Jim and Susie Malcolm will perform in Beckman Institute Auditorium on FRIDAY, January 24 at 8:00 PM. Jim and his wife, Susie, live in Perthshire, Scotland, and Jim has performed solo in our series 6 times, and once when he was lead singer and guitarist with Old Blind Dogs. Many of you are familiar with him and will be eager for another thoroughly enjoyable evening with him. We have been lucky to have him on a somewhat regular schedule, every 2 or 3 years. He is known for his fine voice, excellent guitar & harmonica skills, a large dose of humor, well-told stories, and, not least of all, his great adaptations of traditional songs, as well excellent original songs. Yes, he excels at all of these things. He often brings us a surprise or two, which we can’t know about ahead of time, but we do know that for the first time, he is bringing his wife, Susie, along to accompany him on vocals! We’ve been looking forward to this treat, as they have waited until their kids are old enough to allow Susie to cross the Atlantic with him. Susie was brought up in the farming community of the North East of Scotland, home of the Bothy Ballad (working songs from farm labourers) and notably was apparently the first woman to win the bothy ballad contest (songs sung by farm labourers in the northeast region of Scotland) at the Auchtermuchty Folk Festival, north of Edinburgh. Jim and Susie have a brand new recording out, The Berries, so they have plenty of new material for us. Another special feature of this show will be that the show is the day before the 261st birthday of Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns, and you can bet that this fact will not be ignored. The new album features mostly traditional and older songs written or passed down by some of Scotland’s fine writers, including early ballads from Robert Burns, Robert Tannahill, Ewan MacColl, and others With the addition of Susie on vocals, this will be a wonderful show, so please join us!

A bit more about parking if you haven’t been to one of our shows for awhile: There will be the usual limited parking right behind the large Beckman Auditorium- It is OK to park in slots with names on weekends and evenings, but the lot may fill up, depending on what other events may be taking place on the Caltech campus. This is the best place to park for the handicapped (try to come a little early- email us at [email protected] if you need help planning your visit). The parking lots between Michigan and Wilson have been closed- a new building is rapidly rising at the southeast corner of Wilson and Del Mar. The most reliable parking will be on Wilson Avenue, either on the street or in the two parking structures just south of Del Mar Avenue, across the street from Beckman Institute. One structure is just north of the Institute at 341 S. Wilson Avenue, and the other, 405 S. Wilson, is just a bit south of the Institute. Rest assured that after 5PM on weekdays, and all day on weekends, you can park for free in these structures, despite signs that allude to the more restricted parking rules during the day on weekdays. You are permitted to park in slots that have names on them here as well. From the structures, walk around the big lawn (much of which is currently fenced in for the building projet to the north) in front of Beckman Institute and you will recognize where to go. On this map, we are suggesting that you park in structures #123 and #124 in the upper left. Beckman Institute is building #74, just to the east (right).
