DESCRIPTION:After performing with Pasadena Folk Music Society for more than twenty years\, both with Old Blind Dogs and solo\, Jim is extremely fond of our organization and the wonderful spirit of our audiences\, and he’s delighted to be coming back. \nAs both singer and songwriter\, Jim Malcolm is one of the most distinctive voices in Scottish music\, “one of the finest singing voices in Scotland in any style”. In 2004\, Jim was songwriter of the year in the Scots Trad Music Awards\, and he has been nominated three times for Scots Singer of the Year. SUMMARY:On Sale: Irish Traditional Musicians Nuala Kennedy and Eamon O'Leary on April 25
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be at Knox Presbyterian Chuch\, details and tickets can be found here!  \nNuala’s concert tour is sponsored by Culture Ireland. \nWorld renowned as a traditional singer and flute player\, Nuala Kennedy is known for her creative reworking and reimagining of traditional songs and for her unique Irish flute style\, formed in Dundalk and honed in her long-time adopted home of Edinburgh\, Scotland. \nShe is a musical adventurer who is recognized world-wide as a superlative performer of traditional music. Nuala joined Irish-American Supergroup SOLAS as singer for their 30th Anniversary Reunion in 2025. She has graced the cover of Irish Music Magazine\, Sing Out! and appeared on the mainstage at festivals and venues around the world including Rudolstadt (GER)\, Celtic Connections (UK)\, Milwaukee Irish festival (USA)\, Telemark (NOR)\, Eurofonik (FRA)\, National Folk Festival (AU) and Celtic Colors (CAN). \n“Cheeky\, dynamic and full of ideas.” —Scotland on Sunday \n“A flute player and composer of remarkable finesse\, fearless of the unknown.” —The Irish Times \nHer newest release ‘Hydra’ (August 2024) is an atmospheric duo album of songs recorded with Eamon O’ Leary. \n‘Sumptous folk songs’  – Folk Album of the Month\, The Guardian \n \nNuala and Eamon share a life-long interest in collecting lesser-known ancient ballads and breathing new life into them\, re-working and re-imagining them for audiences today. Their melodies are hypnotic and wandering… much as the musicians themselves. They have honed their craft in tandem over decades of touring every conceivable type of venue; from Carnegie Hall and huge folk festivals\, to a hand hewn village hall north of the Arctic Circle. \nEamon O’Leary\, from Dublin\, is a long time resident of New York City. A singer and string player\, with deep roots in the world of Irish trad\, he is one half of The Murphy Beds with Jefferson Hamer. Their debut album was described by The Hufffington Post as one that “bears repeated listening from start to finish\, with ten beautiful\, crystalline songs.” He is also a member of The Alt with Nuala Kennedy and John Doyle. His songwriting can be heard\, most recently\, on The Silver Sun from Reveal Records.

SUMMARY:On Sale: Inspired by Maritime Traditions\, Kalos Joins Us on May 9th
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be at Knox Presbyterian Chuch. Tickets are on sale on Eventbrite. Prices are $33.85 (incl. fee) for advance tickets\, $35 at the door.  Caltech students and youth through high school are $12.51 (incl. fee) in advance or $10 at the door.  \nKalos is drawn to water. Every performance is like stepping into a river—they never play a song the same way twice. They make music inspired by the maritime traditions of Scotland\, Ireland\, Scandinavia and North America. Their album titles—Harbour and Headland—honor the meeting point between the land and sea and they sing songs about shorelines\, seafarers and drownings. They revel in the driving danceability of Irish tunes\, but also take inspiration from the pastoral melodies and naturalistic metaphors of Scottish music. But while the music they write is forged in tradition\, it is nonetheless cast and tempered in new and unexpected ways. \nKalos is an ancient Greek word that means “beautiful” or “praiseworthy” and the root of the English words “calligraphy” and “calisthenics.” Like a fine calligrapher or adept gymnast\, each musician possesses a profound attention to detail and form. But within the exquisite architecture of their compositions\, they remain inventive—finding new flourishes and discovering unseen ley lines in the fertile ground of traditional music. \n “There’s a spontaneity at work as the three musicians alternately contest and duel\, combine and coalesce to bring their talents together.”…Folk Worlds magazine \nThe trio includes musicians you will surely know from their work with Ensemble Galilei and The Syncopaths. \nRyan McKasson (fiddle\, viola\, background vocals) has gained a strong reputation as a performer\, composer\,collaborator and teacher. In 1996 he became the youngest ever winner of the US National Scottish Fiddle Championship. In 1997 he was awarded a Merit Scholarship for Viola Performance from the University of Southern California. Over the years Ryan has recorded with a number of influential artists including Scottish fiddle champion Hanneke Cassel’s albums Silver (2006)\, For Reasons Unseen (2009)\, and Dot the Dragon’s Eyes (2013)\, as well as Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas’s recording Highlander’s Farewell (2011). \nEric MacDonald (guitar\, mandolin\, lead vocals) is now established as one of the USA’s premier accompanists in many styles. He is an active session player\, regularly recording and traveling with musicians of many stripes. In addition to guitar accompaniment\, Eric’s debut solo album Rove features his unique style and approach to tunes on the mandolin\, as well as carefully crafted deliveries of traditional ballads on voice and guitar. \nJeremiah McLane (accordion\, piano\, background vocals) has spent several decades traveling in Europe\, doing field research that laid the groundwork for a Master’s degree from the New England Conservatory. Jeremiah has recorded over a dozen CDs with Nightingale\, the Clayfoot Strutters\, Bob & the Trubadors\, Le Bon Vent\, and Ruthie Dornfeld. \n \n \nArtist Social Media\n\nWebsite: https://kalosband.com/\nBandcamp: https://kalosband.bandcamp.com/\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/DPjZb5gkb5y/\nSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0CioUOzMbjFqtlaTcj1Dcn\nApple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/kalos/1684012230\n\nFirst Notice of Our Events. SUMMARY:On Sale: Bluegrass with Laurie Lewis and Nina Gerber on June 6!
