SUMMARY:Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands
DESCRIPTION:Laurie is certainly one of the most prominent women of bluegrass today\, with her voice\, guitar\, and fiddle\, but her songwriting and song interpreting sets her apart from the bluegrass world. She can do a great job on Bill Monroe and Carter family songs\, but her originals\, from early ones\, like Texas Bluebonnets to recent compositions\, like Here Today\, prove her to be a substanial songwriter. Fiddler\, Darol Anger\, said of her\, ” Laurie’s strength manifests in many ways: her commanding presence on stage combined with an emotional vulnerability\, the truths in her lyrics\, her physical voice which transcends gender\, her strong commitment to causes and issues in which she deeply believes\, which all resonate with a respect for the land\, the natural world\, and human mercy and justice.” \nThe Right Hands consist of longtime sidekick\, Tom Rozum\, a spectacular mandolinist\, singer\, and guitarist\, Southern California’s own Patrick Sauber on banjo and vocals\, and new members\, Sam Grisman (son of David Grisman) on bass\, and Brandon Godman on fiddle. Laurie always surround herself with the best musicians\, and as they leave the Bay area\, or go on to other projects\, she finds new ones. Their music is a joy to behold and we are always excited to have them back. See Laurie’s web site\, Laurielewis.com. \n \nTickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) Occasionally\, a show will be sold out before the day of the show\, so call the Ticket Office\, if you are planning to buy tickets at the door. Better yet\, join our mailing list and you’ll be informed about such situations ahead of time.

SUMMARY:The Susie Glaze New Folk Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning vocalist\, Susie Glaze\, mandolinist Steve Rankin\, fiddler Mark Indictor and bassist Fred Sanders are The Susie Glaze New Folk Ensemble\, the newest version of the acclaimed Los Angeles-based Americana group\, a lush new folk Americana fusion ensemble\, presenting gorgeous eclectic blends of mountain folk and exciting new grassy and Celtic-inspired originals\, all with the remarkable voice of Susie Glaze. The group has been likened to the classic British bands Pentangle and Fairport Convention in that they blend classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate\, all with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk! The band has appeared at many premier venues and festivals on the West Coast\, including Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage\, McCabe’s Guitar Shop\, The Broad Stage\, the Hollywood Bowl\, Palms Playhouse\, Don Quixote’s Music Hall\, Kuumbwa Jazz Center and our former selves\, the Caltech Folk Music Society\, among others. The LA Weekly recently named them #3 on their list of best Americana and Country bands in Los Angeles – click here and scroll down just a bit to go straight to their description of the band. Their CD White Swan was released in March of 2013 to critical acclaim from No Depression\, FolkWorks\, Pop Matters\, M Magazine for Musicians\, Music News Nashville and FolkWords UK among others\, and charted in the Top 50 on the Roots Music Report’s Combined Internet and Terrestrial Folk Chart. Their new album Not That Kind of Girl produced by Herb Pedersen was released in June 2015 and is enjoying critical acclaim and radio airplay around the country. “If there were a word to describe this fine band\, it would be sophisticated. They draw influences from disparate sources to meld their sound. The level of musicianship is exemplary.… display a great range of prowess and work as a tight unit.” — Bluegrass Unlimited. “…one of the finest and most original Americana groups in California (or in the country for that matter).” No Depression. Augmenting their sound is the lush\, Celtic sounds of Rankin’s bouzouki\, the mountain sounds of Susie’s Appalachian dulcimer and traditional autoharp\, with Mark Indictor’s virtuoso fiddling and Fred Sanders’ remarkable bass work rounding out the orchestral nature of this amazing ensemble. Joining the group for this show at Caltech will be their original songwriter and lead guitarist\, original founding member of the Hilonesome Band\, Rob Carlson. Visit their web site at www.susieglaze.com \nSusie Glaze has been honored to be included on the newly-released Compass Records tribute album Dear Jean – Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie alongside such artists as Judy Collins\, Pete Seeger\, Janis Ian\, Tim O’Brien\, John McCutcheon\, Robin and Linda Williams and many more. Copies of this CD will be available at this show. \n“The band is tight\, great picking\, and beautiful vocals and harmony.” KVMR\, Nevada City\, CA\n“She held the audience in the palm of her hand….” Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival\n“…does something with a song that only great singers can do…” KCSN\, Northridge\, CA\n“One of the most beautiful voices in bluegrass and folk music today.” KPFK’s FolkScene\n“…with people like this to trust\, my music will go on living\, and soaring. And so will I.” Jean Ritchie \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) at 400 South Wilson Avenue. On concert night\, free parking is available in the lots at the south end of Michigan Avenue. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children and Caltech students. They will be available soon at the Caltech Ticket Office by calling (626) 395-4652 and at the Caltech Ticket Office in their new location at 1200 E. California Boulevard in Pasadena (Southeast corner of Wilson Avenue). Their usual hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. There is limited short term parking in front of the Spaulding building on California and to the side on Wilson. Otherwise\, you can find street parking nearby. Online tickets are now available- click on “Purchase Tickets” below. There is a fee for phone orders and for online tickets\, while purchases at the Ticket Office are free. Tickets can also be purchased (without additional fee) at the door of the venue one half hour before the show\, but it is always wise to call the Ticket Office a day or two before a show to ensure they are not close to a sold out show. We hate to have to turn people away\, which occasionally happens!

SUMMARY:Susan McKeown- Concert posponed!! We hope to announce a new date soon. Please check back.
DESCRIPTION:Susan McKeown (pronounced “mick-yone”) has been called “the most strikingly original woman singer in the Celtic music vein” by The Christian Science Monitor. She has performed and recorded with Johnny Cunningham (Silly Wizard\, Celtic Fiddle Festival\,) John Doyle\, Eileen Ivers\, Natalie Merchant\, Solas’ Seamus Egan and many others. She was born in Dublin\, Ireland\, but came to the U.S in 1990 to study opera\, but she soon gravitated to other music styles\, eventually settling into folk and traditional music of her Irish heritage. Rhythm Music wrote\, “McKeown comes on like a force of nature: a tide of incantory verse and a voice that slays demons. . . there’s a stateliness in her delivery that suggests she’s in midnight communion with the long-departed spirit of Sandy Denny.” Come hear this engaging vocalist as she makes her debut at Caltech! \nTickets will be available soon and we are setting this up now. Once everything is in place\, they can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Rosalie Sorrels Memorial
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Folk Music Society is co-sponsoring a memorial for Rosalie Sorrels with some of her friends and family on Sunday\, August 20 at 7:00 PM in our familiar Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman.) Rosalie\, a terrific singer\, songwriter\, musician and storyteller passed away on June 11 and this will be a chance for friends\, a few family members\, and the many who knew her from her songs and performances to remember how special she was. We are very proud that we featured her three times at Caltech. The event will be free\, and though it will feature some music\, it will\, in the tradition of Rosalie\, feature many stories and memories as well. Mark the calendar! \nFor those unfamiliar with Caltech\, Beckman Institute is actually located at 400 South Wilson Avenue in Pasadena. While there may be limited street parking\, there are parking lots located at the southern stub of Michigan Avenue (one block east of Wilson)\, below Del Mar Boulevard. Beckman Institute is located west of the distinctive large white wedding cake Beckman Auditorium (NOT part of Beckman Institute)\, easily seen from Michigan Avenue. A series of pools (fountains at times) points toward Beckman Institute\, and the auditorium is located on the first floor. The auditorium holds just under 200 people\, and we don’t know how many folks to expect for the memorial\, so we recommend arriving a bit early. \nWe will provide further information in the coming days. If you have questions\, send a message to \nInfo@pasadenafolkmusicsociety.org

SUMMARY:Phil Salazar and the Kin Folk
