From the start\, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and energized audiences the world over. Critical acclaim followed. DESCRIPTION:After performing with Pasadena Folk Music Society for more than twenty years\, both with Old Blind Dogs and solo\, Jim is extremely fond of our organization and the wonderful spirit of our audiences\, and he’s delighted to be coming back. \nAs both singer and songwriter\, Jim Malcolm is one of the most distinctive voices in Scottish music\, “one of the finest singing voices in Scotland in any style”. He was lead singer of the phenomenal Scottish band Old Blind Dogs for seven years\, touring extensively throughout Europe and North America and playing at many of the biggest folk festivals. In 2004\, Jim was songwriter of the year in the Scots Trad Music Awards\, and he has been nominated three times for Scots Singer of the Year. He has a huge repertoire of songs from the Scottish tradition and is a noted interpreter of Burns. DESCRIPTION:Andy Irvine is one of the great Irish singers\, his voice one of a handful of truly great ones that gets to the very soul of Ireland. He has been hailed as “a tradition in himself”. \nMusician\, singer\, songwriter\, Andy has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout his over 60-year career. \nAndy has been at the helm of legendary bands like Sweeney’s Men in the mid 60s\, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s\, and then Patrick Street\, Mozaik\, LAPD and recently Usher’s Island. Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians. See the full list of his recordings here. \nAs a soloist\, Andy fills the role of the archetypal troubadour with a show and a travelling lifestyle that reflect his lifelong influence\, Woody Guthrie. His far-reaching solo album\, “If the Cap Fits”\, and his work with such distinguished performers as Arlo Guthrie\, Kate Bush\, Christy Moore and the Bothy Band established him as a first class musician. Never one to be restricted by geography or genre\, his decades long career has seen several innovative collaborations with notable musicians of differing styles – Classical\, Old Time\, Bluegrass\, Pop and Rock as well as the Irish Traditional music for which he is so well known. He has worked with Grammy winner\, singer and instrumentalist Tim O’Brien; Liam O Maonlai\, lead singer of the Hothouse Flowers; classical violinists Gilles Apap and Greg Ewer; Old Time favourites The Foghorn String Band; and renowned Irish bands Dervish\, Solas and Lunasa. His most recent recording is a collaboration with veteran Rock guitarist John Brennan (Poco\, Chris Hillman Band and others). \nHis contribution to music has received formal acknowledgement on both sides of the Atlantic where he has been the recipient of several awards including Ireland’s “Gradam Ceoil” (Traditional Musician of the Year\, 2016)\, and a National Heritage Fellowship\, the USA’s highest honor for excellence in the folk and traditional arts. (Previous National Heritage Fellows include B.B. King\, Doc Watson\, and Bill Monroe.) Kathy also did a show here with Laurie Lewis\, her longtime friend and fellow co-founder of the Good Ol’ Persons.  The Kathy Kallick Band’s music is upbeat\, energetic\, and traditional\, all at the same time\, and has a lot of heart.  They do some sad songs\, too.  A few examples of their style include Kathy’s song Foxhounds; the instrumental Lonesome Dobro Blues\, a  tune by Greg Booth\, showcasing their great instrumental prowess; and their version of the Osborne Brothers’ There’s a Higher Power. \n \nNote that this show only is at a different location  (a few blocks away) and starts a half hour earlier at 7:30 PM\,  doors open at 7:00 PM. \nThe concert is Saturday\, November 16 at Knox Presbyterian Church\, 225 S. DESCRIPTION:Traveling the world with his guitar\, harmonicas\, and engaging wit\, he sings the traditional songs of Scotland and his own masterfully crafted songs in a style which is modern and accessible\, yet utterly authentic. He is highly regarded as an interpreter of the songs of Robert Burns\, and has been described as “one of the finest singers in Scotland in\nany style”. \nThough he now works solo\, Jim was lead singer with the world‐ renowned and multi‐award‐winning Old Blind Dogs for eight years\, a fantastic experience with some of Scotland’s finest musicians\, taking him to the most prestigious festivals in North America and all over Europe. \nWith family roots in Perthshire and Strathclyde\, Jim has been a professional musician since graduating from Edinburgh University. His first arena was the folk music scene in Scotland\, where he gigged in almost every town and isle from Berwick to Benbecula and from Stranraer to Lerwick. Working solo or in various bands and combos in far flung pubs\, hotels and clubs toughened him up for a future life on the road. DESCRIPTION:Fiddler Mari Black\, a multi-style violinist\, plays with sparkling virtuosity that has won major fiddle competitions in the United States\, Scotland and Canada.  