SUMMARY:Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen
DESCRIPTION:We missed out on our every-two-years show with Steve Gillete and Cindy Mangsen in 2018 because of scheduling complications\, but we’re happy to welcome them back in 2019! The show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (our usual\, smaller venue.) We look forward to the great songs they bring us\, a mix of originals\, gold nuggets from some of their contemporaries\, and a few familiar standards. Steve made a big splash very early in his career when he wrote the song Darcy Farrow which was recorded by Ian and Sylvia at the height of their time together. The song—so timeless that it is thought by many to be an old traditional song—was later recorded by such performers as John Denver and Nanci Griffith. Steve has gone on to write many songs that have been recorded by other folks\, such as Kenny Rogers\, Waylon Jennings\, Tammy Wynette\, Linda Ronstadt\, Towns Van Zandt\, and Jerry Jeff Walker. He’s a songwriter’s songwriter\, and he still excels at it. \nCindy Mangsen plays guitar and concertina. She is also known for her beautiful voice. Early in her career\, she gained a reputation for her fine interpretations of haunting songs from Francis Child’s collection of Scottish and English ballads\, with their American variants. Cindy is a fine songwriter herself\, ranging from the beautiful Songlines to an entire album of cat songs! We can only hope that she will sing Rudy’s Great Adventure\, the true tale of a cat who got his head stuck in a garbage disposal. We still hope that “The Trio\,” which includes Priscilla Herdman\, Anne Hills and Cindy\, will will one day come to California to do a show. Steve and Cindy’s harmonies\, humor\, and their rapport with an audience makes their a total delight. Over the years\, they have a compiled a tremendous body of fine songs\, which they continue to add to. \n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) Online tickets can be purchased here (service charge will be added per ticket). SUMMARY:Lúnasa
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Folk Music Society wanted to present this fabulous band\, but the quintet would not fit easily in our cozy Beckman Institute Auditorium venue\, and neither would their audience\, so we’re having this show in the biggest theater at Caltech\, Beckman Auditorum. Billed as “of the hottest Irish acoustic group on the planet”\, Lúnasa truly lives up to the press. Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god\, Lugh\, the band is composed of Kevin Crawford (flutes\, low whistles and tin whistles)\, Trevor Hutchinson (double bass)\, Ed Boyd (guitar)\, Colin Farrell (fiddle and low whistle) and Cillian Vallely (uilleann pipes and low whistles). They have sold more than a quarter of a million albums in the course of their career and boast an impressive back catalogue of 7 highly acclaimed and award-winning studio albums. \nLúnasa is internationally acknowledged as being the finest traditional Irish instrumental outfit of recent times. They are renowned for their stunning shows honed by superb musicianship and a constant touring cycle. They have performed over 1\,500 shows across 36 countries since the band formed in 1997. The band has appeared at internationally renowned venues such as The Hollywood Bowl\, National Concert Hall (Dublin)\, Sydney Opera House and Moscow International House of Music. They have been invited to appear at the White House. The band members all had impressive credentials before they joined Lúnasa\, and they continue to do extra-curricular projects when they are not on the road. Trevor went out on a European tour with his old band mates\, The Waterboys not long ago; Cillian collaborated with The Boss\, Bruce Springsteen on his 2014 release ‘High Hopes’ – the album went straight in at #1 on the album charts across the world; Kevin toured with Martin Hayes and John Doyle as The Teetotalers; while Ed has toured with Flook and Cara Dillon; while Sean transforms back to being Dr Smyth and his medical profession between Lúnasa tours. We are extremely proud to present this great\, internationally known band and we hope to see you here! \n \nTickets are $30 for adults and $10 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, and they are available online here. Note that there is a fee for ordering by phone or online. SUMMARY:Honey Whiskey Trio
DESCRIPTION:Honey Whiskey Trio debuted with us back in 2014 on a split bill. They have continued to get even better and now they will be back to do a full show on their own. Honey Whiskey Trio are three young women who sing mostly a cappella (also with guitar and mandolin)\, often employing body percussion. Starting with a love of folk music and an interest in jazz\, the result is music\, such as a version of House of the Rising Sun that you’ll never forget. Courtney Gasque\, Ann Louise Jeffries Thaiss & Christina Wilson met at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University\, Long Beach and they won 1st place at the regional Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival in 2013\, having only been together for four months. Then they won the national first place award four months later! Today their passion for music education\, community outreach\, and singing unapologetically continues to drive them. They create\, arrange\, and explore music from the front porches\, music halls\, and hymn books of early America\, sharing it with students\, adults\, and life-long music lovers across the United States. Honey Whiskey Trio’s harmonies are fantastic and their body slaps and foot stomps are very dramatic. You won’t want to miss this! \n\n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. They are available at the