DESCRIPTION:The John McCutcheon series will continue on Sunday\, March 19 with “The Women Who Made Me”. DESCRIPTION:When troubador John McCutcheon laid plans for a 2023 concert series to be presented online in collaboration with our organization and others\, he said to “expect the unexpected” in the last of the four concerts.  He will perform that one\, “Jackpot! A Wild Card Show\,” on Saturday\, May 13.  Sure enough\, there has already been a surprise.  The online platform that had been the ticket-handler and log-on address for some excellent livestreamed concerts in the past two years\, Mandolin\, abruptly went out of business two weeks ago.  McCutcheon personnally hustled to arrange another way to stream the concert.  If you already purchased a ticket through Mandolin\, it will be honored; you will get log-on information via email.  If you don’t have a ticket yet\, here is the new link. \nFor this May 13 concert\, McCutcheon plans to bring out some songs\, instruments and stories that haven’t been part of his previous concerts\, and also to include some popular favorites from his five-decade\, 43-album career.  “Expect the unexpected and there might even be a surprise guest or two\,” says his web page…. what won’t be a surprise for any McCutcheon concert is that you’ll hear powerfully written songs\, virtuosity on multiple instruments\, engaging stories and impressively clear singing. \nThe “Jackpot!” livestream will begin at 4 p.m. Pacific Time.  Ticket-holders get access to unlimited replays within 48 hours after the live show\, handy for shifting the concert to a later hour or enjoying it a second time.  Twenty dollars gets you a regular ticket.  Other options in the drop-down menu for online tickets are discounts for students or unemployed people and premiums for a family/household ticket or music supporter ticket.  A bit of the ticket money goes to the Pasadena Folk Music Society\, which will help us present in-person shows in future months.

SUMMARY:Mari Black Trio ‘Fiddling Around the World’
DESCRIPTION:Fiddler Mari Black\, a multi-style violinist\, plays with sparkling virtuosity that has won major fiddle competitions in the United States\, Scotland and Canada.  Her talent\, enthusiasm and playful storytelling carry toe-tapping audiences on an international musical adventure. Check out a medley of three tunes here\, including two that she wrote herself. She and her accompanists sweep audiences away on a spirited musical adventure featuring dance music from around the globe: Celtic\, American\, and Canadian fiddling\, jazz\, tango\, klezmer\, folk\, original works\, and more. \nThe concert will be on Saturday\, Sept. 16\, at 8 p.m in the Beckman Institute Auditorium\, where all 200 seats are close to the performers.  It is at 400 South Wilson Avenue\, in the Beckman Institute building directly west of the much-larger\, round Beckman Auditorium. \nAdvance electronic tickets are now available online here for this special show at Beckman Institute Auditorium on the Caltech campus. DESCRIPTION:Traveling the world with his guitar\, harmonicas\, and engaging wit\, he sings the traditional songs of Scotland and his own masterfully crafted songs in a style which is modern and accessible\, yet utterly authentic. He is highly regarded as an interpreter of the songs of Robert Burns\, and has been described as “one of the finest singers in Scotland in\nany style”. \nThough he now works solo\, Jim was lead singer with the world‐ renowned and multi‐award‐winning Old Blind Dogs for eight years\, a fantastic experience with some of Scotland’s finest musicians\, taking him to the most prestigious festivals in North America and all over Europe. \nWith family roots in Perthshire and Strathclyde\, Jim has been a professional musician since graduating from Edinburgh University. His first arena was the folk music scene in Scotland\, where he gigged in almost every town and isle from Berwick to Benbecula and from Stranraer to Lerwick. Working solo or in various bands and combos in far flung pubs\, hotels and clubs toughened him up for a future life on the road. Solo tours in England\, Ireland\, Denmark and Germany followed\, including musical adventures in some off‐the‐\ncharts places like Uganda. \nThe list of artists who have performed and recorded his work is steadily growing\, but includes Kate Rusby with The Poozies\, Beppe Gambetta from Italy\, Uiscedwr\, The McCalmans\, Alyth McCormack\, North Sea Gas and Tich Frier. In 2004 he was voted songwriter of the year at the annual Scots Trad Music Awards and to date he is the most nominated Scots singer for the Scots Singer of the Year Award\, having been nominated three times. \nSusie Malcolm is an award-winning singer with a special knowledge of the musical traditions of North East Scotland. She was the first woman ever to win a singing competition for Bothy Ballads\, agricultural songs\, and has been singing in folk clubs and at festivals around Scotland since her early 20s. Hill Ave.\, Pasadena\, several blocks from Caltech.  Knox Presbyterian Church has a parking lot and nearby street parking. Parking may also be available at a Pasadena City College (PCC) lot\, across the street\, for $2. Please read the posted signs before using the PCC lot as it may have temporary hours depending on whether the lot will be used the next morning for a local market. \nAdvanced tickets can be purchased here. SUMMARY:Irish Fiddle Legend Kevin Burke - Now Sold Out
