SUMMARY:Rita Hosking
DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Rita Hosking\, from Northern California\, returns for her second appearance at Caltech. She continues to gain attention for her original songs and her personable style. \nShe was winner of Best Country Album (Vox Pop) in the 2010 Independent Music Awards\, winner of the ’08 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest at the Sisters Folk Festival\, finalist in the 2009 Telluride Troubadour Contest\, and has other credits as well. \nShe may remind you of Kate Wolf and Gillian Welch\, but she is very much her own performer. She proves that you can have genuine rural folk music from California (she was raised in Shasta County)\, and she’s written lots of fine songs from that setting. See her web site\, ritahosking.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Sarah McQuaid
DESCRIPTION:Born in Spain\, raised in Chicago and now living in rural England\, Sarah refuses to be pigeonholed\, segueing easily from one of her emotive originals into a 1930s Cuban jazz number\, a 16th century lute piece or an unexpected contemporary cover. Like its predecessors\, her fourth solo CD has drawn international critical acclaim: The Musician (UK) called it “A work that grows with each listen\,” while Germany’s Folker hailed it as “Ein mutiges Album mit einem potenziellen Pophit” (A courageous album that includes a potential pop hit). “Sending out a trembling resonance\, this is a collection of songs that feel their way into your being\,” wrote FolkWords (UK)\, where it was selected as Album of the Month and nominated for both Best Album from a Female Artist and Album of the Year. The Folk Music Society has been trying to get her into our schedule for years\, and we’re happy that her debut is coming up soon! \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) and tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Tickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office at the Winnett Student Center for face value (Generally open Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) Occasionally\, a show will be sold out before the day of the show\, so call the Ticket Office\, if you are planning to buy tickets at the door. SUMMARY:Dan Frechette and Laurel Thomsen
DESCRIPTION:Dan Frechette\, guitar/vocals\, and Laurel Thomsen\, violin/vocals will be making their Caltech debut at this show. We are happy to be presenting this fine duo who we expect you will be hearing much more about in the future. They prove that musical magic is not only possible\, but as described by The Monterey Herald\, “a match made in heaven”. Lyrically refreshing and musically diverse\, over the past three years this Canadian-American duo has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada\, releasing two albums of their diverse and uplifting original material. Dan and Laurel take to the stage with exuberance\, and as a concert reviewer in Tappen\, British Columbia wrote\, with “their energy\, winsome personalities\, and toe tapping rhythms\, keep audiences engaged with every song”. \nDan is from Canada and he’s written hundreds of songs\, with some having been recorded by others\, including popular versions of The Mists of Down Below and You Don’t See It recorded by the Duhks. Laurel is an American genre-bending violinist\, composer\, and respected educator who also writes songs and is doing more and more singing. They are working on their third recording together\, so we’re looking forward to hearing their new material. Hear and see them sing Dan’s song\, The Mists of Down Below\, from Grass Valley last year when they opened for the Wailing Jennys\, and check out Little Bird\, below. Visit their web site. \n \nThe show will be in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) and tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Tickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office at the Winnett Student Center for face value (Generally open Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Sunday Morning Bluegrass Gospel in the Garden!
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Folk Music Society moves off the Caltech campus for the first time ever to present a special Sunday morning concert featuring the fine voices and guitar work of Eric Uglum and Bud Bierhaus\, also known as the Vintage Martins. Eric and Bud impressed us greatly some years back when they performed at one of our shows as part of a fine bluegrass group\, Copperline\, known for wonderful harmonies. The group broke up shortly after that show and Eric and Bud have played music separately in other configurations since then. In the last year\, they have been making a few appearances at festivals and now they have a brand new recording. Their harmonies and instrumental skills are better than ever- click here to hear them. Bud won the Texas State Flatpicking Guitar Championship in 2012 and he has performed with Herb Pedersen\, Chris Hillman and others. Eric has performed and recorded with Alison Krauss\, James King\, Stuart Duncan\, Ron Block\, Rob Ickes and others\, as well as raising a couple of sons who are making it in the music world in Nashville. Check out their web page at http://www.thevintagemartins.com \nSome of us at the Folk Music Society have yearned for and dreamed of an outdoor morning bluegrass gospel set\, something that is pretty common at bluegrass festivals\, but we didn’t want to plan a whole festival. Why bluegrass gospel? Those harmonies are just so pure and earnest. If you don’t know this sound\, you’d better come take it in. Why in the morning? While this won’t be a religious show per se\, and there won’t be a sermon\, the Sunday morning will bring us all closer to the roots of this music. They will be singing both traditional songs and original compositions. \nWhen we found out that Eric and Bud would be in Southern California over the weekend for a bluegrass festival down near San Diego\, we started hunting for a venue around Pasadena\, and realized that Arlington Garden\, a long block south of Huntington Hospital\, in Southwest Pasadena\, would be a great place for such a show. This land was the site of a 50 room mansion secluded off the old Millionaire’s Row\, South Orange Grove Boulevard\, until the home was razed and the land became slated to be part of the controversial Long Beach Freeway. It stood as a neglected vacant lot for 40 years\, until some imaginative and hard working volunteers began to plant trees and transform the property into a lush drought-tolerant native plant demonstration garden and a delightful place to spend a few hours. Those who whiz by on Pasadena Avenue don’t realize the beauty they are passing\, unless they turn west on Arlington Drive and get out of the car and walk a bit. The garden is free and open to the public 7 days a week from dawn to dusk. The property now consists of many separate garden areas and this show will be in the olive allee\, past the Italian pots\, Spanish Lavender olive trees and a busy birdbath. Find out more about the garden at http://www.arlingtongardeninpasadena.org. Come take in the music and the garden! \n \nThe show starts at 9AM. Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Tickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office at the Winnett Student Center for face value (Generally open Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM) or\, supply permitting\, at the garden on the morning of the show for cash (sorry\, no credit cards at the garden.) Be aware that the garden does not have built in restrooms\, but there will be a porta-potty available. It will be necessary to walk up a few steps and guests will need to be able to navigate walking on gravel and decomposed granite walkways. The garden does not have a parking lot\, but there will be street parking on Arlington Drive between Pasadena Avenue and South Orange Grove Boulevard\, and above and below Arlington drive on Orange Grove Boulevard (parking is permitted on Sunday mornings). Note that parking is NOT permitted on Pasadena Avenue. Carpooling is encouraged! The address of the garden is 275 Arlington Drive\, Pasadena\, CA 91105.