Caltech Ticket Office by calling (626) 395-4652 and at the Caltech Ticket Office in their new location at 1200 E. California Boulevard in Pasadena (Southeast corner of Wilson Avenue). Their usual hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. They are available online here. There is a fee for phone orders and for online tickets\, while purchases at the Ticket Office are free. Tickets can also be purchased (without additional fee) at the door of the venue one half hour before the show\, but it is always wise to call the Ticket Office a day or two before a show to ensure they are not close to a sold out show. We hate to have to turn people away\, which occasionally happens! Join our mailing list and you’ll be sure to be notified about the show a few weeks ahead of time. \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) at 400 South Wilson Avenue. On concert night\, free parking is available in the lot behind Beckman Auditorium (“Big Beckman)\, but this lot may fill up\, especially if there are other events on campus that night. You can always find parking for our shows in the two parking structures on Wilson Avenue\, just south of Del Mar Boulevard. There is also parking available on Wilson Avenue itself. Beckman Institute is on the other side of the large lawn on Wilson Avenue\, on the first floor of the left portion of the building. SUMMARY:Lauren Sheehan and Susie Glaze sing contemporary and traditional songs from the great American folk songbook
DESCRIPTION:Lauren Sheehan and Susie Glaze share a deep connection to traditional American music with two divergent paths.  They discovered that these paths met beautifully when they joined forces to present a workshop in 2017 at the FAR-West (Regional Folk Alliance) conference on the uses of traditional music for contemporary songwriting.  On these two topics these artists are well-versed\, as their solo shows feature songs from traditional sources and their own contemporary songwriting\, which is typically infused with influences from the great American folk songbook. \nThe workshop experience was so powerful that it inspired the idea to perform together more.  The shows in Southern California will be their first shows together\, and they are very excited to join forces once again! \n  \nWhile Lauren and Susie both have a deep fluency with Anglo-influenced Appalachian music\, they bring great variety and contrast to their show.  Susie’s former Hilonesome Band furnished her with many original contemporary folk/Americana tunes (“the new ones that sound like old ones”!) and favorites from their albums such as “Blue Eyed Darlin’”\, White Swan” and “The Dark Eileen” while also presenting covers of classics from the great Steve Earle\, Linda Thompson\, David Olney and John Prine.  And her set is never fully complete without a few from her beloved Jean Ritchie.  For Lauren\, expect music played by Elizabeth Cotton\, Mississippi John\, Hurt\, Robert Johnson\, Carter Family\, E.C. Ball\, Hank Williams\, Gillian Welch and others\, delivered with extremely personal expression. \n  \nLauren will begin the show for a solo set\, with her powerful and beautiful guitar and voice\, and then Susie will bring up her quartet\, the New Folk Ensemble\, featuring Steve Rankin on mandolin\, Fred Sanders on bass and Mark Indictor on fiddle.  Each artist will do a set and they will all join together for a few songs to close.  Expect some bits of folklore\, personal stories and historic detail to flow between songs. \n  \nAbout Lauren Sheehan:   \nThis “one woman Americana juke-box …” (Huffington Post)\, sings and fingerpicks guitar\, banjo and mandolin.  She has been playing dance and social music for over 40 years\, starting with Contra dance music in Massachusetts\, then adding Irish music\, old weird American modal music and songs from the south\, country blues and early jazz\,  tin pan alley\, modern folk and original songs.  She breathes her modern soul into vintage music while retaining nuances and characteristics from the old time\, and her stylistic breath\, combined with her vocal and instrumental chops\, is impressive.  She has played with several National Heritage Fellows and makes a habit of meeting and playing with great musicians as she tours and works around her home in the Pacific Northwest.  Lauren’s music has been featured on BBC\, NPR\, Sirius Radio\, and is catalogued in the Library of Congress.\n \nAbout Susie Glaze: \nAward-winning recording artist\, journalist and critically-acclaimed powerhouse vocalist\, Susie Glaze has been called by Bluegrass Unlimited “…an important voice on the California Bluegrass scene” and by Roz Larman of KPFK’s Folkscene “…one of the most beautiful voices in bluegrass and folk music today.” A native Tennessean\, Susie appeared on Broadway in Roger Miller’s “Big River” and in California her work with folk\, bluegrass and Americana production includes performing\, recording\, journalism\, Board member of FAR-West\, and producing events. Her mentorship with the great Jean Ritchie was an honor when Susie was included on the tribute album Dear Jean\, Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie. “A flat out superb vocalist… Glaze delivers warm\, amber-toned vocals that explore the psychic depth of a lyric with deft acuity and technical perfection\,” wrote LA Weekly. And referring to Susie\, Jean Ritchie said\, “…with people like this to trust\, my music will go on living\, and soaring. And\, so will I.” \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) at 400 South Wilson Avenue. On concert night\, free parking is available in the lot behind Beckman Auditorium (“Big Beckman)\, but this lot may fill up\, especially if there are other events on campus that night. SUMMARY:Kevin Burke\, extraordinary Celtic Fiddler\, Saturday\, December 15