DESCRIPTION:As of May 14th\, this concert is sold out. No tickets will be available at the door.  \nKevin Burke’s fiddle playing has been at the forefront of traditional music since the  1970’s. His far-reaching solo album\, “If the Cap Fits”\, and his work with such distinguished performers as Arlo Guthrie\, Kate Bush\, Christy Moore and the Bothy Band established him as a first class musician. Never one to be restricted by geography or genre\, his decades long career has seen several innovative collaborations with notable musicians of differing styles – Classical\, Old Time\, Bluegrass\, Pop and Rock as well as the Irish Traditional music for which he is so well known. He has worked with Grammy winner\, singer and instrumentalist Tim O’Brien; Liam O Maonlai\, lead singer of the Hothouse Flowers; classical violinists Gilles Apap and Greg Ewer; Old Time favourites The Foghorn String Band; and renowned Irish bands Dervish\, Solas and Lunasa. His most recent recording is a collaboration with veteran Rock guitarist John Brennan (Poco\, Chris Hillman Band and others). \nHis contribution to music has received formal acknowledgement on both sides of the Atlantic where he has been the recipient of several awards including Ireland’s “Gradam Ceoil” (Traditional Musician of the Year\, 2016)\, and a National Heritage Fellowship\, the USA’s highest honor for excellence in the folk and traditional arts. (Previous National Heritage Fellows include B.B. King\, Doc Watson\, and Bill Monroe.) DESCRIPTION:Andy Irvine is one of the great Irish singers\, his voice one of a handful of truly great ones that gets to the very soul of Ireland. He has been hailed as “a tradition in himself”. \nMusician\, singer\, songwriter\, Andy has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout his over 60-year career. \nAndy has been at the helm of legendary bands like Sweeney’s Men in the mid 60s\, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s\, and then Patrick Street\, Mozaik\, LAPD and recently Usher’s Island. Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians. See the full list of his recordings here. \nAs a soloist\, Andy fills the role of the archetypal troubadour with a show and a travelling lifestyle that reflect his lifelong influence\, Woody Guthrie. Every performance is like stepping into a river—they never play a song the same way twice. They make music inspired by the maritime traditions of Scotland\, Ireland\, Scandinavia and North America. Their album titles—Harbour and Headland—honor the meeting point between the land and sea and they sing songs about shorelines\, seafarers and drownings. They revel in the driving danceability of Irish tunes\, but also take inspiration from the pastoral melodies and naturalistic metaphors of Scottish music. But while the music they write is forged in tradition\, it is nonetheless cast and tempered in new and unexpected ways. \nKalos is an ancient Greek word that means “beautiful” or “praiseworthy” and the root of the English words “calligraphy” and “calisthenics.” Like a fine calligrapher or adept gymnast\, each musician possesses a profound attention to detail and form. In 1996 he became the youngest ever winner of the US National Scottish Fiddle Championship. In 1997 he was awarded a Merit Scholarship for Viola Performance from the University of Southern California. Over the years Ryan has recorded with a number of influential artists including Scottish fiddle champion Hanneke Cassel’s albums Silver (2006)\, For Reasons Unseen (2009)\, and Dot the Dragon’s Eyes (2013)\, as well as Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas’s recording Highlander’s Farewell (2011). \nEric MacDonald (guitar\, mandolin\, lead vocals) is now established as one of the USA’s premier accompanists in many styles. He is an active session player\, regularly recording and traveling with musicians of many stripes. In addition to guitar accompaniment\, Eric’s debut solo album Rove features his unique style and approach to tunes on the mandolin\, as well as carefully crafted deliveries of traditional ballads on voice and guitar. \nJeremiah McLane (accordion\, piano\, background vocals) has spent several decades traveling in Europe\, doing field research that laid the groundwork for a Master’s degree from the New England Conservatory. Tickets at the door will be $35 and $10. \nAberdeenshire folksinger\, Iona Fyfe\, has become one of Scotland’s finest singers\, rooted deeply in the singing traditions of the North East of Scotland. In 2021\, she became the first singer to win the coveted title of Musician of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards. A two-time winner of Scots Singer of the Year\, Iona has performed across Europe\, the US\, Canada and Australia. \nGrowing up within the Traditional Music and Song Association movement\, Iona met many revivalist singers such as Jimmie Hutchison\, Joe Aitken and Carole Prior who influenced her ballad and bothy ballad style. Attending singarounds\, ceilidhs and competitions from 5 years of age\, Iona learnt her repertoire mainly through oral transmission and is still a regular within the competitive ballad circuit. \n \nIona is a fierce advocate for the official recognition of the Scots Language\, leading a successful campaign to pressure Spotify into recognising Scots and add it to its list of languages. Honoured at the Scots Language Awards with the title of Speaker of the Year in 2021\, Iona performs both folk and pop songs in the Scots language\, remaining true to her rooting in tradition.