SUMMARY:Patrick Ball: Celtic Harp and Story
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back Patrick Ball\, who has honored our series by appearing 7 times before\, with completely different shows and different musical configurations\, combining elements of music\, storytelling\, theater and literature. Patrick is an extraordinary steel string Celtic harpist and an equally talented storyteller. In an article entitled\, An Irish Bard Plucks at Heartstrings the San Franciso Chronicle wrote\,\n“… whenever performer Patrick Ball pulls his stool up to the harp\, streams of silvery tunes glisten and shimmer. It’s instant Irish nostalgia\, even for a listener who has no particular connection to the country and its culture…Ball plays the pedalless Celtic harp with a deft\, florid touch. The melodies are lovingly shaped and the intricate finger work gracefully phrased.” \nWhether he is acting out a scene\, telling a story\, performing solo or with others\, Patrick has always turned in a stellar performance here at Caltech. His words connect with the audience\, and the moods he creates with the harp are breath-taking. He is a master interpreter of the legendary Irish harper\, Turlough O’Carolan in particular. Don’t miss this chance to be swept away by this master storyteller as he transports you to other lands and he treats you to an evening of achingly beautiful harp music. \n \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children \nTickets can be purchased on the phone (626-395-4652) with a credit card (a service charge will be added per order)\, purchased at the Caltech Public Events Ticket Office at the Winnett Student Center for face value (Generally open Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM)\, purchased online (click on red ticket below- service charge added per ticket\, sales end 2 days before show)\, or purchased at the door for cash or check (no credit cards.) SUMMARY:Kevin Burke
DESCRIPTION:It has been over four years since Kevin Burke has played at Caltech\, and we’re honored and delighted to have the return of this fiddler extraordinaire. \nIn a 30-plus year career\, Kevin has played with the Bothy Band\, Patrick Street\, Open House\, the Celtic Fiddle Festival\, and in many other combinations. As fine as he is with these various accompanists\, it is sheer pleasure to hear him with his “naked fiddle\,” as he calls it. \nThe New York Times describes Kevin as “a superior instrumentalist in any idiom……impressively virtuosic.” The Washington Post writes of his “lyrical style that is always emotionally electric\,” and the Irish Times says that “Burke’s fiddling is one of the high spots of the current Irish musical scene.” \nAlong with his wonderful music\, he’s a thoroughly charming man and this promises to be a delightful evening! \n \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Andrea Beaton and Dick Hensold
DESCRIPTION:(Note: This show was originally scheduled for January 16\, 2016.) \nDon’t miss this special pairing! This promises to be an exciting evening of fiddle and pipes! \nOne of Cape Breton’s most promising young fiddlers\, Andrea Beaton comes by her music honestly. Listen to her play\, the power of her bow\, the drive and swing of her timing\, the crispness of her attack. She’s making a name for herself in dance halls\, concerts\, ceilidhs\, and festivals. Like the compelling tradition she represents\, her reputation is growing\, spreading beyond the island. Andrea Beaton seems destined for great things. She comes from a family of fine musicians\, including her cousin Natalie MacMaster\, and her uncle\, the famed Cape Breton fiddler Buddy MacMaster. She is also a composer and a music teacher at music camps and festivals \nDick Hensold is the leading Northumbrian smallpiper in North America. For the past 20 years\, he has performed and taught in England\, Scotland\, Japan\, Canada\, and across the United States. Based in St. Paul\, Minnesota\, he is a full-time musician\, passionately presenting the traditional music of Scotland\, Cape Breton Island\, and Northumberland\, as well as Nordic folk music\, early music\, and traditional Cambodian music. SUMMARY:Jayme Stone's Lomax Project
DESCRIPTION:We are very proud to present this fine group of musicians exploring the deep roots music of North America. Jayme Stone is a Canadian banjo innovator\, known for his bringing together diverse music\, be it Bach or from Africa. His range is tremendous and his knowledge of the music insures that it will be an authentic rendering. Focusing on songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax\, this collaboratory brings together some of North America’s most distinctive and creative roots musicians to revive\, recycle and re-imagine traditional music. The repertoire includes Bahamian sea chanties\, African-American acappella singing from the Georgia Sea Islands\, ancient Appalachian ballads\, fiddle tunes and work songs collected from both well-known musicians and everyday folk: sea captains\, cowhands\, fishermen\, prisoners and homemakers. Collaborators vary on different tours\, and at this point we know that Moira Smiley\, who will be familiar to many in our audience\, will be among those joining the Project at Caltech. Other performers who have participated include Grammy-winning singer Tim O’Brien\, Bruce Molsky\, Margaret Glaspy\, Moira Smiley\, Brittany Haas\, Julian Lage\, Eli West\, and more. They have released a recording on Borealis Records. \nLearn more on Jayme Stone’s website. \n \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:John McCutcheon