DESCRIPTION:Phil Salazar has been one of the mainstays in Southern California bluegrass for a good many years. He has pulled bluegrass in many directions and he has played in many memorable configurations during this time. One of these groupings began as the Phil Salazar Band back in 1983. This is such an amazing grouping and they have now become more of a full time band. You can count on a great show. Kin Folk includes Phil on fiddle and guitar\, Tom Corbett (who also plays in many other configurations) on mandolin and guitar\, Bill Knopf\, the longtime great banjo player\, Charl Ann Gastineau\, the fantastic other half of the “twin fiddles\,” and Rick Borella\, their longtime rock solid bass player\, along with their newest member Bill Flores\, yet another high-demand\, busy musician\, on dobro\, accordion and guitar. Phil\, Bill\, and Tom all sing lead and backing vocals\, so we’ll all have a great time together. They have released recordings over the years\, including a few when they morphed into The Acousticats for a few years with Cyrus Clarke. They play in the style of bluegrass\, but draw from a wealth of genres including folk\, rock\, traditional American\, cajun\, Irish\, jazz\, country\, and cowboy. Their performances together have been infrequent\, so don’t miss this show! Find out a bit more about them at pskfband.com. \nTickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office in the Spalding Building (California Blvd. and Wilson Avenue) for face value (open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. )\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Jim Kweskin and friends
DESCRIPTION:Jim Kweskin’s name has long been associated with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band\, which defined an important niche in popular music\, showcasing traditional\, jugband\, and ragtime music in an era (the 1960’s) when more and more musicians were writing their own songs.  This band reached back and made music from the past shine. The band spawned the careers of Geoff and Maria Muldaur\, and following the break-up of the Jug Band after 5 years\, Jim later formed another group\, the U and I band. Jim has played solo\, as well as with a host of other musicians\, including a reunion of the Jug Band a few years ago.  His most recent recording\, Penny’s Farm\, teams him up with Geoff Muldaur and has received great reviews.   He created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival\, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Blind Boy Fuller to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. He has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days\, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist.  In live performance\, he has a warm and easy going manner and his fine guitar playing and singing are a delight.  Jim will be joined by Benny Brydern on fiddle and Marquis Howell on bass. This will be a great show! His web site www.jimkweskin.com. \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) and tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. SUMMARY:Ben Miller and Anita MacDonald
DESCRIPTION:Ben Miller and Anita MacDonald will be making their first appearance at Caltech in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman.) They have been playing together for about four years\, blending the rich traditional sound of the Cape Breton fiddle\, with the fiery edge of the Scottish Border pipes. Combining their creative vision with influences from Old and New World Gaelic traditions\, they create a powerful sound\, heralded as “one of the most important folk acts on the Island [Cape Breton] today.” (Wendy Bergfeldt-Munro\, Producer/Host CBC). \nTempering the sharp edge of the pipes and fiddle\, Ben and Anita will be joined by an acoustic guitarist and they will share thesound that has captivated audiences across North America and beyond. \nA cocktail of tradition\, distilled like a pure drop of the Canadian Maritimes\, their unique blend of driving dance music transcends boundaries – equally at home at a kitchen ceilidh or on a late night festival stage. “… Fiery\, fresh\, yet totally traditional.” (Alex Monaghan\, Piping Today Magazine). Ben and Anita will definitely get your feet moving! \nTickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children. You can buy them after Thursday\, March 28 by calling the Caltech Ticket Office at (626) 395-4652. SUMMARY:Michael Smith\, extraordinary songwriter\, singer\, guitarist to appear at Caltech Saturday\, March 11

Over the years\, he’s recorded a tremendous body of memorable songs\, and he continues to be prolific. SUMMARY:The Revelers