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back a longtime friend and major figure in Celtic music\, fiddler\, Kevin Burke. In a 30-plus year career\, Kevin has played with the Bothy Band\, Patrick Street\, Open House\, the Celtic Fiddle Festival\, and in many other combinations. As fine as he is with these various accompanists\, it is sheer pleasure to hear him with his “naked fiddle\,” as he calls it. Kevin first performed here in 1983 with the late\, great Irish singer\, Micheal Ó Domhnaill\, and then returned in 1985 with Andy Irvine and Gerry O’Beirne. In 1993\, he returned with his group\, Open House\, and he did his first of 3 solo shows here in 2001.  He also performed here with his group\, Celtic Fiddle Festival in 2015. Kevin plays in the fluid\, highly-ornamented style of County Sligo and is a recipient of the NEA’s National Heritage Award. \nThe New York Times describes Kevin as “a superior instrumentalist in any idiom……impressively virtuosic.” The Washington Post writes of his “lyrical style that is always emotionally electric\,” and the Irish Times says that “Burke’s fiddling is one of the high spots of the current Irish musical scene.” Folk Roots described his music\, “Sublime fiddle playing from Burke …. each moment\, just right” Folk Roots.  The Village Voice wrote that his playing is “lyric\, fluid and precisely as tricky as he needs to be…probably the greatest Irish fiddler living.” \nAlong with his wonderful music\, he’s a thoroughly charming man and this promises to be a delightful evening! \n \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:John McCutcheon: Singer\, songwriter\, instrumentalist extraordinaire
DESCRIPTION:John McCutcheon is certainly one of the performers most often mentioned when were are asked when one of our previous musicians will be returning to Caltech. The Washington Post once described him as the “Rustic Renaissance Man” of folk music\, and with his songwriting talent\, his voice\, his multi-instrumental talents (guitar\, hammer dulcimer\, fiddle\, autoharp\, hamboning\, and much more more)\, his ability to interpret the songs of others\, his vitality\, and involvement in social affairs\, this description is appropriate and true. Listen to his song\, I Am an Immigrant\, which he recorded way back in 2004\, and you’ll know where his is coming from and just how far out ahead of the curve he is. On the stage\, he is funny and personable. He can move you with a powerful song like Christmas in the Trenches and delight you with the alternative birthday song\, Cut the Cake. See John’s web site at www.Folkmusic.com. \nTickets are $25 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Bill Staines\, exceptional singer and songwriter makes debut at Caltech
DESCRIPTION:While we have enjoyed Bill Staines’ songs for decades\, whether on recordings or by such people as Peter\, Paul\, and Mary\, Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers\, Nanci Griffith\, Priscilla Herdman\, Jerry Jeff Walker\, and many others\, he has seldom performed here in Southern California in recent years. Songs like All God’s Critters\, The Roseville Fair\, Child of Mine\, and River\, have become folk music classics. Composer David Amram once described Bill as “a modern day Stephen Foster. His music will be around a hundred years from now.” After a few years of trying\, we’re glad to announce that Bill will be making his Caltech debut at last! He mixes a few traditional and contemporary songs in with his outstanding originals\, interspersing stories of the events and people that inspired these songs\, as well as life on the road. Nanci Griffith once wrote\, “Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977. He carries on where Woody (Guthrie) left off- carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew.” The Washington Post wrote that he is “a craftsman who has cobbled together evocative details\, pithy aphorisms and singalong melodies into a trunkful of unassuming\, marvelous songs.” His fine guitar playing frames these songs perfectly. The consummate “musician on the road”\, he continues to perform more than 175 shows a year and drives close to 70\,000 miles getting to them. He is one of the most durable and beloved singers on the folk music scene today. Come and find out why. You just might find yourself singing along! His web site is www.acousticmusic.com/staines \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Jeni Hankins\, Appalachian Singer\, songwriter and guitarist
DESCRIPTION:Jeni Hankins has been through a great deal since her two previous appearances at Caltech with Billy Kemp as Jeni and Billy. Jeni’s father passed away in 2016 and she and Billy have parted ways. And Jeni has moved to London! But the same endearing directness of this Appalachian woman from Jewell Ridge\, Virginia still shines through. Jeni has just released her first solo recording\, The Oxygen Girl and you can read Art Podell’s glowing review here. Her stories come from a broader geography\, ranging from England to Las Vegas and places in between. They also relfect the emotions and insights following the passing of her father. Jeni plays guitar and banjo\, and has been known to bring an autoharp or another instrument or two along. She just might do a little flat foot dancing\, too. We hear she is going to perform with a sewing machine in this show! We will likely hear some of the old songs\, the new ones\, and maybe some brand new songs! You will want to be here! See her web site Jenihankins.com \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) You can get them online\, too (for a fee) until Thursday\, October 4 here. SUMMARY:Tannahill Weavers celebrate 50th anniversary!