DESCRIPTION:John is one of the most requested performers for us\, and there are a number of reasons. He is a fine songwriter and songfinder\, one of the very best! Consider such original songs as Christmas in the Trenches and Water from Another Time\, or songs by others\, such as the great alternate birthday song\, Tina Liza Jones’ Cut the Cake\, or Si Kahn’s Gone\, Gonna Rise Again. Traditional songs are important in his repertoire\, and Step by Step and How Can I Keep from Singing are just a couple of examples. He has a storehouse of great songs\, and always some new ones. John is an amazing musician\, equally talented on guitar\, hammered dulcimer\, banjo\, piano\, autoharp\, fiddle and other instruments. He is a very fine singer\, both in his children’s & family concerts\, and his shows for adults\, like this one. For many\, it is his dedication to social justice and ability to articulate in words and music a world that strives for justice and harmony. His concerts are fun and you always get a chance or two to sing along. If you have heard John before\, we suspect you are marking your calendar now\, and if you haven’t heard him\, we strongly recommend that you come hear him at his best\, in live performance. \nMore info: http://www.folkmusic.com \n \nTickets: $25 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen
DESCRIPTION:Steve and Cindy have consistently brought us great music in their every-other-year visits. \nSteve made a big splash very early in his career when he wrote the song “Darcy Farrow” which was recorded by Ian and Sylvia at the height of their time together. The song—so timeless that it is thought by many to be an old traditional song—was later recorded by such performers as John Denver and Nanci Griffith. Steve has gone on to write many songs that have been recorded by other folks\, such as Kenny Rogers\, Waylon Jennings\, Tammy Wynette\, Linda Ronstadt\, Towns Van Zandt\, and Jerry Jeff Walker. He’s a songwriter’s songwriter\, and still excels at it. \nCindy Mangsen plays guitar\, concertina\, and banjo and is known for her beautiful voice. Early in her career\, she gained a reputation for her fine interpretations of haunting songs from Francis Child’s collection of Scottish and English ballads\, with their American variants. Cindy has an amazing and diverse set of skills. \nSteve and Cindy each have a knack for finding great songs\, both by other songwriters and traditional songs as well\, and their harmonies are outstanding. But it is Steve and Cindy’s sound together and their rapport with an audience that makes them so compelling. \nMore Info: www.compassrosemusic.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Old Blind Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Jenna Moynahan-fiddle and vocals\nSix years have slipped by since we had Scotland’s Old Blind Dogs in our series. After years of trying\, including an aborted show last year when the U.S. State Department delayed their visas and we had to cancel a show\, we have arranged the return of this fine Scottish band that features a blend of fine instrumental and vocal talents in their playing of traditional and original music. Old Blind Dogs\, from Aberdeenshire\, on Scotland’s northeast coast\, consists of Aaron Jones (bouzouki\, guitar\, bass\, and vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes\, whistles & guitar)\, and new member\, Donald Hay (percussion). Unfortunately\, in late January\, we got word that longtime member\, Jonny Hardie would not be able to make the trip\, once again\, for unexplained immigration problems. But the band is used to dealing with such problems\, and they were quickly able to convince Jenna Moynahan to join them for this tour. She is a great Celtic fiddler from Boston\, and she will add vocals and a few songs from her solo career. See her web site here Over the years Old Blind Dogs has evolved and grown into one of Scotland’s favorite folk bands\, being named Folk Band of the Year at the 2007 Scots Trad Music Awards. Their soaring fiddle playing\, stirring pipes\, and fine singing\, punctuated by African percussion\, will certainly resonate in this small auditorium. \nThe Old Blind Dogs play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm\, players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion. SUMMARY:Beppe Gambetta
DESCRIPTION:Beppe Gambetta is a guitar virtuoso\, and the Italian roots of the word (skill\, excellence) are certainly fitting when talking about him. Born in Italy\, Gambetta is recognized the world over as a master innovator of the acoustic guitar. \nAs a boy he heard a band playing on a train and became obsessed with the guitar. Completely self-taught\, he studied the techniques—at a note-by-note level—of both the European and the American guitar\, developing his own original style in the process. \nThis dynamic solo performer tours Europe\, Canada\, the United States\, and Australia\, endlessly rediscovering\, teaching\, and promoting flatpicking. \n“Get him on a stage and his fingers speak a language all their own. After all\, he’s not known as the ‘Italian King of the flatpick guitar’ for nothing.” – Steve Wildsmith\, The Daily Times \n“A Spanish odissey\, a mazurka learned from a 78rpm record\, slips into this repertoire\, just as tunes like these have been slipping into American culture since.” – Rob Adams\, The Herald \n“His incredible versatility combined with his charm and engaging stage presence make Beppe’s concerts evenings of high quality music and relaxed entertainment. Over-riding all else\, however\, is the brilliance of his talent…” – Cornish Guardian \n“…spinning a thick weave that sometimes calls to mind what a duet by Doc Watson and Leo Kottke might sound like.” – Mike Joyce\, The Washington Post \nMore Info: www.beppegambetta.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Mark O'Connor's "An Appalachian Christmas"