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be at Knox Presbyterian Chuch. Tickets are on sale on Eventbrite. Prices\, with fees\, are $39.19 for adults and $12.51 for Caltech students and youth through high school. Tickets at the door will be $40 and $10.  \nLaurie Lews is a multi-award winning American bluegrass singer\, musician\, and songwriter. She’ll be joined by Nina Gerber\, a favored accompanist to some of folk music’s most revered singer-songwriters. \n \n“To ask how Laurie Lewis’s music is relevant in this day and age\, in the broader folk\, Americana\, and bluegrass scenes as a whole\, would be similar to asking how a brick in a home’s foundation is relevant to its structure. Her influence\, her reach and her artistic intent are quiet stalwarts on which so much has been built.” Justin Hiltner\, Bluegrass Situation \n\nFor nearly four decades\, Laurie Lewis has gathered fans and honors for her powerful and emotive voice and her versatile\, dynamic songwriting. She is a sought-after recording producer and an equally skilled teacher and mentor. \n\nWhile steeped in the bluegrass tradition\, Laurie’s songwriting demonstrates her ability to surpass the limitations of that genre. Her works reflect her wide range of influences: from old time and country to Tin Pan Alley\, jazz standards and early rock ‘n roll. A recent project\, and Laurie Lewis\, is a series of duets with old friends (Kathy Kallick\, Tom Rozum\, Craig Smith\, Mike Marshall\, Nina Gerber\, Barbara Higbie\, and Todd Phillips)\, and the newest generation of acoustic standouts (Molly Tuttle\, Leah Wollenberg and Tatiana Hargreaves).

SUMMARY:On Sale: Scottish Folksinger Iona Fyfe Joins Us Jul 11th
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be at Knox Presbyterian Chuch. Tickets are on sale on Eventbrite. Including fees\, advanced tickets are $33.85 for adults and $12.51 for Caltech students and youth through. Tickets at the door will be $35 and $10. \nAberdeenshire folksinger\, Iona Fyfe\, has become one of Scotland’s finest singers\, rooted deeply in the singing traditions of the North East of Scotland. In 2021\, she became the first singer to win the coveted title of Musician of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards. A two-time winner of Scots Singer of the Year\, Iona has performed across Europe\, the US\, Canada and Australia. \nGrowing up within the Traditional Music and Song Association movement\, Iona met many revivalist singers such as Jimmie Hutchison\, Joe Aitken and Carole Prior who influenced her ballad and bothy ballad style. Attending singarounds\, ceilidhs and competitions from 5 years of age\, Iona learnt her repertoire mainly through oral transmission and is still a regular within the competitive ballad circuit. \n \nIona is a fierce advocate for the official recognition of the Scots Language\, leading a successful campaign to pressure Spotify into recognising Scots and add it to its list of languages. Honoured at the Scots Language Awards with the title of Speaker of the Year in 2021\, Iona performs both folk and pop songs in the Scots language\, remaining true to her rooting in tradition. Iona has featured in several publications including The Sunday Post\, The Financial Times\, The Wall Street Journal and The Times. She won the title of Scots Singer of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards in 2018 and was described as “one of the best Scotland has to offer.” \nWhile waiting for the concert\, enjoy Iona’s music at: \n\nYouTube: ionafyfe\nSpotify: https://spoti.fi/36PlU2e\nBandcamp: www.ionafyfe.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Save Oct 3rd for Singer-songwriter Sarah McQuaid
DESCRIPTION:Sarah McQuaid’s lush\, velvety voice combines with her engaging personality and “brilliant musicianship” (fRoots) on acoustic and electric guitars\, keyboards and (occasionally) drum to create a truly immersive experience. Her live performances are full of warmth\, wit\, and intimacy\, and have earned her loyal followings on both sides of the Atlantic. \nBorn in Spain\, raised in Chicago\, holding dual Irish and American citizenship and now settled in rural England\, she brings the eclecticism of her background to her “captivating\, unorthodox songwriting” (PopMatters) and choice of material. From contemplative ballads to playful blues to atmospheric instrumentals\, Sarah’s music invites reflection\, connection\, and a deep appreciation of the quiet power of a well-crafted song. \nIn April 2017\, Sarah was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Newtownards\, Northern Ireland (previous recipients include legendary guitarists Davey Graham\, John Renbourn\, John Martyn\, Martin Simpson\, Pierre Bensusan and Martin Carthy) in recognition of her innovative use of DADGAD tuning and her authorship of the Irish DADGAD Guitar Book. Presenting the award\, Ernie McMillen of Avalon Guitars said “It is rare in the guitar world to find a player who displays genius without arrogance\, and who shares their hard-won skill and knowledge so selflessly. I get to see many specialist guitarists up close\, and many over-perform. It’s honey for the soul to witness Sarah McQuaid perform.” \n \nDetails are being finalized so stay tuned for event location and pricing. DESCRIPTION:The Tannahill Weavers are one of Scotland’s premier traditional bands – now in their 57th year\, their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals and songs\, original ballads and lullabies\, and humorous tales of life in Scotland. Their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. In 2011 the band was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame\, and in 2018 they released their highly acclaimed 50th Anniversary album Òrach (“Golden” in Gaelic) on award-winning label Compass Records. \nTheir most recent release\, Solstice\, has won high praises even from sources outside the usual folk scene. \n \nDetails are being finalized\, so stay tuned!