DESCRIPTION:The Tannahill Weavers first came together in 1968 in Paisley\, Scotland. Current member\, Roy Gullane\, came into the group in 1970 and Phil Smillie\, also a current member\, joined at age 16 a short time after that. They didn’t release their first record until 1976\, but by that time\, they had established the idea that a Highland bagpiper does belong in a Scottish band (they were one of the first to do this)\, and they went on to gain fame\, not only in the British Isles\, but also in Europe and here in North America. John Martin\, the band’s current fiddler\, joined in 1990\, following stints with Ossian and Easy Club. The new guy\, added since their last performance at Caltech in 2014 is Lorne MacDougall\, who was a nominee for Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2012 Scots Trad Music Awards\, on bagpipes. They have produced 17 recordings and in 2011 the band was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. From reflective ballads to footstomping reels and jigs\, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits. The Boston Globe wrote\, “Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers play acoustic instruments\, but the atmosphere at their shows is electric. The quartet is as tight and as versatile as any band in the Celtic music revival. They can summon rock ‘n’ roll intensity or haunting introspection.” It seems to work out that we’ve been able to get them at Caltech every 4 years\, so don’t miss this chance! Their web site is Tannahillweavers.com \nTickets are $25 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Mother's Boys (Peter Feldmann\, Rick Cunha\, David Jackson & David Dawson) : An evening of the music of the Carter Family at Caltech
DESCRIPTION:Mother’s Boys is a relatively new ensemble of four extremely talented veteran musicians who have come together to play some of the great songs of the Carter Family\, the trio from the Clinch Mountain area of Virginia\, who took the world of country music by storm in the late 1920’s\, 1930’s and early 1940’s. Songs like You’ve Been a Friend to Me\, Keep on the Sunny Side\, Will the Circle Be Unbroken\, and many others\, live on today\, and this quartet has done a wonderful job performing some of these songs on last year’s recording\, Home Among the Hills: a Musical Tribute to the Carter Family. The album includes guest appearances by Moira Smiley\, Fred Sokolow\, Susie Glaze\, Laurie Lewis and Aubrey Richmond\, so it is quite a production. We’ll be treated to Mother’s Boys’ fine vocals and harmonies\, plus their most excellent instrumental skills\, with Peter Feldmann on mandolin and guitar\, Rick Cunha on guitar\, David Dawson on autoharp\, and David Jackson on bass. Peter performed at Caltech four years ago with the Very Lonesome Boys\, as well as way back in 1999 along with Richard Greene and Tom Sauber. He is not only a widely known and respected musician and singer\, but he is very knowledgeable historian who has written about old time\, bluegrass\, and folk music in general. We are very happy to welcome him back. Rick Cunha\, a very fine vocalist\, songwriter\, and guitarist\, who has worked with Mason Williams\, the Smothers Brothers\, Emmylou Harris\, and many others\, will be making his Caltech debut. He spends most of his time these days working for others in his recording studio and his appearances are far too scarce. We’re delighted to bring him out of the shadows! David Jackson is an bass player extraordinaire\, and he has worked with Hoyt Axton\, Van Dyke Parks\, John Denver\, Jackson Browne\, and many others. He performed in our series with the group New West\, some years ago. David Dawson met Rick Cunha in Hawaii\, and along with Rick\, formed a folk/rock group\, Hearts and Flowers\, after they both moved to Los Angeles. He left the music world for the art world some years ago\, when he moved to Colorado\, but then released an autoharp album\, Listen\, a few years back. He has also recorded and performed with people like Linda Ronstadt and Jennifer Warrens. These four fine musicians do a fine job of celebrating the music of the Carter Family. Don’t miss the chance to hear them! On weekends and after 6:00 PM\, you may park in spaces that have individual names. Restrictive wording at the structures refers to weekdays before 6:00 PM. There is also parking available on Wilson Avenue itself. Beckman Institute is on the other side of the large lawn on Wilson Avenue\, on the first floor of the left portion of the building. If you get to the fountain and pools that point toward the white\, round\, building (Beckman Auditorium\, which we refer to as “Big Beckman\,” you have gone too far. See this map. Beckman Institute is building #74 and the parking structures are #123 and #124. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. California Boulevard in Pasadena (Southeast corner of Wilson Avenue). Their usual hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. They will be available online as well. SUMMARY:Crary\, Evans & Barnick: Cutting Edge Bluegrass\, Folk\, and Americana Music
DESCRIPTION:Join flatpicking pioneer Dan Crary\, banjo legend Bill Evans\, and Southern California acoustic favorite Wally Barnick as they come together for the first time to perform cutting edge bluegrass\, folk\, and Americana music. These three have all performed for us at Caltech in different groupings over the years\, and we’re excited to have them in such an outstanding line-up together for this show! \nDan Crary is a pioneer of flatpicking guitar solos in a bluegrass band\, right up there with founding fathers Doc Watson\, Clarence White and Norman Blake in carving a role for the flatpick guitar soloist in bluegrass music. A founding member of the Bluegrass Alliance\, and the “newgrass” approach\, his 20+ year collaboration with Byron Berline and John Hickman (as BCH and in the bands Sundance & California) earned him numerous awards and accolades. A veteran of tours in more than thirty countries\, Dan’s a stylist with an international reputation for taste and brilliance. His “racing licks sounded like the fretboard equivalent of Fred Astaire dancing up\, then down a staircase.”