DESCRIPTION:This show is presented by Caltech Public Events\, with the Folk Music Society as marketing partner \nCall it violin or call it fiddle\, Mark O’Connor is without a doubt one of the giants of our time on this instrument. He is also an outstanding mandolin and guitar player\, as well. He is as comfortable with jamming at a country hoedown as he is with composing a classical concerto\, and he has performed and recorded with Dolly Parton\, James Taylor\, Paul Simon\, Randy Travis\, the Judds\, Chet Atkins\, and Tony Rice\, just to mention a very few of his long list of credits. The Los Angeles Times noted that Mark has “crossed over so many boundaries\, that his style is purely personal.” Although he is so versatile\, he clearly has one of his feet (He has many feet!) planted in the traditional folk realm. He is an immensely in-demand session musician and has performed on some 500-plus recordings. He has won 2 Grammy Awards and been nominated 6 other times. In 2010\, Mark organized a recording\, An Appalachian Christmas which features Mark\, joined by Renee Fleming\, Alison Krauss\, Steve Wariner\, Jane Monheit\, and James Taylor on vocals\, Sharon Isbin on guitar\, Yo-Yo Ma on cello\, Edgar Meyer on bass\, and Chris Thile on mandolin. The music was so popular\, that Mark has made a touring show each December\, bringing this music across the country. It will be different musicians on this tour\, and we don’t know the names of the performers at this time\, but knowing Mark’s integrity\, they will all be masters. We are delighted and honored that Mark will be performing in Pasadena at Beckman Auditorium\, “Big Beckman\,” just east of Beckman Institute Auditorium\, where the Folk Music Society has its shows. See Mark’s web site here. Ticket prices are: $45; $40; $35 • $10 for youth. All seats are reserved. Mention the Folk Music Society and you get a $5 discount on tickets\, both in advance and at the door on the night of the concert!

SUMMARY:Laurie Lewis and Kathy Kallick
DESCRIPTION:Laurie Lewis\nLaurie Lewis and Kathy Kallick were founding members of a group called the Good Old Persons\, a seminal California bluegrass band that included some amazing musicians who have gone on to achieve a great deal. It turns out that they had influences themselves\, and for Laurie and Kathy\, the musicians who taught them the most were Vern Williams and Ray Park\, who started performing back in the 1950’s. \nKathy Kallick\nLaurie and Kathy have gone on to lead bluegrass bands of their own\, and they are certainly leaving their own stamp on California bluegrass and bluegrass as a whole. They have remained close friends over the years\, and last year\, they decided to collect some of their favorite songs that Vern and Ray had introduced them to. The result was the album\, Laurie and Kathy Sing the Songs of Vern & Ray. The recording is quite a departure for these two\, who are known as gifted songwriters\, because none of the songs on the new recording are their own. But those wonderful vocals are present as always\, as well as their great guitar playing and Laurie’s fiddling. And the songs\, a mix of traditionals\, Ray Park originals\, and songs by people like the Carter Family and Stephen Foster\, make up a very fine repertoire. \nThey will be joined in concert by Laurie’s longtime partner\, Tom Rozum on mandolin\, and her banjo player from the Right Hands\, Patrick Sauber. They will also be joined by Cary Black\, who is a current member of the Kathy Kallick Band and a former member of Laurie’s group on stand-up bass. This will be a very rare opportunity to hear Laurie and Kathy together\, not to mention this outstanding quintet\, so mark your calendar now. \nMore Info: www.laurielewis.com and www.kathykallick.com \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:The Good Lovelies
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Caltech Public Events\, with the Folk Music Society as marketing partner \nThe Good Lovelies are one of Canada’s premier folk bands. Funny and upbeat\, with just a pinch of sass\, their  textbook three-part harmonies\, constant instrument swapping\, and witty stage banter have enlivened the folk music landscape since they joined forces in 2006. \nThe Lovelies (Caroline Brooks\, Kerri Ough\, and Sue Passmore) were friends first when they decided to take the leap from their day jobs and head out on the road making music across Canada…and it shows. Their tireless rain or shine outlook and undeniable mutual respect have helped the trio weather years of constant touring. \n“(They) make three-part harmonies divinely—all sun\, serotonin\, and retro-radio.”\n– Globe & Mail  \nMore Info: www.goodlovelies.com \nTickets: All seats are reserved. SUMMARY:Claudia Russell and Bruce Kaplan
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to welcome another pair of newcomers to our series: Claudia Russell and her partner\, Bruce Kaplan\, from Berkeley\, California. She’s a second generation musician whose father—Gilbert Russell aka Val Rosing—was a famous singer in the 1930s\, best known for being the vocalist on the original BBC recording of “A Teddy Bear’s Picnic.” Claudia is an evocative singer and guitarist who connects with her audience through her very fine original songs. She is joined by her partner Bruce Kaplan\, who sings and plays mandolin and guitar. \nPaul Zollo of American Songwriter wrote about Claudia’s most recent recording: \n“All Our Luck Is Changing is a masterpiece! Though everything Claudia’s done solo or with others has been great\, sparked by the singular charm of her sweet voice and pure spirit\, this is the best yet. With Peter Case at the helm and a new batch of beautifully realized songs\, this is everything that is great about her and more. Her singing has never been more poignant or confident\, and these songs come to life with an effortless spirit of genuine soul. This is heartwarming stuff\, both inspirational and comforting at a time we need inspiration and comfort more then ever.” \nThis show will be a perfect chance to hear this couple in an intimate environment. Listen to them do the title tune from Claudia’s newest CD below: \n \nMore Info: www.claudiarussell.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Kathy Kallick Band