DESCRIPTION:We’ve got a real Southern band\, a Louisiana band\, coming to Caltech for this show. They are so big in size (6 members)\, stature\, and anticipated audience size that we’re moving over to Ramo Auditorium\, a short walk beyond our usual digs in Beckman Institute Auditorium. The Revelers consists of most of the members of the revered Red Stick Ramblers\, including Blake Miller\, also founding member of the Pine Leaf Boys. This powerhouse Louisiana roots band embraces and bends the boundaries of Cajun\, country\, zydeco\, swamp-pop\, and the blues\, adding a good dose of their own originals. They have toured the United States and Europe and they are clearly ready for Pasadena. They were the featured musicians for the third and fourth seasons of HBO’s Tremé\, and that show’s music supervisor\, Blake Leyh\, wrote about their recent recording\, \n“Cultural renaissance? Smultural renaissance! If this record doesn’t make get up and dance\, then you must be physically handicapped. If it doesn’t teach you something about life\, then you must certainly be very wise already. And if it does not\, at any point\, bring a tear to your eye? Then you must have either a malfunctioning tear duct or a heart of stone. \nWhipsmart songwriting\, outrageous musical chops\, and cutting-edge production have made this record a fixture on my stereo. I cannot stop listening to it. It’s not easy to create something brand-new and forward thinking which also lives smack-dab in the middle of history and acknowledges its roots. But The Revelers have done all that and more. I give this my highest possible recommendation.” \nDon’t miss the opportunity to hear band live and in person. \nTickets: $25 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Brad Colerick
DESCRIPTION:Brad Colerick has been an important factor for the Los Angeles area songwriters and performers. You might be familiar with his music series in South Pasadena\, where he presented\, performed with\, and learned from many other fine songwriters and musicians as his own world view and voice continuted to evolve. His songwriting is personal\, his guitar provides a solid accompaniment and he has a very fine voice. Terry Boland wrote the following for No Depression: \n“When singer-songwriter\, Brad Colerick moved to Los Angeles from Nebraska he carried with him the heart of the country in a town that wasn’t known for its affection for country music. But it the songs came as natural to him as the flow of a wild midwestern river. He began in his youth with a pure love for the music\, writing his own unique folk-country songs that reflected his surrounding landscape in stories and melodies to match his inner visions. He has always written big sky songs that mined deeply into the heart. This is the clearest signature of his critically acclaimed 2014 release\, Tucson. His songs are heart sketches\, traces of longing\, of love lost and found\, redeamened in the art of song.” \nBrad will will be joined by two other musicians\, Guillermo Guzman on bass and Tim Fleming on Pedal steel guitar. Hear Brad sing his song\, This is what I do. Don’t miss his debut with the Pasadena Folk Music Society! The show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) and tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. SUMMARY:Witcher\, Recupido & Levitt
DESCRIPTION:Witcher\, Recupido & Levitt perform a very satisfying country tinged style of bluegrass music. \nThis band evolved from the Witcher Brothers\, who were long one of the mainstays of Southern California bluegrass. Appearances became less frequent as two of the Witcher sons struck out on their own\, with young fiddler extraordinaire Gabe Witcher moving east and forming the Punch Brothers with Chris Thile\, and Michael Witcher becoming a much in demand dobro player and instructor gone to the Bay area. The singing and songwriting nucleus of the Witcher Brothers\, Dennis Witcher (mandolin) and Tony Recupido (guitar) had been wanting to perform together again and it was the addition of banjo player (and banjo luthier!)\, Dan Levitt that got them out performing again with wonderful results! Another Witcher son\, Loren performed with them over the last year\, beginning with their fundraiser performance for our friend Pitt Kinsolving\, but he recently has had to leave the band\, so they will be joined by a new bass player. \nWe are very proud to welcome these guys to our series and we hope to bring some of their old fans and lots of new ones together for a delightful evening of music. They don’t have a web site or new recording yet\, but you can sample them at that fundraiser show at the Coffee Gallery below. \n \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Chris Proctor
