Just a quick reminder before we all get carried away with family get-togethers and feasts, about a great show coming up one week after Thanksgiving. The Pasadena Folk Music Society will present the T Sisters on Saturday, December in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) on the Caltech campus.
This trio has been likened to the sirens in a famous scene from the movie O Brother Where Art Thou, where we hear the voices of Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss sing “Go to Sleep You Little Baby.” The T Sisters also have that ability to blend their heavenly voices in wondrous ways. Hear their original song, “Train Wreck,” from their new CD which sounds like a modern day “classic,” and see the fun they have doing the same song live (with Laurie Lewis on fiddle) at Bay-area music store Downhome Music. Chloe, Rachel, and Erika Tietjen are also involved in a musical performance theater in Oakland, Chthonic Theater (pronounced thon-ik), so you can count on them being quite entertaining.
If you aren’t convinced yet, listen them do their song “Woo Woo,” and be sure to listen to another original, “Molasses,” which is not to be missed. Their web site is http://tsisters.com. Don’t miss this show. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Call (626) 395-4652 for information and tickets (after 9:00 a.m. on Monday). You can also buy tickets online or at the door. And don’t forget we have exciting things coming up in 2015, starting out with Scotland’s Jim Malcolm on Saturday, January 24!
Just one week later, on Saturday, December 13, Caltech Public Events will present Irish group, Danú doing a special show, A Christmas Gathering: Féile na Nollag in Beckman Auditorium (Big Beckman) on Saturday, December 13. Regular prices are $32, $27, $22; $10 for children, but you can get a $5 discount by mentioning the Folk Music Society when you order tickets, either in advance or at the door. Danú played our series back in 2001 and now that they are well established, they’ve moved up to bigger venues. They’ve added new lead singer, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh from Dunquin in County Kerry, and they also feature founding member, Dónal Clancy, son of Liam Clancy of the Clancy Brothers. Hear Danú in a series of lively clips, and hear Muireann’s beautiful vocal on “Molly Na GCuach Ni Chuilleanain.” Learn more about them at the band’s web site, http://danumusic.com. Call the Ticket Office to receive the discount at (626) 395-4652 or visit them in person. You can get tickets to both shows at the same time and pay the service charge just once. Have a happy Thanksgiving!