DESCRIPTION:The Kathy Kallick Band is one of California’s finest bluegrass bands\, and they soar both vocally and instrumentally. They are known both for honoring the music of some of the towering influences on early bluegrass (Bill Monroe\, the Louvin Brothers\, and many more)\, and for adding plenty of wonderful original songs and tunes to the cannon. \nKathy Kallick’s wonderful\, distinctive vocals have been praised by many reviewers\, such as Kevin Russell\, who called her voice\, “part country\, part bluegrass\, part something entirely her own. She simply has one of the most convincing and emotionally expressive voices in bluegrass music today.” She is also a tremendous songwriter and a fine guitarist\, to boot. She is surrounded by some outstanding pickers and singers: Annie Staninec on fiddle and clawhammer banjo\, Tom Bekeny\, mandolin\, fiddle\, Greg Booth\, dobro and banjo\, and Cary Black on acoustic bass. \nThe Folk Music Society has been aware of the Kathy Kallick Band for quite some time\, and there have been efforts to get them down here in our series (they are from the Bay area)\, but scheduling a show has always proved difficult. We are delighted to finally present them in our series and we have no doubt that you will like them as much as we do and as much as Wayne Bledsoe\, of Bluegrass Saturday Night at KMST (Rolla\, MO). Wayne wrote the following about their latest recording\, Time: \nKathy Kallick’s latest release\, Time\, could have very well been titled “Timeless\,” as that describes the inherent appeal of the fourteen tracks selected for the recording. Her rendition of classics by Bill Monroe\, The Delmore Brothers\, Arthur Smith\, and Vern and Ray contains a musical respect for the past that will please the most demanding traditionalist\, yet each tune is embossed with a pleasing aural presentation that is totally contemporary. Although Kathy’s homage to the past is highly commendable\, it’s actually her four originals (“Time\,” “Fare Thee Well\,” “Bird\,” and “Lulu and Jack”) that push Time into the “Timeless” zone. Each of the songs penned by Kathy contains the seeds from which classics of the future are grown. Time is pure “Kallick Magic” and recommended for all discriminating music lovers. \nMore Info: www.kathykallick.com \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:John Flynn
DESCRIPTION:John Flynn had already released his first ten or so albums before he got around to approaching us to do a show. One reason was that he had taken time out from touring to raise children\, but he was still creating and performing. Kris Kristofferson wrote some of his liner notes. He accompanied Arlo Guthrie\, Willie Nelson and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott on the “Train to New Orleans” tour after Hurricane Katrina\, at Arlo’s request. \nHe’s a songwriter’s songwriter\, and his songs are not the kind of self-absorbed songs that Arlo Guthrie once described as being in “the key of me.” No\, John Flynn isn’t afraid to sing about bigger things\, ranging from a century of Woody Guthrie to the courage of a young girl in Afghanistan. When two of our concert series board heard John at a showcase event last fall\, the only question was “How soon can we present him to our audience?” The time is now\, and if you listen to music for the lyrics\, then this is the show you should make sure to attend. Here is what some others have said: \n“John Flynn is one of a special breed of good-hearted artists whose reaction to the human condition finds kind\, humorous expression. God bless them.” — Kris Kristofferson \n“More than just a good songwriter\, performer\, or guitar player\, John Flynn is a friend because he actually does the kinds of things to help make the world a little better that other people write\, sing and play about.” — Arlo Guthrie \n“John Flynn is saying what many of us are thinking as we watch the evening news. Sadly\, few others are these days. Listen.” — Michael Braunfeld\, Tune Up \n“A philosopher with a guitar…” — acousticmusic.com \n“John Flynn is at the near end of a long line of American poets\, thinkers and folk artists stretching from Henry David Thoreau\, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman\, all the way up to Kris Kristofferson.” — Ticket Magazine \n“Someone with a very loud voice needs to climb a very tall building and yell this artist’s praises. It is criminal that most of the fans of the genre haven’t heard of him on the same level as Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Shawn Colvin and John Gorka.” — Indiana Online \nMore Info: www.johnflynn.net \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Marina V and Aireene Espiritu
DESCRIPTION:Save the date for this special double bill! \nMarina V is a talented singer-songwriter with an unusual back story. She grew up in Moscow and was trained as a classical pianist. Then she was exposed to English-language pop music through cassette tapes smuggled into Russia. She spent a year in the U.S. as an exchange student in high school and decided she really wanted to leave Russia for the west\, to become a songwriter. She emigrated here\, met and eventually married Nick Baker\, her musical partner\, and has been a musician here ever since. \nThe Los Angeles Times called Marina’s music “hauntingly beautiful” and the Prague Post said she has “the voice of an angel.” Keyboard Magazine called her “one of the most promising new singer/songwriters” Describing her own musical influences\, Marina says\, “If the Beatles and Tori Amos had a child raised in Russia by Tchaikovsky\, that would be me.” Marina plays mostly keyboards\, along with a bit of guitar\, and she will be joined by her husband\, Nick Baker\, on guitar. \nAireene Espiritu was born in the Philippines\, but grew up here\, influenced by the music of both lands\, especially the Filipino finger-style guitar playing of her family\, and the Alan Lomax song collections of the American south. Thus her music\, featuring guitar and ukulele\, has tinges of gospel\, blues and traditional folk music\, but almost all of the songs she performs are original\, including her reply to one of the Lomax