DESCRIPTION:An inventive guitarist\, now living in Salt Lake City\, Chris Proctor has 11 fine albums to his credit. Chris is a musical adventurer whose voice is the acoustic six and the twelve string guitars. His music takes listeners through a fascinating world of moods and textures. His influences include traditional American folk\, Celtic\, blues and classical\, but his style is all his own. The music always maintains a strong sense of melody as he combines rich textures and flawless playing. In live performance\, Chris has the opportunity to describe how each of the pieces came to be composed or arranged. If you are a guitarist\, you will be amazed at what he does\, and there are always some in the audience who come to watch and learn from this master of the 6 and 12 string guitars. \nOne reviewer wrote\, “What to call his unique melange of styles? There’s an aspect of Americana in the echoes of Appalachian and old-timey styles that are apparent in just about every track\, but there are also elements of jazz\, Celtic folk\, and a dash of blues in here somewhere. What Proctor does is create guitar music that reflects the whole heritage of the instrument and still has his own distinct stamp\, a tall order\, but he’s up to the job.” \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) and tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Tickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office at the Winnett Student Center for face value (Generally open Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Sarah McQuaid
DESCRIPTION:Born in Spain\, raised in Chicago and now living in rural England\, Sarah refuses to be pigeonholed\, segueing easily from one of her emotive originals into a 1930s Cuban jazz number\, a 16th century lute piece or an unexpected contemporary cover. Like its predecessors\, her fourth solo CD has drawn international critical acclaim: The Musician (UK) called it “A work that grows with each listen\,” while Germany’s Folker hailed it as “Ein mutiges Album mit einem potenziellen Pophit” (A courageous album that includes a potential pop hit). “Sending out a trembling resonance\, this is a collection of songs that feel their way into your being\,” wrote FolkWords (UK)\, where it was selected as Album of the Month and nominated for both Best Album from a Female Artist and Album of the Year. The Folk Music Society has been trying to get her into our schedule for years\, and we’re happy that her debut is coming up soon! \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) and tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. SUMMARY:Dan Frechette and Laurel Thomsen
DESCRIPTION:Dan Frechette\, guitar/vocals\, and Laurel Thomsen\, violin/vocals will be making their Caltech debut at this show. We are happy to be presenting this fine duo who we expect you will be hearing much more about in the future. They prove that musical magic is not only possible\, but as described by The Monterey Herald\, “a match made in heaven”. Lyrically refreshing and musically diverse\, over the past three years this Canadian-American duo has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada\, releasing two albums of their diverse and uplifting original material. Dan and Laurel take to the stage with exuberance\, and as a concert reviewer in Tappen\, British Columbia wrote\, with “their energy\, winsome personalities\, and toe tapping rhythms\, keep audiences engaged with every song”. \nDan is from Canada and he’s written hundreds of songs\, with some having been recorded by others\, including popular versions of The Mists of Down Below and You Don’t See It recorded by the Duhks. Laurel is an American genre-bending violinist\, composer\, and respected educator who also writes songs and is doing more and more singing. They are working on their third recording together\, so we’re looking forward to hearing their new material. Hear and see them sing Dan’s song\, The Mists of Down Below\, from Grass Valley last year when they opened for the Wailing Jennys\, and check out Little Bird\, below. Visit their web site. \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) and tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Tickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office at the Winnett Student Center for face value (Generally open Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Sunday Morning Bluegrass Gospel in the Garden!
