The Japan Foundation, Los Angles will present a Kabuki screening, preceded by a live performance by TAIKOPROJECTon Saturday Jan 13 at the Aratani Theatre. TAIKOPROJECT have been called “One of “America’s Cultural Treasures”” by the Ford Foundation. If you’re not familiar with Taiko, they are used in Japanese folk and classical music traditions.  Admission is free, but pre-registration is preferred.

The Southern California Slack Key Festival will feature Hi’ikua and several other players of this type of traditional Hawaiian guitar style. It will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.

On Tuesday evening, Jan. 16, Dar Williams and the Amy Ray Band will perform at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, one of the earliest venues for folk music in Southern California.

From Jan 18 – Feb 4, the world-renowned Glasgow festival, Celtic Connections, will take place in Scotland.  There is an extensive list of concerts planned, with the potential for some live streaming. Low Lily, who will grace the PFMS stage on Sat, Mar 2, is performing with Alison Brown on Jan 26.

The duo of Senagalese kora player Ablaye Cissoko and French accordionist Cyrille Brotto will meld their traditions at UCLA’s Nimoy Theater on Saturday evening, Jan. 20.  The Nimoy, just a few months old as a venue for concerts that include folk music, is in the art-deco building, formerly the Crest Theatre, on Westwood Boulevard.