(LA Times). Hear Dan talk about his career\, his new association with Bill and Wally\, and a sampling of his amazing guitar playing here. \nBill Evans is an internationally loved five-string banjo life force. Whether he’s lending his instrumental chops to a blazing fiddle tune or performing one of his original compositions\, Bill is one of contemporary banjo’s treasures. He’s probably the only banjo on earth who has performed with the San Francisco Symphony\, on A Prairie Home Companion and with Dan and Wally! He’s at home with traditional and contemporary bluegrass as well as branching out on the farthest musical limbs that Dan and Wally can take him. \nWally Barnick (bass & vocals) describes himself as “principally a singer who some 40 years ago took up playing bass guitar in order to ensure a place in the band.” That strategy has definitely worked for this wonderful singer and instrumentalist\, who is at home singing and playing everything from folk and bluegrass to Bakersfield country and even some rock and roll. Wally has performed with many familiar California Americana and bluegrass groups in these past four decades\, including the Cache Valley Drifters\, Bluegrass\, Etc.\, and The Hay Dudes. His warm vocals and engaging stage presence are a perfect complement to Dan and Bill’s instrumental fireworks. \nA Crary\, Evans & Barnick show includes new songs and old stories\, blazing instrumental artistry\, and deep-down\, powerfully-felt musical moments. It’s whistling winds in the pines\, rambling boys and tragic girls\, joys and laughter from old times\, furious and foot-tapping instrumental tunes\, and a little touch of glory-to-God. And it’s the hovering ghosts of Jimmie Rogers and The Carter Family and Bill and Lester and Earl and Woody and all the greats who showed the way. \n \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. They will soon be available to be purchased on the phone (we’re setting this up now)\, (626) 395-4652\, with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) Online ticket sales will be available soon. Occasionally\, a show will be sold out before the day of the show\, so call the Ticket Office\, if you are planning to buy tickets at the door. SUMMARY:Bryan Bowers with Geoff Goodhue
DESCRIPTION:Though other talented folks have followed in his footsteps\, Bryan Bowers continues to be the pinnacle of autoharp playing in the folk music world\, and he delivers a fine mix of songs\, instrumentals\, and stories. Bryan will be in California for his annual visit to the California Autoharp Gathering in the Fresno area in May. We heard Bryan at the Fret House in 2017\, and he continues to amaze with plenty of new songs in his repertoire. \nBorn in Yorktown\, Virginia\, Bryan was profoundly affected by the singing of field and railroad workers\, and this style of singing is an important part of his sound. It wasn’t until college that he took up playing the autoharp\, but he quickly became a master of the instrument that he has redefined over the years. He is as important to modern autoharp playing as Earl Scruggs has been to the banjo. In his hands\, the autoharp has amazing capabilities of notes and chords\, and his playing brings to mind a full orchestra\, with its full-bodied and varied sound. \nHe mixes a few original songs with some gospel\, traditional\, and songs of current songwriters\, many of them very funny\, such as “Zen Gospel Singing.” Bryan’s humor\, easy manner\, and natural storytelling abilities make his performances a pure delight. \nWe just got word that Bryan will be touring and performing with Geoff Goodhue\, mandolin player\, now living in New Hampshire. Geoff tours with a group called Beg Steal or Borrow and he has performed with Tim O’Brien and others. \nMore Info: www.bryanbowers.com and Geoff Goodhue \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Claude Bourbon\, Classical/blues guitarist and singer
DESCRIPTION:Claude is making his first appearance in our series. He is a mesmerizing guitarist with a strong background in classical guitar\, along with solid familiarity with blues as well. Claude\, who also sings\, is French\, though he grew up in Switzerland and now lives in the United Kingdom. He has fans on both sides of the Atlantic as a result of his frequent tours of both the United States/Canada and Europe. He plays a Gibson acoustic six string guitar and his repertoire includes bluesy pieces like Gershwin’s Summertime\, as well as classical pieces\, like Ravel’s Boléro \nDave Baily wrote in a review of a show at St. Kyneburgha Church in Peterborough\, England: \n“His fingerpicking is exquisite and if I closed my eyes I could clearly hear two guitars playing. Just when I recongnised a theme he moved on with a mesmerising cascade of notes which kept on flowing. He added a driving bass\, for a version of “She knows how to stretch it”. By the time he sang the first verse he had ‘stretched it’ from Spain to the Caucuses\, and from the concert hall to the bar room. His forte is obviously his wonderful guitar work\, but he does occasionally burst into song and what you then get is something between Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens\, combined with a French accent! C’est magnifique.”. Claude’s web site is www.claudebourbon.org \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“little Beckman”) at 400 South Wilson Avenue. SUMMARY:Singer and songwriter John Gorka at Caltech