songs. When asked to describe her music\, she called it “Stompin’ Swayin’ Americana.” That’s a fair description\, as you can hear a melting pot of musical influences from East\, West and South. Most musicians would be hard-pressed to use the tenor uke as a blues instrument\, but for Aireene\, it works. She will be joined by Edward Tree on guitar\, a man who is also known for his songwriting. \nManos Demetris\, of WCBN in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, wrote aboutAireene: \n“For a small woman\, Aireene’s full voice packs a wallop. She was born in the Philippines and came to the States when she was 10. Her simple accompaniment is a Martin tenor ukelele\, having a pure sound with few high-frequency harmonics. This is folk music with strong Southern connections\, and Aireene (pronounced like “Irene”) sings without country affectations. All songs are originals except the traditional “Oh Come\, Angel Band.” Aireene visited WCBN on 11/5/2011 for an interview and live performance. Her vocals can be playful one minute\, and plaintive the next. When she finished the last notes of “Oh Come\, Angel Band\,” every eye in the studio was moist\, including mine. These are charming songs from a charming young artist.” \nMore Info: www.marinav.com and www.aireeneespiritu.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band
DESCRIPTION:Susie Glaze & The Highlonesome Band are coming back for a fourth appearance at Caltech! They have been likened to the classic British bands Pentangle and Fairport Convention in that they blend classic folk music with rough-edged stories of tragedy and fate\, all with orchestral arrangements sounding like chamber music gone folk! A lush newgrass Americana folk fusion quintet presenting gorgeous eclectic blends of mountain folk and exciting new grassy and Celtic-inspired originals\, all with the remarkable voice of Susie Glaze. Their most recent studio CD White Swanwas released in March of 2013 to critical acclaim from  No Depression\, FolkWorks\, Pop Matters\, M Magazine for Musicians\, Music News Nashville and FolkWords UK among others\, and it has been charting in the Top 50 on the Roots Music Report’s Combined Internet and Terrestrial Folk Chart since it’s release in March of 2013. Susie Glaze has been honored to be included on the newly-released Compass Records tribute album Dear Jean – Artists Celebrate Jean Ritchie alongside such artists as Judy Collins\, Pete Seeger\, Janis Ian\, Tim O’Brien\, John McCutcheon\, Robin and Linda Williams and many more. \nThey have a brand new recording coming out this spring\, Not That Kind of Girl\, that is produced by Herb Pedersen (Loafer’s Glory\, Dillards\, and many other great bluegrass projects) and features Herb and Chris Hillman (former member of the Byrds\, Flying Buritto Brothers among other groupings) on one track. They will undoubtedly perform a good sampling from this recording at this Caltech show. Don’t miss this chance to hear some great songs\, old and new! Here are a few things being said about Susie Glaze and the Hilonesome Band: \n“The best new band I’ve never heard of!” –  Dan Crary\n“…does something with a song that only great singers can do…”  KCSN\, Northridge\, CA\,\n“One of the most beautiful voices in bluegrass and folk music today.”  KPFK’s FolkScene\n“Her singing is impressive at all ranges…”  Bluegrass Unlimited\n“The band is tight\, great picking\, and beautiful vocals and harmony.”  Che Greenwood\, KVMR\, Nevada City\, CA\n“She held the audience in the palm of her hand….”  Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival \nMore Info: www.susieglaze.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Bryan Bowers
DESCRIPTION:Though other talented folks have followed in his footsteps\, Bryan Bowers continues to be the pinnacle of autoharp playing in the folk music world\, and he delivers a fine mix of songs\, instrumentals\, and stories. Six years have slipped by since his last visit here\, as we could never coordinate a date that fit with his annual visit to California for the California Autoharp Gathering in the Fresno area in May. We found a way this year and we’re proud to welcome Bryan back. \nBorn in Yorktown\, Virginia\, Bryan was profoundly affected by the singing of field and railroad workers\, and this style of singing is an important part of his sound. It wasn’t until college that he took up playing the autoharp\, but he quickly became a master of the instrument that he has redefined over the years. He is as important to modern autoharp playing as Earl Scruggs has been to the banjo. In his hands\, the autoharp has amazing capabilities of notes and chords\, and his playing brings to mind a full orchestra\, with its full-bodied and varied sound. \nHe mixes a few original songs with some gospel\, traditional\, and songs of current songwriters\, many of them very funny\, such as “Zen Gospel Singing.” Bryan’s humor\, easy manner\, and natural storytelling abilities make his performances a pure delight. \nMore Info: www.bryanbowers.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:RUNA
