Irish Group Socks in the Frying Pan in 3 days on Saturday, Feb. 28; Art Night and Pasadena Pow Wow Coming Up

This is a last reminder about Socks in the Frying Pan, the young trio from Ennis County Clare, Ireland performing at Caltech this Saturday, February 28 at 8:00 p.m.  in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman). Featuring Shane Hayes on accordion and vocals, his brother, Fiachra Hayes, on fiddle, banjo, and vocals, and Aodán Coyne on guitar and lead vocals, the Socks sing, play dance tunes, and are sure to delight their audience. Sample their vocals on Foreign Lander and hear the beautiful Last Waltz.  We haven’t had a lot of accordion music over the years, but when we hear them do Last Waltz, we think back to the fiddle/accordion interplay on the occasional slow tunes that John and Phil Cunningham did with the great Scottish group Silly Wizard, who played our series a couple of times back in the 1980s. The tune Aoife Johnston’s Freakout (obviously NOT an old traditional tune) features Fiachra Hayes switching from fiddle to banjo in delightful fashion, with great help from Shane’s accordion and Aodán’s great rhythm guitar.  You can hear this cut from their CD by going to their web page at http://www.socksinthefryingpan.com and clicking on “Aoife Johns..”

Aodán Coyne comes from a traditional music family, being the son of Mick Coyne and grandson of Eamon Coyne, and he has a new solo CD. The Hayes brothers have been playing music since they were very wee, and we look forward to getting to know them all at this show! Tickets for the show are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Order them at the Caltech Ticket Office from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday at (626) 395-4652 or in person (no service charge) at Winnett Student Center on campus. You can also buy them online on Wednesday and Thursday. Tickets are selling well, but the Socks are not as well known as Celtic Fiddle Festival, and we don’t expect this show to sell out, so you can likely buy tickets at the door before the show.

Browse the site to find out more about upcoming shows, including the great uilleann piper, Paddy Keenan in two weeks on March 14, followed by the return of golden-tongued singer and songwriter Katy Moffatt, originally from Texas, just two weeks after that on March 28.  And remember that if you order tickets to multiple shows at the same time on the phone, you pay only one service charge!

ArtNight_PasadenaComing up in two weeks is Art Night Pasadena and you can find out more at http://artnightpasadena.org.