DESCRIPTION:The Folk Music Society is very proud to present the extraordinary songwriter and singer\, John Gorka. We’ve been working on getting him here for the last 2-3 years\, and finally our schedules match! John performed in our series early in his career\, showing his talent with songs like Branching Out and over the years he has built a very impressive body of songs that makes this a must-see show. He is originally from New Jersey\, and now lives in Minnesota\, and unfortunately he doesn’t get to Southern California very often. John can be a very funny guy\, almost goofy at times\, but when he sings\, his deep\, resonant voice makes you want to listen closely\, and he has a lot to say. Listen to Let Them In\, based on a poem that was sent to him that he put to music. He generally mixes in a few songs by other songwriters\, and maybe a cover or two of a familiar song\, but it is his original songs that really stand out. He crafts his songs extremely well\, covering a wide variety of subjects\, based on people he has met and things he has seen. Some are fun and humorous\, others have social commentary or tell emotional tales. He moves easily through many genres\, sometimes even mixing them. John is a great listener and observer of the world and he describes it all so well. On top of that he is a very fine guitarist\, and his fingerpicking adds a great deal to the songs. \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) at 400 South Wilson Avenue. On concert night\, free parking is available in the lots at the south end of Michigan Avenue. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. SUMMARY:Scottish group Old Blind Dogs at Caltech
DESCRIPTION:Scotland’s Old Blind Dogs\, from Aberdeenshire\, on Scotland’s northeast coast\, has been one of the most popular acts (two of the shows sold out!) in our series over the years. Consisting of Jonny Hardie\, (fiddle & vocals)\, Aaron Jones (bouzouki\, guitar\, bass\, and vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes\, whistles & guitar)\, and Donald Hay (percussion). Because of some visa issues\, there was a rough patch in the last few years\, as they had to cancel a tour in 2015\, and then in 2016\, it was necessary to have Jenna Moynihan fill in (quite capably!) for founding member\, Jonny\, when his situation couldn’t be settled. We are happy to report that we will have the entire band this time around and they have a brand new recording\, Room with a View out! The band is going strong and they have already made one US tour in 2017\, so everything has been resolved. The Scotsman wrote: “The Old Blind Dogs play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm\, players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion.” Their soaring fiddle playing\, stirring pipes\, and fine singing\, punctuated by extraordinary percussion\, will certainly resonate once again in this small auditorium. Please note that this is one of our rare FRIDAY shows! \n \nTickets are $25 for adults and $5 for children. They are available for purchase at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. They can be ordered by phone (with a service charge) by calling the Ticket Office at (626) 395-4652. Tickets can be purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) Occasionally\, a show will be sold out before the day of the show\, so call the Ticket Office\, if you are planning to buy tickets at the door. Better yet\, join our mailing list and you’ll be informed about such situations ahead of time. You can buy them online (with a service charge) until February 21 by clicking on the button below. \nMore Info: www.oldblinddogs.co.uk \nTickets: $25 / $5 for Caltech students and children.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Peter Yarrow of Peter\, Paul and Mary
DESCRIPTION:It is official! Peter Yarrow is coming to Caltech in February\, 2018! After months of working out a date and other details\, the Folk Music Society will present Peter at 7:00 PM (Note earlier-than-usual start time!) on Saturday\, February 10 in Ramo Auditorium\, just a 4 minute walk from our usual venue\, Beckman Institute Auditorium. Peter has dedicated his life to music and social activism\, and he will share songs and stories of over 50 years of of performing and touring with the group\, Peter\, Paul and Mary\, as well as from being a solo performer and playing in other combinations. During this span\, the trio recorded a tremendous number of fine songs\, including If I had a Hammer and Where Have All the Flowers Gone\, both co-written by Pete Seeger\, Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind\, 500 Miles\, Lemon Tree\, and many others. They also had great success with some of Peter’s own songs\, Puff\, the Magic Dragon\, Day is Done\, The Great Mandala\, and others. They were involved with the Civil Rights movement and Martin Luther King\, as well as the the protest against the Vietnam War. Peter has been active in many other social issues over the years. His stories will remind us of how important music was during these great social changes\, and about how people joining together in song can again be a factor in our current times of turmoil. \nHere is how Peter describes this show:\n“Yes\, it will be nostalgic for many. But on another level\, it will bring them a sense of what is still possible. Yes\, they will sing ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane\,’ and I will give them a sense of the current history of what this music is doing\, and why it’s important. So it will be a history lesson\, it will be a singalong that inspires\, but it will also assert the importance of the continuation of this kind of music in people’s lives today. And where we’re going from here in those terms. It’s not necessarily a big lecture — it’s inherent in the music. They’ll get it. I know it\, ’cause that’s what I do.” \nTickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. )\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) Occasionally\, a show will be sold out before the day of the show\, so call the Ticket Office\, if you are planning to buy tickets at the door. SUMMARY:Jim Malcolm
DESCRIPTION:Jim Malcolm has performed in our series five times and also once or twice when he was a member of Old Blind Dogs. The pattern has been to have him every other year\, but because of a scheduling conflict in 2017\, we’re making up for missing him last January. \nJim continues to be one of Scotland’s finest singers\, accompanying himself on 6-string guitar\, as well as on harmonica. Living Tradition called him “one of the finest singing voices in Scotland in any style\,” and The Scotsman wrote “Jim Malcolm will just melt you in your seat.” \nIn performance\, he splits his time between singing original songs\, many of which end up getting recorded by others\, and he sings songs written or passed down by some of Scotland’s fine writers\, including early ballads from Robert Burns\, Robert Tannahill\, William Soutar\, and his great hero Jim Reid. \nMore Info: www.jimmalcolm.com \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children.