DESCRIPTION:We welcome the return of the fine young band\, RUNA for their second appearance at Caltech. Led by step-dancer\, Shannon Lambert-Ryan\, who was nominated for Best Female Vocalist (individual/traditional) in the 2012 and 2013 Irish Music Awards\, RUNA was nominated for Best Song in the world/traditional category\, for Amhran Mhuighinse (Somewhere Along the Road)\, at the 12th Annual Independent Music Awards. These excellent musicians hail from Ireland\, Canada\, and the United States. \n“There is truly a mystical quality to their playing. They create a lyrical sound that is at once unique as well as seamless\,” writes Lori Lander Murphy of Irish Philadelphia. RUNA draws on the diverse musical backgrounds of its band members and offers a contemporary and refreshing approach to traditional and more recently composed Celtic material. Through their repertoire of both highly energetic and graceful\, acoustic melodies\, along with their fusion of music from Ireland\, Scotland\, Canada\, and the United States\, this vocal and instrumental ensemble gives its arrangements of traditional songs and tunes a fresh sound. \n“Best of all\, RUNA sounds like no one else\,” writes Travis Rogers\, Jr. of Music Life and Times. Members of RUNA have played with Solas\, Riverdance\, Slide\, Clannad\, Fiddlers’ Bid\, Moya Brennan\, Eileen Ivers\, Hazel O’Conner\, Full Frontal Folk\, Keith & Kristyn Getty\, Barco Teada\, and the Guy Mendilow Band. RUNA consists of vocalist and step-dancer\, Shannon Lambert-Ryan of Philadelphia\, Dublin-born guitarist\, Fionan de Barra\, Cheryl Prashker of Canada on percussion\, Dave Curley on mandolin\, vocals\, bodhran and step-dancing\, and Maggie Estes on the fiddle. The band won several awards at the 2010 Montgomery Buck Music Awards\, including Best Entertaining Band\, Best Folk Artist\, Best Female Vocalist\, and Best Album for Jealousy. Jim Allford of PA Music Scene writes\, “The band is going to be reckoned with and I really feel they are Grammy bound within time.” \nBill Margeson\, of Irish American News wrote about their newest CD\, Current Affairs\, “…it shows the band at its current best. And\, that best is mighty good. The band’s personnel is an international gumbo of an Irish group. It’s a quintet\, and it’s terrific\, blending wonderful vocals with really exciting instrumentals. This is their fourth album\, and it includes a full variety of tempos\, timings and fresh approaches to the auld’ music. Runa is young\, fresh and exciting. Extremely high level of creativity meets a really high level of musicianship and understanding of the tradition. We love RUNA. Get this CD!!” \nWe say\, don’t miss them! \nMore Info: www.runamusic.com \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Katy Moffatt
DESCRIPTION:Katy Moffatt is a fine Texas-born singer who has written a most impressive body of songs over the years. Her signature sound is her heart-melting voice\, which she uses to great effect on songs that range from country-tinged story ballads to Hank Williams honky-tonk country numbers\, and more. She also has a knack for finding great songs by others. \nAccompanying herself on guitar\, she is at home with many styles of music. This performance will feature a special program\, Midnight Radio: A One-Woman Show\, in which she highlighted the role of women and the power of radio through songs of personal history and the telling of history through song. \nYou will hear songs from the point of view of Sojourner Truth\, Audrey Williams (wife of Hank Williams)\, and Marina Oswald (widow of Lee Harvey Oswald). Katy weaves these perspectives together into a story that is at once singular and universal. \nMore Info: www.katymoffatt.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Paddy Keenan
DESCRIPTION:Paddy Kennan was a founding member of the almost legendary Bothy Band\, the Irish group that did so much to bring about a resurgence in traditional Irish and other Celtic music. The Bothy Band forever changed the face of Irish traditional music\, merging a driving rhythm section with traditional Irish tunes in ways that had never been heard before. Each of the members of that group went on to make huge contributions to live and recorded Celtic music\, and Paddy is no exception. Over the years\, he has combined with an all-star list of musicians\, touring the world and continuing to forge new alliances with other styles\, yet remaining in touch with Irish traditional roots. \nPaddy’s instrument is the uilleann pipes\, the national bagpipe of Ireland\, in which the air supplied to the instrument comes solely from bellows worked by the arm\, not from blowing through a mouthpiece. He was twice voted top uilleann piper by the Irish Music Association\, and is a nominee for a 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award\, with the winner to be announced in January. The Daily Cavalier\, of Charlottesville\, Virginia\, wrote\, “The sheer amount of sound culled from the pipes is breathtaking\, as Keenan expertly weaves intricate layers of resonant tones and wildly quick and expressive notes… In physical appearance and style Keenan is like the Irish Dickie Betts\, fingering intricate lines of notes without disregarding the passion and sentiment of the song…Perhaps most important is the honesty in the music\, and Keenan rocked the house with unique Irish flair.” Paddy will be accompanied by Padraic Conroy\, who will play guitar and do some singing. \nDon’t miss this chance to hear Paddy up close in Caltech’s intimate Beckman Institute Auditorium! \nMore Info: www.paddykeenan.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Socks in the Frying Pan
DESCRIPTION:Socks in the Frying Pan is young band just now making a name for themselves on the international scene. We are only too happy to help introduce them to the US audience and vice versa. \nHaving gained a fan-base from four years of gigging around the west of Ireland\, this exciting group has recently started branching out and has been well received for its modern traditional style and energetic approach to music. This\, combined with an acoustic musical interplay\, three-part harmony and an obvious love for live performance\, compliments the traditional essence of both tune and songs in a fresh and entertaining way. \nhttps://youtube.com/watch?v=uBuLckoRfVY \nThe band consists of two brothers\, Shane and Fiachra Hayes on accordion and fiddle/banjo\, accompanied by Aodán Coyne on guitar and vocals. Their first CD\, Socks in the Frying Pan\, consists of songs\, reels\, jigs\, a waltz and a polka. \nCome and enjoy this up and coming band! \nMore Info: www.socksinthefryingpan.com \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Celtic Fiddle Festival