Her talent\, enthusiasm and playful storytelling carry toe-tapping audiences on an international musical adventure. DESCRIPTION:When troubador John McCutcheon laid plans for a 2023 concert series to be presented online in collaboration with our organization and others\, he said to “expect the unexpected” in the last of the four concerts.  He will perform that one\, “Jackpot! Ticket-holders get links for watching the show live and also for replaying the show any time in the 48 hours afterwards. SUMMARY:Old Blind Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Old Blind Dogs launched their fourteenth studio album ‘Knucklehead Circus’ in Winter 2021 and will celebrate thirty years on the road in 2022. \n“The Old Blind Dogs play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm\, …as players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion\,” says a reviewer for The Scotsman\, a Scottish national newspaper. The band is known for soaring fiddle playing\, stirring pipes\, and fine singing\, punctuated by extraordinary percussion. A reviewer for the Bright Young Folk website says the current members “create such a tight sound with rhythms\, harmonies\, melodies and lyrics that sweep you along in whichever direction they choose.” \nOld Blind Dogs formed in 1992 in Aberdeen\, Scotland\, and first played for us in 2002. The band’s personnel has changed some over the years\, though it’s still the same as their 2019 Caltech show: original-member Jonny Hardie on fiddle and vocals\, Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals). \nInducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame in 2020 their traditional Scottish music also contains influences from jazz\, blues\, Middle Eastern music\, reggae and rock. DESCRIPTION:Our online John McCutcheon concert\, “The Story Behind the Song\,” will occur on May 7.  You can get tickets at this link up to the last minute\, but one special feature is that McCutcheon (photo above) is taking requests\, and he asks to get them early. \nUnlike our other online concerts so far this year\, the May 7 one is on a Saturday\, at 5 p.m.  Like the others\, a ticket will entitle you to enjoy it any time for two days afterward\, in case the show time is inconvenient or you want to hear it again. McCutcheon is an accomplished storyteller as well as a musician and songwriter.  The International Storytelling Center says he has “a storytelling style compared to Will Rogers and Garrison Keillor.”  In this solo show\, he’ll tell about songs that ticket-holders request to hear. \n“For years\, because I write so many songs that are stories\, people have been wanting to know: ‘Well\, how did you come up with that?  What made you want to write something about that?  Is that true?’” McCutcheon said during his April 10 online show with other musicians.  When you receive your ticket confirmation from Mandolin (the outfit handling logistics of the show)\, that email will include a link for requesting a song.  “Get them in early\,” McCutcheon suggested\, “because that will give me some time to prepare\, especially if you want to hear a song I haven’t done in a good long time.” \nTickets for “The Story Behind the Song” are $20 plus a $4 handling fee.  You can find other pricing options in the drop-down menu next to “Livestream Ticket.”  The options include discounts for students or unemployed people and premiums for a family/household ticket or music supporter ticket.  A portion of the ticket revenue through Mandolin comes to our Folk Music Society.  That helps with expenses related to resuming live\, in-person concerts as concerns about the pandemic are resolved. \nMcCutcheon has written hundreds of songs. Many of them refer to historical events.  One of his best-known\, Christmas in the Trenches\, tells of a World War One holiday.  His heart-wrenching Streets of Sarajevo draws from cellist Vedran Smailovic‘s response to a 1992 bombing (which also led to a children’s book\, Flowers for Sarajevo\, by McCutcheon and illustrator Kristy Caldwell).  McCutcheon’s more-recent Zilphia’s Piano sings about the origin of the anthem We Shall Overcome.  His Forgotten taps into  inspiration from Malala Yousafzai.  His Vote\, Dammit!\, from the late John Lewis. \nFor examples of how McCutcheon’s storytelling introductions augment his songs\, check this performance of Doing My Job\, about baseball’s Cal Ripken\, or his introduction to Streets of Sarajevo beginning at minute 53 of this concert recorded in 2017.  He says Smailovic’s 22-day tribute exemplifies a quote from Leonard Bernstein: “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely\, more beautifully\, more devotedly than ever before.”  It’s fair to say that McCutcheon‘s own career does\, too.