SUMMARY:Adonis Puentes and the Voice of Cuba Orchestra presented by Caltech Public Events! Receive a $5 discount if you mention the Folk Music Society when ordering tickets! Saturday\, January 20 in Beckman Auditorium (Big Beckman) at 8PM
DESCRIPTION:Caltech’s Public Events presents a great evening of Latin dance music\, featuring Cuban-born Adonis Puentes and his Voice of Cuba Orchestra. They both later left Cuba for Canada and went their separate ways. Each has gained considerable fame in the Latin music world. Adonis calls his music “fusion with Cuban roots”. Known as a soñero\, Adonis sings ballads backed by the mix of Spanish guitars with African rhythms peculiar to Cuba. His album\, Sabor a Café was nominated as World Music Album Of The Year at the 2014 Canadian Juno Awards (the Canadian Grammies). The recording consists of Adonis’ original compositions\, and is notable for its sparkling production and dance-happy\, horn-heavy songs. The music is a rhythmic\, modern interpretation of son\, a traditional Cuban style combining elements of Spanish and African music. Join us for this great show in Beckman Auditorium (Big Beckman)! \nTicket prices are $42\, $37\, $32; $10 youth; Caltech/JPL discounts available. SUMMARY:Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands
DESCRIPTION:Laurie is certainly one of the most prominent women of bluegrass today\, with her voice\, guitar\, and fiddle\, but her songwriting and song interpreting sets her apart from the bluegrass world. She can do a great job on Bill Monroe and Carter family songs\, but her originals\, from early ones\, like Texas Bluebonnets to recent compositions\, like Here Today\, prove her to be a substanial songwriter. Fiddler\, Darol Anger\, said of her\, ” Laurie’s strength manifests in many ways: her commanding presence on stage combined with an emotional vulnerability\, the truths in her lyrics\, her physical voice which transcends gender\, her strong commitment to causes and issues in which she deeply believes\, which all resonate with a respect for the land\, the natural world\, and human mercy and justice.” \nThe Right Hands consist of longtime sidekick\, Tom Rozum\, a spectacular mandolinist\, singer\, and guitarist\, Southern California’s own Patrick Sauber on banjo and vocals\, and new members\, Sam Grisman (son of David Grisman) on bass\, and Brandon Godman on fiddle. Laurie always surround herself with the best musicians\, and as they leave the Bay area\, or go on to other projects\, she finds new ones. Their music is a joy to behold and we are always excited to have them back. See Laurie’s web site\, Laurielewis.com. \n \nTickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:The Susie Glaze New Folk Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning vocalist\, Susie Glaze\, mandolinist Steve Rankin\, fiddler Mark Indictor and bassist Fred Sanders are The Susie Glaze New Folk Ensemble\, the newest version of the acclaimed Los Angeles-based Americana group\, a lush new folk Americana fusion ensemble\, presenting gorgeous eclectic blends of mountain folk and exciting new grassy and Celtic-inspired originals\, all with the remarkable voice of Susie Glaze. The group has been likened to the classic British bands Pentangle and Fairport Convention in that they blend classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate\, all with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk! The band has appeared at many premier venues and festivals on the West Coast\, including Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage\, McCabe’s Guitar Shop\, The Broad Stage\, the Hollywood Bowl\, Palms Playhouse\, Don Quixote’s Music Hall\, Kuumbwa Jazz Center and our former selves\, the Caltech Folk Music Society\, among others. The LA Weekly recently named them #3 on their list of best Americana and Country bands in Los Angeles – click here and scroll down just a bit to go straight to their description of the band. Their CD White Swan was released in March of 2013 to critical acclaim from No Depression\, FolkWorks\, Pop Matters\, M Magazine for Musicians\, Music News Nashville and FolkWords UK among others\, and charted in the Top 50 on the Roots Music Report’s Combined Internet and Terrestrial Folk Chart. Their new album Not That Kind of Girl produced by Herb Pedersen was released in June 2015 and is enjoying critical acclaim and radio airplay around the country. “If there were a word to describe this fine band\, it would be sophisticated. They draw influences from disparate sources to meld their sound. The level of musicianship is exemplary.… display a great range of prowess and work as a tight unit.” — Bluegrass Unlimited. “…one of the finest and most original Americana groups in California (or in the country for that matter).” No Depression. Augmenting their sound is the lush\, Celtic sounds of Rankin’s bouzouki\, the mountain sounds of Susie’s Appalachian dulcimer and traditional autoharp\, with Mark Indictor’s virtuoso fiddling and Fred Sanders’ remarkable bass work rounding out the orchestral nature of this amazing ensemble. Joining the group for this show at Caltech will be their original songwriter and lead guitarist\, original founding member of the Hilonesome Band\, Rob Carlson. Visit their web site at www.susieglaze.com \nSusie Glaze has been honored to be included on the newly-released Compass Records tribute album Dear Jean – Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie alongside such artists as Judy Collins\, Pete Seeger\, Janis Ian\, Tim O’Brien\, John McCutcheon\, Robin and Linda Williams and many more. Copies of this CD will be available at this show. \n“The band is tight\, great picking\, and beautiful vocals and harmony.” KVMR\, Nevada City\, CA\n“She held the audience in the palm of her hand….” Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival\n“…does something with a song that only great singers can do…” KCSN\, Northridge\, CA\n“One of the most beautiful voices in bluegrass and folk music today.” KPFK’s FolkScene\n“…with people like this to trust\, my music will go on living\, and soaring. And so will I.” Jean Ritchie \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) at 400 South Wilson Avenue. On concert night\, free parking is available in the lots at the south end of Michigan Avenue. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. SUMMARY:Susan McKeown- Concert posponed!! We hope to announce a new date soon. Please check back.