DESCRIPTION:Many have asked when the Folk Music Society will be bringing Irish fiddler\, Kevin Burke back\, and we’ve been working on that for awhile. Sometimes things just fall into place\, and we are not only getting Kevin\, but we have the entire Celtic Fiddle Festival\, featuring Christian Lemaître (Brittany)\, André Brunet (Québec)\, and Nicholas Quemener (Brittany). \nThe group was founded by Kevin and the late Johnny Cunningham\, formerly of Silly Wizard\, 20 years ago. The band is 3 fiddlers\, along with Nicholas on guitar. The Philadelphia Weekly described them as “among the world’s greatest Celtic fiddlers…breathtaking virtuosity.” The Washington Post wrote\, “Three of the finest folk violinists anywhere. A mastery of regional fiddle styles with alternately soulful\, dazzling and nuanced performances.” \nWe’re very proud to have this ensemble in our series and we hope you will join us! \nMore Info: www.celticfiddlefestival.com \nTickets: $20 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Jim Malcolm
DESCRIPTION:Jim Malcolm has performed in our series four times and also once or twice when he was a member of Old Blind Dogs. The pattern has been to have him every other year\, but because of a scheduling conflict in 2014\, we’re making up for missing him last January. \nJim continues to be one of Scotland’s finest singers\, accompanying himself on 6- and 12-string guitar\, as well as on harmonica. Living Tradition called him “one of the finest singing voices in Scotland in any style\,” and The Scotsman wrote “Jim Malcolm will just melt you in your seat.” \nIn performance\, he splits his time between singing original songs\, many of which end up getting recorded by others\, and he sings songs written or passed down by some of Scotland’s fine writers\, including early ballads from Robert Burns\, Robert Tannahill\, William Soutar\, and his great hero Jim Reid. \nMore Info: www.jimmalcolm.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children

SUMMARY:Danú - A Christmas Gathering: Féile na Nollag
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Caltech Public Events\, with the Folk Music Society as marketing partner \nDanú performed in our own series twice\, back in 1997 and then again in 2001. They were a young\, newly formed Irish band\, based in Waterford\, just starting to make a name for themselves. Now\, they are better known and command a larger audience than we can handle\, so Caltech Public Events has booked them for a special Christmas show and they will extend a $5 discount to anyone who mentions the Pasadena Folk Music Society when buying tickets in advance or at the door. \nKnown for their assortment of jigs\, polkas\, reels and songs\, back in 2001 they featured the fine singing of Clarán Ó Gealbháin. They have had a few personnel changes in the intervening years\, including the addition of a new lead singer\, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh from Dunquin in County Kerry\, their first female member. Clarán has left the band\, but founding member\, Dónal Clancy (son of Liam Clancy of the Clancy Brothers) has returned. \nThis show at Caltech will be a homecoming\, as they get ready to celebrate their 20th year anniversary in 2015. Featuring flute\, tin whistle\, fiddle\, button accordion\, bouzouki\, and vocals (Irish and English)\, they have performed around the globe and recorded seven critically acclaimed albums. \nDanú’s agent describes this special holiday show\, Féile na Nollag’ (A Christmas Gathering)\, as follows: \nChristmas in Ireland is one of the most important holidays for families and friends\, as many Irish people living abroad come home to gather in celebration. Local community choirs singing traditional songs for Christmas and Wrens Day (Dec. 26) are a common site throughout Ireland each December. Music and dance gatherings\, in communities both urban and rural\, have often combined for generations to offer a great variety of songs\, music\, and stories for the holidays. \nJoin us in the fun! \nMore Info: www.danumusic.com \nTickets: All seats are reserved. Regular prices are: $32\, $27\, $22 / $10 Youth\, but there is a $5 discount if you mention the Pasadena Folk Music Society when ordering or buying tickets at the door!

SUMMARY:T Sisters
DESCRIPTION:We were planning to take December off\, and just kick back and enjoy the return of Danú to the larger stage of Beckman Auditorim (Big Beckman) in Caltech’s Public Events series the next week. But late in September\, we were contacted by the agent for T Sisters\, an Oakland trio who would be down this way in early December. We did a little checking (see this YouTube video of them doing their song “Molasses”)\, and then we found that they performed at the Kate Wolf Festival and at the Strawberry Music Festival in Yosemite\, two major summer festivals in California. Our former sound man\, Roger Sherman\, heard them at Strawberry\, liked them\, and said they got a great response. \nTheir first recording was produced by Laurie Lewis and the second one was co-produced by famed mandolinist\, Mike Marshall. They are clearly an act on the rise\, and we decided to get them in our series before they get too big to afford. They are just too good to miss. \nThe T Sisters are siblings Erika\, Rachel\, and Chloe Tietjen\, and they’ve been singing together all their lives. Their voices and their harmonies are outstanding\, and they write most of their own songs\, as well as including some covers\, such as their stunning version of Paul Simon’s “American Tune” and the traditional “Wind and Rain.” \nThey sing mostly with guitar accompaniment\, and they may be joined by a bassist and/or manolinist\, and their a cappella songs are not to be missed. One might think of the Andrews Sisters\, from past\, or more recently\, the Roches. Maybe a closer comparison would be the rootsy sirens from the film\, O Brother\, Where Art Thou? Expect some brazenly sassy fun and playful theatricality from these three women\, each of them with a distinct personality. \nMore Info: www.tsisters.com \nTickets: $15 / $5 for Caltech students and children