DESCRIPTION:Master fiddler\, Mari Black\, is bringing her World Fiddle Ensemble to Pasadena for a show called Fiddling Around the World. The show is a high-energy tour of fiddle music from all different corners of the globe\, featuring a bit of background about the tunes\, with Mari as the musical tour guide. She has won numerous contests and honors\, and her passion for the fiddle knows no bounds. From her hometown of Boston she has played concerts in Scotland\, Brazil\, Canada\, China\, Korea\, Zimbabwe\, Hungary\, Poland\, the Czech Republic\, Italy\, and France\, and she can’t wait for the next stop! She has played folk venues\, jazz concert series\, Argentine tango festivals\, and world-famous classical concert venues including Carnegie Hall. She draws from jazz\, tango\, folk\, Western classical\, as well as Celtic\, American\, and Canadian fiddling. Her performances take listeners on a musical journey exploring the diversity and celebrating commonalities in the dance-driven folk musics of the world. She has has appeared with such diverse artists as Irish fiddle champion Liz Carroll\, Americana master Mark O’Connor\, and jazzman Willie Ruff. Audiences are taken not just by her musical prowess\, but also her passion and energy. Dr. John Turner\, 10-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion\, said\, “Mari Black is an extraordinary musician; her sound is musical enthusiasm personified.” Come take a trip around the world with us! \n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. They are available at the Caltech Ticket Office by calling (626) 395-4652 and at the Caltech Ticket Office at 1200 E. California Boulevard in Pasadena (Southeast corner of Wilson Avenue). Their usual hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. Tickets are sold for face value if you come to the Ticket Office. There are fees for phone orders by credit/debit card and for online tickets as well. You can also buy tickets at the door on the night of the show with no additional fees. We begin admitting people into the auditorium at about 7:15 PM. \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium at 400 South Wilson Avenue. On concert night\, free parking is available in the lot behind Beckman Auditorium (the large round\, white building at the end of Michigan Avenue)\, but this lot may fill up\, especially if there are other events on campus that night. You can always find parking for our shows in the two parking structures on Wilson Avenue\, just south of Del Mar Boulevard. On weekends and after 6:00 PM\, you may park in spaces that have individual names. Restrictive wording at the structures refers to weekdays before 6:00 PM. There is also parking available on Wilson Avenue itself. Beckman Institute is on the other side of the large lawn (currently a staging area for nearby construction) on Wilson Avenue\, on the first floor of the left portion of the building. The parking lots between Michigan and Wilson have been closed- a new building is rapidly rising at the southeast corner of Wilson and Del Mar.  The most reliable parking will be on Wilson Avenue\, either on the street or in the two parking structures just south of Del Mar Avenue\, across the street from Beckman Institute.   One structure is just north of the Institute at 341 S. Wilson Avenue\, and the other\, 405 S. Wilson\, is just a bit south of the Institute.   Rest assured that after 5PM on weekdays\, and all day on weekends\, you can park for free in these structures\, despite signs that allude to the more restricted parking rules during the day on weekdays.   You are permitted to park in slots that have names on them here as well.  From the structures\, walk around the big lawn (much of which is currently fenced in for the building projet to the north) in front of Beckman Institute and you will recognize where to go.  On this map\, we are suggesting that you park in structures #123 and #124 in the upper left. Beckman Institute is building #74\, just to the east (right).
