micheal Ó Domhnaill\, and then returned in 1985 with Andy Irvine and Gerry O’Beirne. In 1993\, he returned with his group\, Open House\, and he did his first of 3 solo shows here in 2001.  He also performed here with his group\, Celtic Fiddle Festival in 2015. Kevin plays in the fluid\, highly-ornamented style of County Sligo and is a recipient of the NEA’s National Heritage Award. \nThe New York Times describes Kevin as “a superior instrumentalist in any idiom……impressively virtuosic.” The Washington Post writes of his “lyrical style that is always emotionally electric\,” and the Irish Times says that “Burke’s fiddling is one of the high spots of the current Irish musical scene.” Folk Roots described his music\, “Sublime fiddle playing from Burke …. each moment\, just right” Folk Roots.  The Village Voice wrote that his playing is “lyric\, fluid and precisely as tricky as he needs to be…probably the greatest Irish fiddler living.” \nAlong with his wonderful music\, he’s a thoroughly charming man and this promises to be a delightful evening! \n \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:John McCutcheon: Singer\, songwriter\, instrumentalist extraordinaire
DESCRIPTION:John McCutcheon is certainly one of the performers most often mentioned when were are asked when one of our previous musicians will be returning to Caltech. The Washington Post once described him as the “Rustic Renaissance Man” of folk music\, and with his songwriting talent\, his voice\, his multi-instrumental talents (guitar\, hammer dulcimer\, fiddle\, autoharp\, hamboning\, and much more more)\, his ability to interpret the songs of others\, his vitality\, and involvement in social affairs\, this description is appropriate and true. Listen to his song\, I Am an Immigrant\, which he recorded way back in 2004\, and you’ll know where his is coming from and just how far out ahead of the curve he is. On the stage\, he is funny and personable. He can move you with a powerful song like Christmas in the Trenches and delight you with the alternative birthday song\, Cut the Cake. See John’s web site at www.Folkmusic.com. \nTickets are $25 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. SUMMARY:Bill Staines\, exceptional singer and songwriter makes debut at Caltech
DESCRIPTION:While we have enjoyed Bill Staines’ songs for decades\, whether on recordings or by such people as Peter\, Paul\, and Mary\, Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers\, Nanci Griffith\, Priscilla Herdman\, Jerry Jeff Walker\, and many others\, he has seldom performed here in Southern California in recent years. Songs like All God’s Critters\, The Roseville Fair\, Child of Mine\, and River\, have become folk music classics. Composer David Amram once described Bill as “a modern day Stephen Foster. His music will be around a hundred years from now.” After a few years of trying\, we’re glad to announce that Bill will be making his Caltech debut at last! He mixes a few traditional and contemporary songs in with his outstanding originals\, interspersing stories of the events and people that inspired these songs\, as well as life on the road. Nanci Griffith once wrote\, “Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977. He carries on where Woody (Guthrie) left off- carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew.” The Washington Post wrote that he is “a craftsman who has cobbled together evocative details\, pithy aphorisms and singalong melodies into a trunkful of unassuming\, marvelous songs.” His fine guitar playing frames these songs perfectly. The consummate “musician on the road”\, he continues to perform more than 175 shows a year and drives close to 70\,000 miles getting to them. He is one of the most durable and beloved singers on the folk music scene today. Come and find out why. You just might find yourself singing along! His web site is www.acousticmusic.com/staines \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Jeni Hankins\, Appalachian Singer\, songwriter and guitarist
DESCRIPTION:Jeni Hankins has been through a great deal since her two previous appearances at Caltech with Billy Kemp as Jeni and Billy. Jeni’s father passed away in 2016 and she and Billy have parted ways. And Jeni has moved to London! But the same endearing directness of this Appalachian woman from Jewell Ridge\, Virginia still shines through. Jeni has just released her first solo recording\, The Oxygen Girl and you can read Art Podell’s glowing review here. Her stories come from a broader geography\, ranging from England to Las Vegas and places in between. They also relfect the emotions and insights following the passing of her father. Jeni plays guitar and banjo\, and has been known to bring an autoharp or another instrument or two along. She just might do a little flat foot dancing\, too. We hear she is going to perform with a sewing machine in this show! We will likely hear some of the old songs\, the new ones\, and maybe some brand new songs! You will want to be here! See her web site Jenihankins.com \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Tannahill Weavers celebrate 50th anniversary!
DESCRIPTION:The Tannahill Weavers first came together in 1968 in Paisley\, Scotland. Current member\, Roy Gullane\, came into the group in 1970 and Phil Smillie\, also a current member\, joined at age 16 a short time after that. They didn’t release their first record until 1976\, but by that time\, they had established the idea that a Highland bagpiper does belong in a Scottish band (they were one of the first to do this)\, and they went on to gain fame\, not only in the British Isles\, but also in Europe and here in North America. John Martin\, the band’s current fiddler\, joined in 1990\, following stints with Ossian and Easy Club. The new guy\, added since their last performance at Caltech in 2014 is Lorne MacDougall\, who was a nominee for Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2012 Scots Trad Music Awards\, on bagpipes. They have produced 17 recordings and in 2011 the band was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. From reflective ballads to footstomping reels and jigs\, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits. The Boston Globe wrote\, “Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers play acoustic instruments\, but the atmosphere at their shows is electric. The quartet is as tight and as versatile as any band in the Celtic music revival. They can summon rock ‘n’ roll intensity or haunting introspection.” It seems to work out that we’ve been able to get them at Caltech every 4 years\, so don’t miss this chance! Their web site is Tannahillweavers.com \nTickets are $25 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.)