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Folk Music Society moves off the Caltech campus for the first time ever to present a special Sunday morning concert featuring the fine voices and guitar work of Eric Uglum and Bud Bierhaus\, also known as the Vintage Martins. Eric and Bud impressed us greatly some years back when they performed at one of our shows as part of a fine bluegrass group\, Copperline\, known for wonderful harmonies. The group broke up shortly after that show and Eric and Bud have played music separately in other configurations since then. In the last year\, they have been making a few appearances at festivals and now they have a brand new recording. Their harmonies and instrumental skills are better than ever- click here to hear them. Bud won the Texas State Flatpicking Guitar Championship in 2012 and he has performed with Herb Pedersen\, Chris Hillman and others. Eric has performed and recorded with Alison Krauss\, James King\, Stuart Duncan\, Ron Block\, Rob Ickes and others\, as well as raising a couple of sons who are making it in the music world in Nashville. Check out their web page at http://www.thevintagemartins.com \nSome of us at the Folk Music Society have yearned for and dreamed of an outdoor morning bluegrass gospel set\, something that is pretty common at bluegrass festivals\, but we didn’t want to plan a whole festival. Why bluegrass gospel? Those harmonies are just so pure and earnest. If you don’t know this sound\, you’d better come take it in. Why in the morning? While this won’t be a religious show per se\, and there won’t be a sermon\, the Sunday morning will bring us all closer to the roots of this music. They will be singing both traditional songs and original compositions. \nWhen we found out that Eric and Bud would be in Southern California over the weekend for a bluegrass festival down near San Diego\, we started hunting for a venue around Pasadena\, and realized that Arlington Garden\, a long block south of Huntington Hospital\, in Southwest Pasadena\, would be a great place for such a show. This land was the site of a 50 room mansion secluded off the old Millionaire’s Row\, South Orange Grove Boulevard\, until the home was razed and the land became slated to be part of the controversial Long Beach Freeway. It stood as a neglected vacant lot for 40 years\, until some imaginative and hard working volunteers began to plant trees and transform the property into a lush drought-tolerant native plant demonstration garden and a delightful place to spend a few hours. Those who whiz by on Pasadena Avenue don’t realize the beauty they are passing\, unless they turn west on Arlington Drive and get out of the car and walk a bit. The garden is free and open to the public 7 days a week from dawn to dusk. The property now consists of many separate garden areas and this show will be in the olive allee\, past the Italian pots\, Spanish Lavender olive trees and a busy birdbath. Find out more about the garden at http://www.arlingtongardeninpasadena.org. Come take in the music and the garden! \n \nThe show starts at 9AM. Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Tickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office at the Winnett Student Center for face value (Generally open Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM) or\, supply permitting\, at the garden on the morning of the show for cash (sorry\, no credit cards at the garden.) Be aware that the garden does not have built in restrooms\, but there will be a porta-potty available. It will be necessary to walk up a few steps and guests will need to be able to navigate walking on gravel and decomposed granite walkways. The garden does not have a parking lot\, but there will be street parking on Arlington Drive between Pasadena Avenue and South Orange Grove Boulevard\, and above and below Arlington drive on Orange Grove Boulevard (parking is permitted on Sunday mornings). Note that parking is NOT permitted on Pasadena Avenue. Carpooling is encouraged! The address of the garden is 275 Arlington Drive\, Pasadena\, CA 91105.

SUMMARY:Patrick Ball: Celtic Harp and Story
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back Patrick Ball\, who has honored our series by appearing 7 times before\, with completely different shows and different musical configurations\, combining elements of music\, storytelling\, theater and literature. Patrick is an extraordinary steel string Celtic harpist and an equally talented storyteller. In an article entitled\, An Irish Bard Plucks at Heartstrings the San Franciso Chronicle wrote\,\n“… whenever performer Patrick Ball pulls his stool up to the harp\, streams of silvery tunes glisten and shimmer. It’s instant Irish nostalgia\, even for a listener who has no particular connection to the country and its culture…Ball plays the pedalless Celtic harp with a deft\, florid touch. The melodies are lovingly shaped and the intricate finger work gracefully phrased.” \nWhether he is acting out a scene\, telling a story\, performing solo or with others\, Patrick has always turned in a stellar performance here at Caltech. His words connect with the audience\, and the moods he creates with the harp are breath-taking. He is a master interpreter of the legendary Irish harper\, Turlough O’Carolan in particular. Don’t miss this chance to be swept away by this master storyteller as he transports you to other lands and he treats you to an evening of achingly beautiful harp music. \n \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children \nTickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office at the Winnett Student Center for face value (Generally open Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Kevin Burke