DESCRIPTION:Susan McKeown (pronounced “mick-yone”) has been called “the most strikingly original woman singer in the Celtic music vein” by The Christian Science Monitor. She has performed and recorded with Johnny Cunningham (Silly Wizard\, Celtic Fiddle Festival\,) John Doyle\, Eileen Ivers\, Natalie Merchant\, Solas’ Seamus Egan and many others. She was born in Dublin\, Ireland\, but came to the U.S in 1990 to study opera\, but she soon gravitated to other music styles\, eventually settling into folk and traditional music of her Irish heritage. Rhythm Music wrote\, “McKeown comes on like a force of nature: a tide of incantory verse and a voice that slays demons. . . there’s a stateliness in her delivery that suggests she’s in midnight communion with the long-departed spirit of Sandy Denny.” Come hear this engaging vocalist as she makes her debut at Caltech! \nTickets will be available soon and we are setting this up now. Once everything is in place\, they can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Rosalie Sorrels Memorial
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Folk Music Society is co-sponsoring a memorial for Rosalie Sorrels with some of her friends and family on Sunday\, August 20 at 7:00 PM in our familiar Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman.) Rosalie\, a terrific singer\, songwriter\, musician and storyteller passed away on June 11 and this will be a chance for friends\, a few family members\, and the many who knew her from her songs and performances to remember how special she was. We are very proud that we featured her three times at Caltech. The event will be free\, and though it will feature some music\, it will\, in the tradition of Rosalie\, feature many stories and memories as well. Mark the calendar! \nFor those unfamiliar with Caltech\, Beckman Institute is actually located at 400 South Wilson Avenue in Pasadena. While there may be limited street parking\, there are parking lots located at the southern stub of Michigan Avenue (one block east of Wilson)\, below Del Mar Boulevard. Beckman Institute is located west of the distinctive large white wedding cake Beckman Auditorium (NOT part of Beckman Institute)\, easily seen from Michigan Avenue. A series of pools (fountains at times) points toward Beckman Institute\, and the auditorium is located on the first floor. The auditorium holds just under 200 people\, and we don’t know how many folks to expect for the memorial\, so we recommend arriving a bit early. \nWe will provide further information in the coming days. If you have questions\, send a message to \nInfo@pasadenafolkmusicsociety.org

SUMMARY:Phil Salazar and the Kin Folk
DESCRIPTION:Phil Salazar has been one of the mainstays in Southern California bluegrass for a good many years. He has pulled bluegrass in many directions and he has played in many memorable configurations during this time. One of these groupings began as the Phil Salazar Band back in 1983. This is such an amazing grouping and they have now become more of a full time band. You can count on a great show. Kin Folk includes Phil on fiddle and guitar\, Tom Corbett (who also plays in many other configurations) on mandolin and guitar\, Bill Knopf\, the longtime great banjo player\, Charl Ann Gastineau\, the fantastic other half of the “twin fiddles\,” and Rick Borella\, their longtime rock solid bass player\, along with their newest member Bill Flores\, yet another high-demand\, busy musician\, on dobro\, accordion and guitar. Phil\, Bill\, and Tom all sing lead and backing vocals\, so we’ll all have a great time together. They have released recordings over the years\, including a few when they morphed into The Acousticats for a few years with Cyrus Clarke. They play in the style of bluegrass\, but draw from a wealth of genres including folk\, rock\, traditional American\, cajun\, Irish\, jazz\, country\, and cowboy. Their performances together have been infrequent\, so don’t miss this show! SUMMARY:Jim Kweskin and friends
DESCRIPTION:Jim Kweskin’s name has long been associated with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band\, which defined an important niche in popular music\, showcasing traditional\, jugband\, and ragtime music in an era (the 1960’s) when more and more musicians were writing their own songs.  This band reached back and made music from the past shine. The band spawned the careers of Geoff and Maria Muldaur\, and following the break-up of the Jug Band after 5 years\, Jim later formed another group\, the U and I band. Jim has played solo\, as well as with a host of other musicians\, including a reunion of the Jug Band a few years ago.  His most recent recording\, Penny’s Farm\, teams him up with Geoff Muldaur and has received great reviews.   He created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival\, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Blind Boy Fuller to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. He has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days\, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist.  In live performance\, he has a warm and easy going manner and his fine guitar playing and singing are a delight.  Jim will be joined by Benny Brydern on fiddle and Marquis Howell on bass. This will be a great show!
