While we are sorry to have to cancel our concert, we would like to point our patrons to some other concerts and listening opportunities.
Free summer concerts
Free concerts continue for several more weeks in some summer series in Los Angeles, Altadena, Culver City and Marina del Rey. Check out the listings for MacArthur Park, California Plaza (350 S. Grand Ave., L.A.), L.A. County’s Farnsworth Park in Altadena, the Getty Museum, the Skirball Cultural Center, and Culver City Town Plaza. Lila Downs, a passionate singer-songwriter who blends the folk traditions of Oaxaca and the southern United States, will perform in a free concert on Saturday, Aug. 17, as part of the summer series at L.A. County’s Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey.
More music
The Imaginaries, an Americana duo from Oklahoma, will be performing at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Abby Posner, winner of the 28th annual USA Songwriting competition, will bring her “genre-fluid” music to McCabe’s in Santa Monica on Saturday, Aug. 24.
The following night, McCabe’s will host an “Ash Grove Alumni” event to celebrate the spirit and fervor of that late, lamented folk-music venue. Featured performers will include singer-songwriter Wendy Waldman and Joe Chambers (of the Chambers Brothers).
Living legend Emmylou Harris, Americana music’s founding queen, will headline the Los Angeles Folk Festival, Sept. 7 and 8 at The Bellwether on Boylston Street in Los Angeles.
Save the date: Saturday, Oct. 5, for the Santa Barbara Old Time Fiddler’s Fest. This annual fest will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day in a delightful Goleta setting, with concerts, workshops, contests, food, a lake, trails, and an instrument “petting zoo.” If you are a musician, consider competing. It is important to understand their contest guidelines, as they stick to their “old time” label, so check them out and start honing your song or tune. They will have a lineup of fine traditional musicians in concert, interspersed with the contests.
Listen when you want
We always like to bring your attention to our friends at Roots Music and Beyond (KPFK, 90.7 FM, 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. every Saturday) and at FolkScene (KPFK, 90.7 FM, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Sunday). Both shows can be heard for two weeks after their airing at KPFK Audio Archives. These shows and their hosts have inspired us over the years, and they continue to present a wide, wonderful range of great acoustic music. Give them a listen. Check out the very thorough Roots Music and Beyond Calendar of Live Events at https://www.facebook.com/
Also, check out FolkWorks, a great website that will inform you about folk music, performers and concerts.
In case you missed the maiden voyage of the Long Beach Bluegrass Festival back in May (or want to recall good memories of it), you can hear clear recordings of many performances from that day at this link. The video starts with separate songs by Honey Buckets, Honey Whiskey Trio, Lucky Punch, Whole Hog, Matt Michienzie Band, Whole Hog (again), Matt Michienzie Band (again), Whole Hog and Salty Suites (in that order, if we have this right). After that, a set by each group is recorded. Here’s the schedule, since the bands aren’t clearly identified and it might be hard to tell who’s who unless you’ve been lucky enough to hear them live:
- Honey Whiskey Trio 22:16 – 36:40
- Lucky Punch 36:40 – 43:35
- Whole Hog 43:35 – 53:30
- Matt Michienzie Band 53:30 – 1:29:35
- Salty Suites 1:29:40 – 2:00:18
- Honey Buckets 2:00:20 – 2:28:45
Photos and video clips from the event are at this link. We intend to keep you posted when a date is set for the second annual edition of the Long Beach Bluegrass Festival, next spring.