DESCRIPTION:It has been over four years since Kevin Burke has played at Caltech\, and we’re honored and delighted to have the return of this fiddler extraordinaire. \nIn a 30-plus year career\, Kevin has played with the Bothy Band\, Patrick Street\, Open House\, the Celtic Fiddle Festival\, and in many other combinations. As fine as he is with these various accompanists\, it is sheer pleasure to hear him with his “naked fiddle\,” as he calls it. \nThe New York Times describes Kevin as “a superior instrumentalist in any idiom……impressively virtuosic.” The Washington Post writes of his “lyrical style that is always emotionally electric\,” and the Irish Times says that “Burke’s fiddling is one of the high spots of the current Irish musical scene.” \nAlong with his wonderful music\, he’s a thoroughly charming man and this promises to be a delightful evening! \n \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Jayme Stone's Lomax Project
DESCRIPTION:We are very proud to present this fine group of musicians exploring the deep roots music of North America. Jayme Stone is a Canadian banjo innovator\, known for his bringing together diverse music\, be it Bach or from Africa. His range is tremendous and his knowledge of the music insures that it will be an authentic rendering. Focusing on songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax\, this collaboratory brings together some of North America’s most distinctive and creative roots musicians to revive\, recycle and re-imagine traditional music. The repertoire includes Bahamian sea chanties\, African-American acappella singing from the Georgia Sea Islands\, ancient Appalachian ballads\, fiddle tunes and work songs collected from both well-known musicians and everyday folk: sea captains\, cowhands\, fishermen\, prisoners and homemakers. Collaborators vary on different tours\, and at this point we know that Moira Smiley\, who will be familiar to many in our audience\, will be among those joining the Project at Caltech. Other performers who have participated include Grammy-winning singer Tim O’Brien\, Bruce Molsky\, Margaret Glaspy\, Moira Smiley\, Brittany Haas\, Julian Lage\, Eli West\, and more. They have released a recording on Borealis Records. \nLearn more on Jayme Stone’s website. \n \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:John McCutcheon
DESCRIPTION:John is one of the most requested performers for us\, and there are a number of reasons. He is a fine songwriter and songfinder\, one of the very best! Consider such original songs as Christmas in the Trenches and Water from Another Time\, or songs by others\, such as the great alternate birthday song\, Tina Liza Jones’ Cut the Cake\, or Si Kahn’s Gone\, Gonna Rise Again. Traditional songs are important in his repertoire\, and Step by Step and How Can I Keep from Singing are just a couple of examples. He has a storehouse of great songs\, and always some new ones. John is an amazing musician\, equally talented on guitar\, hammered dulcimer\, banjo\, piano\, autoharp\, fiddle and other instruments. He is a very fine singer\, both in his children’s & family concerts\, and his shows for adults\, like this one. For many\, it is his dedication to social justice and ability to articulate in words and music a world that strives for justice and harmony. His concerts are fun and you always get a chance or two to sing along. If you have heard John before\, we suspect you are marking your calendar now\, and if you haven’t heard him\, we strongly recommend that you come hear him at his best\, in live performance. \nMore info: http://www.folkmusic.com \n \nTickets: $25 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen
DESCRIPTION:Steve and Cindy have consistently brought us great music in their every-other-year visits. \nSteve made a big splash very early in his career when he wrote the song “Darcy Farrow” which was recorded by Ian and Sylvia at the height of their time together. The song—so timeless that it is thought by many to be an old traditional song—was later recorded by such performers as John Denver and Nanci Griffith. Steve has gone on to write many songs that have been recorded by other folks\, such as Kenny Rogers\, Waylon Jennings\, Tammy Wynette\, Linda Ronstadt\, Towns Van Zandt\, and Jerry Jeff Walker. He’s a songwriter’s songwriter\, and still excels at it. \nCindy Mangsen plays guitar\, concertina\, and banjo and is known for her beautiful voice. Early in her career\, she gained a reputation for her fine interpretations of haunting songs from Francis Child’s collection of Scottish and English ballads\, with their American variants. Cindy has an amazing and diverse set of skills. \nSteve and Cindy each have a knack for finding great songs\, both by other songwriters and traditional songs as well\, and their harmonies are outstanding. But it is Steve and Cindy’s sound together and their rapport with an audience that makes them so compelling. \nMore Info: www.compassrosemusic.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children
